Re: Pride won't play at November games?

Why not try to set up an alumni band to play at the NDSU game? The Pride could use it as a fundraiser.

I hate hearing the school songs being played through the sound system, it just aint right.

I'll pull out my trumpet if I have to. I was second chair in sixth grade.

Re: Pride won't play at November games?

I don't care who needs to swallow some pride on this (no pun intended), but the band needs to play for the NDSU game. Depending on the results of our next 2 games, this very well could be the biggest game in recent SDSU history. If NDSU comes into the game undefeated and we beat them, it could arguably be the biggest win in SDSU football history. Considering where we are in our transition to D1, where we are in our quest to become a dominant football program and considering what NDSU has done this season (they will likely come into the game as the #1 team in the nation - and we will likely be ranked if we win our next 2), it is easy to argue this is as important as any game a SDSU football team has played in the last 40 years. And the band can't be there because its cold?

This isn't an argument about who's right or who's wrong. SDSU, as an entire university, should recognize the importance of this game and do everything possible to support our football team and our university. Someone tell me I'm overstating this game. Sure, if we get our rear-ends handed to us, it's an embarassment, but it's NDSU with possibly their best season ever so we'd be just like every other team they've played this season. However, if we win, we beat one of NDSU's best teams ever, win our first conference title in decades, and roll into full-fledged D1-dome with some serious steam. The band being there is a must. Rain, sleet, snow or shine. They have to play. Any argument that they throw out for not playing is pure selfishness on their part. Sorry.

And just for the sake of laying all my cards on the table, I am a big supporter of the pride and band in general. Aside from playing sports while in high school, I was also a proud member of the Miller Jazz and pep band. My cousin and I both took great pride in playing in the band (cousin ended up as a captain for the 1999 Jacks football team), as did most who hail from Miller. I recently wrote a letter to the Miller Press expressing my feelings towards my band instructor who recently retired - someone I penned as one of my all-time best coaches. So, I'm far from a band hater. Having said that, the Pride needs to play the NDSU game. No argument to the contrary makes any sense.

I wonder if NDSU is bringing their band? I remember their band made the trip to Brookings back in 2004 for the Beef Bowl. Can you imagine how embarassing it would be for the NDSU band to be at the game while our band sits at home sipping hot chocolate?

MJA's right on here. This may be the biggest game SDSU has played at home since making the transition. The band must be in the stadium for this game.

Rep points on that one MJA. Couldn't agree more. If we want to be a player in the big picture of things, we need the band. I don't think Michigan or Ohio State band would stay home. If we want to be a D1 school, let's look like one.

I couldn't agree more MJA. The NDSU game has potential to be one of the biggest in SDSU history.

Yup. I think one way to tactfully express this opinion would be to send a note to the Alumni Association and ask them to express our opinions. Email or call Matt Fuks (89rabbit) at the Alumni Association and ask him to make some inquiries. I think a groundswell from alums will be the most powerful message that can be sent. Angry letters to anybody else will just cause people to dig their heels in.

Overstated? It was priceless! I think you have perfectly stated the feelings of the vast majority of Jacks fans!

Or you can write letters to the editor in the register and collegian to let the community know about what their precious "Pride" is doing or not doing for the biggest game of the year. People think the Pride only does good. I have had 50 people in the last couple of weeks tell me the only reason why people come to football games is the Pride. I tell them the only reason I come to a football game is to watch the game and not worry about a band no matter how much hype they have. People get very offended when I tell them I am not a big fan of the Pride. Oh well.

I've had the same experience numerous times. Is the pride impressive? Yes. Do they seem smug and arrogant when it comes to performing at football games? Yes. We should no longer feed the monster that is the Pride and look at the bright side. Extra seats and extra ticket revenue.

Here is my question about impressive. How or why is it impressive to see the same performance three or four times a season? They have been playing the pride is back when they take the field for 20 years, they play the same four songs during intermissions, and they do the same performance at half time for every game. I know it takes a lot to choreograph the movements of their half time show but I feel like they quit trying years ago. Where has the drum line gone? Couldn't the Tubas or Brass perform something different?
The best thing they do now to add atmosphere is when they march into the stadium, they play the first down song and play the school song. That is it. They quit playing halfway through the second quarter and then only play half heartedly for the very end of the third and the fourth quarters.

Ok my rant is done and over with.

As I stated on a different thread, the Pride's November absence is a symptom of the overall condition of the SDSU fan base: football season is over after Hobo Day.

The current Pride set-up at CAS and the current size of the Pride make the process of getting positioned for the halftime show (and returning to the stands) a long, drawn-out process that is quite inefficent, but is likely only remedied by a new east-side grandstand and the relocation of the Pride to that side.

Yes, the Pride has areas for improvement, but don't we all? We should be happy that SDSU has such a strong music program (despite not being the state's "liberal arts" school...just look at their "marching band") and that the Pride does contribute greatly to the atmosphere at CAS. (which we should all agree on...otherwise, no one would care about the Pride's absence for the NDSU game)

For those who are very concerned/upset, give feedback to the Music Department and the Athletic Department about the Pride...

As for the NDSU game, I have been told by one Pride member that the logistics for uniform turn-in/dry-cleaning/re-issuance for the California trip would be next-to-impossible if the Pride were to play at the NDSU game. I won't pass judgment on that comment.

Play in blue jeans and yellow & blue t-shirts/sweatshirts/coats. That is a lame excuse for not playing.
