They created the student tailgate lot in the gravel lot across from the SJAC. Students have refused to go there for the entire year and not just Hobo Day. It just does not have the same draw as the Backyard. They have even tried providing food, like Qdoba and Culvers, for those who come up from the Gameday Walk, but they never stay.

I didn't see the beer throwing incident, but as I was participating in the Pride Alumni Band and as we paraded through the Backyard I remember thinking to myself... "how do some grown adults act like this!?" I'll admit I've probably done and said some stupid stuff while being drunk before but don't think I have ever made a fool of myself like some of the things I have seen in the Backyard.

Done; but, note that the thread title on each individual pre-change post remains unchanged.

The one rule change that may work at keeping the amoeba out of the backyard is: no loitering (have to find a better word) in or on the vehicle/walking paths separating the tailgating spots.

And I thought the rock band in the student-tailgating area was excellent.

maybe i would need a map but i am not picturing it very well what you guys are talking about. So the students are just hanging out in the main tailgait lot behind the field house....and they have a student area somewhere else?

This season the students gather at the intersection of the north/south path which is on the east side of the alumni tent and the west side of the Chain Gang's area, and the east/west path which is on the south side of the alumni tent and the north side of the Chain Gang's area. From that intersection, the mass grows and expands primarily to the west.

The student tailgate area is marked to be across from the Backyard on the west side of the road near the curve in the road. There is a large piece of equipment with a sign reading student tailgating for that area. It has an area that would accommodate the large crowd of students complete with a band to entertain.

I guess other years I thought students tailgated in the hper lot and fields by the wellness center. Walking through it one year my wife and I were a little surprised that no one in the entire group new how to use a garbage can. There were several around but empty, we were walking on platic cups and beer cans. Students were fine but it looked trashed. If we were students parents walking around before a game, I know we would not have been impressed. I know its not a huge deal, but have a little pride in your school, use the garabage cans. Hopefully the students stay for the whole game and dont leave at halftime.

They could also require a game ticket, or be escorted by a person with a ticket, to enter the backyard. Students don't have tickets. Problem solved.

That would require that the entire area be fenced in with limited entrances so you could check everyone.

I'm not sure I want to chase the students out of the backyard. I like the backyard being open to students but if the students want to congregate, that can be encouraged to happen elsewhere -- like in the area to the east now set aside for student tailgating. We want students to have a great time so that they become consistent fans after graduation.

When I was a student there was no tailgating. I was however a student during the 1990 riot. I saw Friday night what mob mentality can do, heard news and whispers on how it'd be even bigger Saturday night. This was long before social media and flash mobs. My roommate and I stayed in Saturday night and still heard the roar and ruckus outside of Young. I think students should be allowed to tailgate, give them a few areas spread around the lots designed for 50-100 kids each. Police each one as best you can for underage drinking and so forth. A deterrent more so, possibly have different alumni or clubs sponsor said areas. Tailgating should be fun and safe, I'd hate to see it escalate and become a black eye for the institution. God forbid it caused them to reconsider and get rid of tailgating.
