I agree: "Football should be played OUTDOORS!"

I didn't intend to start a dome discussion in this thread; I was just trying to point out that even if SDSU were to significantly upgrade our stadium, we wouldn't have a shot of hosting the state FB championships because of the potential pitfalls of playing outdoors in November.

          Re: Football's future upgrades

I believe that the Iowa state high school championships are played in the UNI-Dome.

Somehow, I doubt that this troubles Iowa State or Iowa fans very much. And yes, those two are BS and UNI is CS (nee I-AA), but still, I don't think the dome itself is an issue.

Generally, an upgrade of player facilities and stadium seating and amenities for the fans are what's needed. Domes, once built, are pretty much what they are--they can't easily be expanded, either in seating or in amenities, without spending a lot of money. Outdoor stadiums are cheaper to improve--more bang for our buck, so to speak.

                Re: Football's future upgrades

I think we have to be realistic and not think about happy beer talk and a Taj Mhal football staduim paid for by some one else. Brookings without the students is less than 20,000. Fargo is 100k plus, and Grand Forks I believe is over 50k and more like 75k so marketing to an immediate local population is not a big part of the plan as it is with the NODAKS. In both cases the city was involved as they wanted a convention center to draw people and events to their community.  These activities have nothing to do with NDSU or UND athletics. NDSU and UND both pay for useage of their domes so town and gown arrangements are not totally good especially when you have to pay rent for a home game.

SDSU through extension services is connected to every county in SD. We have alums in every county. So SDSU best potential lay in developing a state wide following that including Sioux Falls.

As others have alluded the Swiftel Center was a very controverisal building and what is now in existence was done with courage of those involved as they were thought to have lost their minds by many people around Brookings. As with the Anti D1 people, they say very little now days.

The Swiftel with the right kind of turf I suppose could be used as a practice facility, but as the Argus article pointed out, there are plans to build this facility on campus and that will also help out other sports specifically track and field indoors. So that idea of turf in the Swiftel would be a duplication in facilities and also would require SDSU to pay the city rent for useage of practice facility. An on campus facility make more sense and gives SDSU full control. The equestrian team is paying the Swiftel Center for useage for their events and I dont know how big of an expense this is, but they too have plans of an on campus facility.

USD seems to have our number in that sport as the Dakota Dump seems to be good for indoor track and field and that new facility will help us catch up in those sports.

The article I felt pretty much covered where we are. We should be thankful that people like Dana Dykhouse are involved. If there were no target dates set as alluded to by Terry in the article, then we can do two things: 1 be patient 2. write a check to SDSU Foundation and make it known that your gift is to be directed towards scholarships or facilities. There seems to be at this point more needs than resources. Drinking beer and thinking about that new staduim that Budweiser or Coor is going to build does not help out at all.

Amen! Fu#k Domes. If you're not willing to face the elements then you should be a basketball fan . If SDSU ever gets a Dome I will stop going to SDSU football games. Football is a man's game and watching it outdoors takes a real man not sissies like down in Vermintown.

bluehat, are you trying to make a new man rule?

Of the regional I-AA (or soon-to-be) scholarship teams, which is the nearest team with an outdoor stadium? Montana State or one of the Gateway schools? NDSU, UNI, UND, and USD all play indoors......in some ways, it puts us at an advantage (uniquenss, weather can be tough for opposing teams in November) but also puts us at a disadvantage (small crowds in Nov., some players prefer playing indoors).

I'm sure the athletic department has discussed an indoor stadium at some point and probably ended the discussion prety quickly.......

                      Re: Football's future upgrades

I definetly agree with playing outdoors... BUT... Why not throw some field turf down on Coughlin-Alumni??? The mud from week one of this year cost us a win.. and a couple of years back we had an ICE BOWL against Augie... The players were all wearing their turf shoes for that game! There is nothing wrong with a nice FAST track (free of a big crown for drainage)!

Yes New Man Law, Football was made to be played outdoors, not in a dome.

Not to be argumentative, but mud didn't lose us that game.

Poor preparation/execution and looking ahead to Montana did.

Field turf is definitely on the radar screen in the athletic department . . .

There's nothing wrong with domes. Ask the Vikings, Rams, Colts, Falcons, UNI, USD, UND, NDSU, to name a few if they like playing in domes and if it helps their team, and I'm sure the answer will be yes.

This is a silly discussion. The 80-100 million it would take to build a small dome is fantasy. Why waste time even discussing. For a fraction of that money we can rebuild Coughlin into a premiere D-1(playffoff eligible) stadium. (ex. U of Montana). Thats a realistic goal, but even that goal is going to be tough as far as fund raising.
