William Penn Football Game Notes: Week Ten: South Dakota State
    Thursday, November 2, 2006

Oskaloosa--The Statesmen football team will look to pull what would be the biggest upset in school history when it faces nationally-ranked NCAA Division I-AA South Dakota State Saturday. . . .

Saturday’s meeting will be the first between the two programs on the gridiron, but will be the third consecutive year the Statesmen will face a I-AA opponent. South Dakota State (5-3), a member of the Great West Football Conference, is actually only halfway through its transition to become a full-fledged I-AA (D-I for all other sports), moving up from a D-II institution. Upon final approval from the NCAA, the Jackrabbits would be eligible for postseason play in 2008.

Penn has also faced I-AA teams the past two years, playing Southern Illinois in 2004 (L, 59-9) and Maine in 2005 (L, 28-0). . . . (read more)

Actually i think we only play 4 wr.  I don't think Fox and Steffen have seen anytime this year.

Interesting. They won't be strangers to I-AA competition, but at least they are strangers to SDSU.

I have seen Steffen in for a few plays. I think Fox may have been switched back to safety after Campbell got hurt

This is strictly my point of view and really doesn’t account for much. This is the senior’s last home game of their careers. They have earned the right to play this game in full this week. If they are going to sub in any player it should be their under classman. I am betting there is not one under classman who would disagree with that statement after the year they have had. All feelings a side on the quarterback of your choice, Kardoes, has earned the right to finish his last game here. He has gone to the extreme to give you all the game of a life time each and every week. He may not be a pretty quarterback, but he is at least a get-r-done quarterback.

              Re: William Penn

haveaclue, the seniors deserve their glory tomorrow and all of them will be starting. There are, however, two games left in the season after this week and it would not be appropriate to keep your best players on the field in the second half if the game turns into a blowout. I don't think anyone would want to see Kardoes (or another key player) injured before the NDSU game because we decided to keep them on the field in a game that had already been decided.

                Re: William Penn

I am a huge Kardoes fan but I would rather see him rested to face SUU and NDSU. I think each and every one of those seniors would prefer to go down in history as the first team to win a conference title than to know they played every minute in a blowout of their last game at home. I think the biggest thing we can do for them is show up. I also hope that Andy gets replaced after starting a drive so that he can run off the field to a standing O. He does deserve that.

Great to see such support for Andy and the other seniors. It has to be tough to be an athlete on a team in transition and these guys have been phenomenal. I think the best might be a middle of the 3rd quarter sub-in for Kardoes and a walk off the field to a standing ovation. Not typical in FB but it does happen on occasion.

                    Re: William Penn

Some of this talk makes me a little uneasy!

"Pull him out after one series"
"3rd quarter sub-in for Kardoes to get a standing ovation"

We might be putting the cart in front of the horse and not heeding the hard lessons that have been learned! All of the things above would be great but I'm more concerned about getting the job done early against an opponent we should flat-out dominate!

I'll gaurantee you there won't be any let up from the coaching staff and I can't imagine the players will ever look past another team again!

If the opportunity presents itself well after the outcome has been decided, these seniors deserve to be pulled off the field one or two at a time and given a huge ovation for turning the season around after a rough start and putting us in position to contend for a conference title!

Also, let's not forget the coaches and the outstanding job they have done!

Blow 'em out 'Bits and enjoy the moment!

Read my post carefully and you'll see that I said "I think the best might be", that leaves a lot of variables in place. First-things-first take care of William Penn, then take care of formalities.

Beautiful day in Yankton today. If its anything like this tomorrow it will be a fabulous day for Jackrabbit football and the backyard. I'll be looking for the hardcore fans like me.

                        From the Argus:

                        http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs...10/1002/SPORTS

William Penn (4-5) at South Dakota State (5-3)
                        WHEN/WHERE: Today, 1 p.m., Coughlin-Alumni Stadium, Brookings

                        RADIO: WNAX 570-AM, Yankton.

COACHES: William Penn: Todd Hafner (3rd year, 13-8); SDSU: John Stiegelmeier (10th year, 59-46)

                        SERIES: First meeting
LAST WEeK: William Penn defeated Trinity International 19-12. SDSU beat UC Davis 22-21.

                        RANKINGS: SDSU is ranked 24th.

ABOUT SDSU: In its first game as an NCAA Division I-AA top 25 team, No. 24-ranked SDSU faces a roundabout reminder of one of the low points in recent program history.

Winning five consecutive games hasn't entirely erased memories of what happened the last time the Jacks faced an opponent from a different level of college football: a 17-3 home loss against Division III Wisconsin-Lacrosse (6-1).

That defeat was brought up during preparations for today's home finale against William Penn, an NAIA school located in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

"Our program was embarrassed, our team was embarrassed," Stiegelmeier said of the 17-3 season-opening loss. "We're trying to eliminate that embarrassment by playing above what other people thought we might play."

SDSU junior linebacker Justin Kubesh went so far as to say this resurgence might not happen without that devastating setback.

"It was really humbling, so I do think it's helped us put this string together," said Kubesh, who leads the team with 62 tackles. "We've learned it (level) doesn't matter. You have to bring it every day."

The Jacks defense has epitomized that philosophy.

The unit ranks last in the Great West Football Conference in scoring defense and fourth in overall defense, it but hasn't allowed a fourth-quarter score in any of SDSU's three comeback wins against ranked teams.

Today, the Jacks will face a William Penn club - led by All-American running back James Jackson, who began his career at Division II Virginia State - that was held without an offensive touchdown last week and is giving up more points (24.4 per game) that it is scoring (17.1).

"We're a swarming defense," Kubesh said. "We don't have a lot of guys who are big monsters or anything like that, but we have a lot of guys who can run and want to get to the pile."

ABOUT WILLIAM PENN: Wisconsin-Lacrosse has been on the lips of Statesmen coaches, as well.

"We let our kids know about that, but, boy, that was a long time ago," Hafner said, "and if you're watching their films, they're a completely different team than they were at that time. We're going to expect the team that's won five in a row."

William Penn has been in this spot before; this will be the team's third game against a I-AA opponent in as many years. The Statesmen lost 59-9 at Southern Illinois in 2004 and 28-0 at Maine last season. But Hafner said the trip is worth more to the program than the payout it will receive - $27,500 to fill the date once occupied by Northern Colorado, according to SDSU associate athletic director Rob Peterson.

"We look at it as an opportunity for us to go play a great football team," said Hafner, whose stable of assistants includes his dad, Greg, and his brother, Aaron. "We know we're probably a little overmatched, but we're going to tell our kids it's a chance for you to prepare yourself to play at a different level. And it's an opportunity for you to go play some of the best competition in I-AA."
