"UCA will begin contesting an SLC schedule in 2007." So you're kinda-sorta a member
Well, not exactly. There is a difference between "contesting a (full) SLC schedule" and being a full member of the conference. Or at least that is what the Southland Conference thinks.

    http://southland.cstv.com/genrel/070106aaa.html

"The Southland Conference reaches it largest configuration Saturday (July 1, 2006) as the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi officially join the league as full members."

But hey, if it will make you guys feel better to say you got your ears pinned back by a "future" Southland Conference member so be it [/quote]

You ain't arguing with me, you're arguing with the Southland Conference's weekly release, which is what I linked above (and which incidentally doesn't include the SDSU-UCA game in their game preview section). I'd take it up with your new conference if you think that's an issue.

      BEARS PREPARE FOR JACKRABBITS

      FOOTBALL • Oct 3, 2006

CONWAY, Ark- Just three days removed from disposing of one South Dakota team, the University of Central Arkansas Bears spent Tuesday afternoon installing the game plan for another.

Saturday the Bears defeated Division II South Dakota 24-0 in Estes Stadium, and will play their second of three games this season against teams from the Mount Rushmore State this weekend when they travel to Brookings, SD to square off against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

"They've got our respect," UCA head coach Clint Conque said. "Going to Montana and Northern Iowa and competing as hard as they did, a lot of football teams come out of those two environments a little short. But you go down to Thibodaux and Lake Charles, Louisiana after those two games and win in those two environments, that gets my attention."

The Jackrabbits started the season off with three losses, but have rebounded with back-to-back victories over Southland Conference foes Nicholls State and McNeese State, both in hostile territory.

"Having coached down there, playing down there and being from down there, I know what type of athletes and coaches are at those schools," Conque said. "It says a lot about their staff and their players."

The Bears find themselves somewhat banged up following a hard-fought battle with Stephen F. Austin and a physical encounter with the Coyotes last weekend, but that didn't keep them from turning in a solid day of work.

"It was a pretty good day," Conque said. "We had some guys miss today that we're trying to keep protected, but they should be back tomorrow. I thought the offensive line responded well to Coach (Brooks) Hollingsworth today, and we got the majority of our game plan in place. We added a few new wrinkles, and our execution, attitude and hustle were good for the most part."

Despite some shakiness in some facets of the kicking game, placekicker James Paul turned in a good practice.

"Because we held a few guys, some of our kicking was a little disjointed," Conque said. "But James Paul had an excellent day. We put the ball at the same spot he missed the field goal Saturday, and he drilled six straight. He’s playing with an awful lot of confidence."

Conque also praised the efforts of wide receivers Aaron Fairooz and David Robinson, running back Brent Grimes, much of the offensive line and the cornerbacks, while noting some key returns.

"Gerald Norman, Dathan Johnson and Tristan Jackson had a good day," Conque said. "It was also good to have Jacob Ford, Jeremy Pittman and Lawrence Atkinson dressed out and on the field today. They’re a big part of our defensive makeup, but the experience Taylor Scott and Josh Fay are getting is only going to help us the rest of this year and in the future."

There was, however, one drawback on the defensive side of the ball.

"I thought we could’ve ran to the ball harder," Conque said. "We've got to come back tomorrow and have another good work day."

OK, here are two important questions:

          (1) Where should we stay up there (hotel/motel)?

          (2) Who is hosting me at their tailgate?

            1. From what I have heard, feel free to correct me if I am wrong anybody, but there is a slim chance of finding a hotel room in Brookings. Most of the rooms in Brookings are booked for this weekend.

            2. As for tailgating. Walk around the area, avoid the student part, and show your Bear pride. In the Northwest, or North Part of the tailgate area there are a lot of football parents that have spots. So if you want a little bit of a scouting report head there. Tailgating here is catching on fast. Maybe we'll see you around.

Good luck finding a hotel room this weekend....there's a big soccer tournament in town as well.

                UCA,

Are you flying in or driving in? Either way your probably best off staying in Sioux Falls which is only a 50 minute drive south of Brookings and also, more than likely, where your team is staying. Also, a little more in the way of activities if Mrs. UCA or the little UCA's are coming along with.

If you don't mind the half-hour drive and you like a little gambling, how about staying at the Royal River Casino and Hotel in Flandreau?

Re: Central Arkansas - Beef Bowl

I am driving in. To add to the equation, Mrs. UCA and I will be driving over to Northfield, MN on Sunday to visit our daughter who attends Carleton College.

What is the best route over there? Is US Highway 14 OK or should I go back down to I 90.

Map quest can not seem to make much difference in the two routes.

The casino deal sounds fine depending on our route. Is there any town over in MN that we could make within an hour or so after the game (I don't want to drive too far that late at night)?

Thanks so much for all the help. Any additional info would be appreciated.

UCABEARS75, if you end up staying in Sioux Falls, it's just I-90 to I-35 and north to Northfield. There are quite a few more rooms in Brookings than there used to be, so you might snake one. If you go from Brookings to Northfield, taking the interstates will be a tremendous waste of time. Just pick up a MN map and cut across country, starting on 14.

That's what I thought from looking at the map.

We have been to Northfield several times over the past 3 years but always up the interstate from Des Moinses.

I was not familiar with US14 and just wanted to hear from ya'll that it would be OK.

                        Thank you so much.

Marshall is just an hour from Brookings, heading in the direction of Northfield. Also from there you can just take MN HWY 19 from Marshall all the way to Northfield.

                          According to Google
141 mi from Marshall to Northfield on MN 19
60 mi from Brookings to Marshall on I-29 to SD 30 which becomes MN 19
201 mi from Brookings to Northfeild through Marshall
210 mi on US 14 from Brookings to Northfield on US 14 to MN 60 and I-35

It's going to be the same both ways but there are nicer hotels in Marshall then say Tracy on US 14. Plus I grew up in Marshall. The Best Western, Comfort Inn, and Travelers Lodge are all on 19 in Marshall.

I'll add from personal experience, Hwy 19 is a pretty good road to take from Brookings to Northfield. If you don't mind a little extra drive for a hotel, the casino at Morton (just outside outside of Redwood Falls) would give you some entertainment for Saturday night. Adds about 30-45 minutes past Marshall. All depends on your route home as to where you'll want to stay Saturday night.

UCABEARS75, I would recommend taking SD Hwy 30/MN Hwy 19 north of Brookings if you are heading to Northfield on Sunday. From my own experiences, driving on US 14 from Brookings to Mankato is a slower drive because of the railroad towns every five or six miles for much of the trip. I've driven on Hwy 19 from Marhsall to the Twin Cities many times and it's a good road. Marshall has several decent hotels and is about an hour away. If you drive on US 14, your hotel options are limited until you get to New Ulm; you wouldn't get there until well after midnight.....
