I just hope we can keep Harris here. Electrifying when He gets to touch the ball! Wondering about how he catches the ball with his hands up high, though, instead of his body. Hopefully we will see, though. ;D
PS, we will surely miss JD!
I dont know how many Jack fans knew that UNC's No 15 was a former Husker who left when there was a coaching change. Thanks Hank Mc Call for keeping Andy Birkel from having a big game. Thanks Hank for all your great play at SDSU.

Is being a nice guy really enough? At what price, who pays for being nice?

      jharrisfan,

I resent the fact that you took quotes that were posted during the '03 season and tried to pass them off as even remotely current in an attempt to make it seem that I support your position. >

If I recall correctly they were made in frustration after a heart breaking loss to UND in 2003. I know for sure they were made while we were still D-II.

Let me state for the record that I support Head Coach John Stiegelmeier and his whole staff 100%. The work they have done with our program since the move to D-I is astounding and I am very impressed. Will there come a time in my mind when 6-5 on a regular basis is not good enough? I would say the answer is yes. Once the program is fully funded and has established itself in the I-AA ranks I would hope for more, but that does not reflect the realities of our Program’s current situation.

jharrisfan, just so you know, some of my proudest moments as a Jackrabbit fan came last season. When the Jackrabbits came from behind and beat Southern University in Baton Rouge, and when the Jacks defeted NDSU to win the inaugural Dakota Marker game I was thrilled. The only other times I had been that excited was in 1979 watching our Jackrabbits have a heck of a season and in 1985 when the Jacks knocked off a #1 rated USD team on the best Hobo Day ever.

Was I a little disappointed that today's game wasn't for a share of the Great West crown? Sure, but that is no reason to call into question our Coaches' abilities in my mind.

Bottom line, I believe this program has made tremendous strides since the ’03 season and is heading in the right direction. I am very optimistic about our future and an excited already to see the improvements that Coach Stig and his staff will have for us next season.

      Go State! ;D

        Re: Coaching

I started going to SDSU football games in the 1970's. I can't recall a stretch of football that has been as exciting as the last couple of years have been . . . and we are only just now starting to build. Let's stick with the program we are on and see where it takes us. I think it will only get better.

          Re: Coaching

Record wise, I'm with jharris fan in thinking that Stig is just doing enough to get by. I believe Stig's first year was my first year of school so I've about had it with .500 seasons. But, success is not purely measured in wins and losses. The character of our team is second to none and I believe Stig is a big reason for that. As others have said, right now may not be the time for a coaching change. We're in a transition period and upping schollies big time; I don't know what we'd gain by going in a different direction.

            Re: Coaching

I'm proud to say that i've been to every game but, Texas St. and Montana. Is Coach Stigelmeier the right coach for this team, I have no idea. What i do know is that, from what I've seen, is that while Harris is really fast and he as made some really sweet plays, He does seem to run the majority of his kick returns like a little girl. I'm only comparing this to what I've seen on TV. The good return guys I see are guys who hit it hard. I've seen Harris turn his back and be hesitant. The ndsu game is a prime example in my opinion. I don't think we got past the 30 on a kick return. The punt returner, on the other hand is fearless, borderline reckless. While 6-5 is another winning season, I've looked through the media guide and I see that 6-5 is the norm for SDSU football teams since who knows when. I side on the consensus of patience with the coaching staff. Lets give them an honest chance of winning with a comparable amount of scholarships. We beat UNC and UC Davis with that, but have lost to some great teams in the top ten with the full allotment.

              Re: Coaching

Jharris Fan makes a few points that I respectfully disagree with. First, NONE of our head coaches or assistant coaches on staff have more than "Division III" resumes. Coach Liles (wrestling) and Coach MeGee (equestrian) I believe are the only coaches to have head coaching experience before coming to SDSU. It seems to me that Dr. Oien has made it a point to hire up and coming coaches over going with someone that has all of the big names on paper. Second thing is I know for a fact that Stig does not make the schedule. Much like other Division I, this is done by a member of the administration.

                Re: Coaching

I have grown so tired of foulweather/jharrisfan's posts. We have a solid coaching staff and a great group of young players. You want to make a difference? Put your money where your mouth is. Go to Oien again, instead of mindlessly bitching about coaching ask him how much you can give and where it will do the best. Right now, what the athletic department needs is 10000 people donating good money yearly. That will get us where we need to be.

                  Re: Coaching

[glb]Trick plays instead of FG at Montana? [/glb]

Amazingly enough if the players execute the play we tie the game and win in overtime. A field goal does nothing that late in the game but make us lose by 4 instead of 7.

[glb]Cal Poly on the ropes, but we wouldn't play anybody but a severly ONE-DIMENSIONAL QB, run only, that is.[/glb]

ON THE ROPES? In the first 12 plays of the game we were down 14-0. Our offense brought us back into the game after the defense woke up.

[glb]What kind of a dumb*%@ calls three consecutive pass plays that are not completed with about 1 minute left in the half and then gives the ball back to the other team (blocked punt to add insult to injury) while LEADING the game.[/glb]

I believe that was our O-Corrdinator with DI playing experience. AND I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE NO COACH CALLED THE PASSES TO BE INCOMPLETIONS. AND I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE NO COACH CALLED FOR THE PUNT TO BE BLOCKED. Fact of the matter execution didn't happen (And it happened to be your boy Berry in at QB not the severely one dimensional running qb) (P.S. to all, I love Berry I can't stand JHarris fan)

[glb]Can we even imagine being able to stretch the field with a speedster like Harris,[/glb]

I can't wait for JaRon to DEVELOP into the great receiver we all expect him to be. But right now your comment would insist that maybe JaRon is a little too one-dimensional. Maybe that's why he's not on the field, rather than the coaches not wanting to win as you have suggested so stupidly in the past.

I'm with the patience side...and I disagree with most of what JHarrisfan posts--and I totally disagree with jharrisfan's attitude.  But, I'm really high on Jaron Harris...as noted before, he needs to time to develop.  (Have any of you considered how many seasons of high school football he played ... do your research.  He's still learning and he'll be great.)

Here is something I found interesting from the school website. Somebody here said they felt like with Daly we were going somewhere. Here are the records under Daly:

                        1991 7-3-0
                        1992 7-3-0
                        1993 7-4-0
                        1994 7-4-0
                        1995 6-5-0
                        1996 7-4-0

More 6-5 and 7-4. The difference between Daly and Stig is that Daly was a better salesman.

Absolutely right. He only played one year in high school. And don't forget that JaRon Harris had Josh Davis, among many others, ahead of him. He'll get some snaps next year and I'm sure he's going to develop into a special player.

                            Re: Coaching

OK Jackrabbit had it right as did some of the others. Josh Davis is an outstanding receiver and Chris Molitor, another senior has made his mark as well. Both earned and deserved the downs they played. I'm a big believer in what JaRon Harris is going to do before his career is over. But I overheard some questions about him earlier this year with the coaching staff, and the comment was "he's a fantastic athlete, but he's got a lot to learn about football yet. But he will be great."
Anyway, if he's go the hands (I would suspect so knowing he's quite an athlete) and gets the techniques down, I suspect he will become our featured receiver next year. Go JaRon! Thanks JD and Chris and all of the other seniors. and thanks to Coach Stig and the rest of the coaches. I think we've made great strides and done far better than I thought we would in the transition. And just a little P.S. Mike Daly was a good coach, and a good guy and he did a good job. But please remember, he was playing against teams that all had the same scholarship level as they competed against each other. That's not the case right now -- cut the coaches some slack!

This is an extremely valid point and could not agree more. Those of us who spend time being a very loyal fan of SDSU will cut the coaches some slack. Its so easy to be a flamethrower and that is how this thread got started.

WOW ..... nothing like stirring the pot....... well here goes some more .Wether we like it or not we need to face the facts. SDSU is not a powerhouse when it comes to football. Records and results do not lie. SDSU and the fans have to decide where they want the football program to head. How we become in div 1-AA will most likely mirror our div2 days. I dont claim to have all the answers but something has to change, and if all we are doing is saying .. just wait until we are fully funded ... we are going to be in a world of hurt. I for one favor a coaching change. I realize this is going against what majority feel but i would like to discuss this in a dignified manner or would you just rather drop it .
