Oskaloosa--The Statesmen football team will look to pull what would be the biggest upset in school history when it faces nationally-ranked NCAA Division I-AA South Dakota State Saturday. . . .
Saturday’s meeting will be the first between the two programs on the gridiron, but will be the third consecutive year the Statesmen will face a I-AA opponent. South Dakota State (5-3), a member of the Great West Football Conference, is actually only halfway through its transition to become a full-fledged I-AA (D-I for all other sports), moving up from a D-II institution. Upon final approval from the NCAA, the Jackrabbits would be eligible for postseason play in 2008.
Penn has also faced I-AA teams the past two years, playing Southern Illinois in 2004 (L, 59-9) and Maine in 2005 (L, 28-0). . . . (read more)
