I would say the number of students from other schools was very small in the actual game. Most of the students from other schools stayed in the tailgate area.
That would explain a lot of why the student attendance number for Hobo Day seemed low. Bluehat was probably just reporting the "official" student number, which is the total number of card swipes. It's probably safe to assume that several hundred students entered without having their card swiped.

I am a student at SDSU and I attended the game. I got to the game 30 minutes before kickoff and the line wrapped around behind the locker room. It was a long wait, and that was for the card swiping line, which only had two people working. Then they opened the gates next to the swipe line and everyone rushed to it. They do not swipe your card through the side gate, you only need to show your ID. So when I was in line almost 90% went through the side gate where you do not need to swipe, I believe that is what decreased the numbers in student attendence is that they weren't swiping the cards for most of the students entering. As for at the game, the first half the student section was packed, you couldn't hardly move, way more students than at the Beef Bowl, but like you said at halftime quite a few left, but i would say 88% stayed.
