Probably a carryover from the track that used to surround the football field. Merriam was talking about that on the radio broadcast.

In the past this was common. Howard Wood Field built about the same time as CAS has a track around the football field as did State Field now known as Sexauer Field had a track. I never got to Inman Field at USD but would not be surprised to be told that the football field was surrounded by a track.

That stadium is an absolute wreck. It's in a great spot on campus, but it's an eyesore from the outside and just doesn't have any amenities of any kind inside.

Nice article on SBNation talking mostly about how bad Kansas is, but it gives a lot of respect to the Jacks.

I ran on the track at Kansas which went around the football field. (Also ran on the track at USD's Inman Field which, if my memory is working, was an unusual configuration because the north stands (primarily students) were inside the track while the south stands were outside the track. The Inman Field configuration was actually a good compromise because one side of the stands was real close to the field. Only minor drawback was in the early spring meets, the shadow of the north stands resulted in the north side of the track still having snow piled up on the sideline.)

Kansas did a major renovation to the stadium which included moving the track, about 15 years or so ago...not positive on the date. I think the place would appear nicer in one's mind if they could get a consistent winner on the field and consistently fill the stands with fans.

For you old timers: I met Gayle Sayers in that stadium during the Kansas Relays. Sayers was retired from the NFL and was an assistant AD for his alma mater, Kansas. SPELLING CORRECTION: Gale Sayers. CORRECTION: Track removed from Memorial Stadium at Kansas in the summer of 2014 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memori...sity_of_Kansas) )

              Rewatching the game:
1st Drive: Landbergs effort/route needs to be better on the bubble screen at the goal line. I don't like the play call overall.

KU first drive: Farina had two missed tackles. Penalties derailed their drive. Nice jump on the pass by Dallas Brown, phenomenal recognition.

2nd Drive: Mengarelli's run was really really good. Nice power and elusiveness.
Kick return: stay in your lanes
3rd Drive: we are lucky their wasn't an INT on Wesleys tip. OL is dominating at this point. We really did a good job of running crossing routes and swing passes with the run. The run that got called back because of a false starts would have been huge. I expect to see that play again out of the three back backfield. The play action pass is going to be huge for us this year.

KU third drive: got away from the run

4th Drive: OL is just dominating. Just great blocking. Wesley made a nice catch across the middle. Cool spin by Wallace. I liked the draw call, Wallace stumbled a bit. Great catch by Wieneke, wow!

KU: Kinner runs hard. Nice play by Mears to force the fumble. QB appeared to have a WR open across the middle, but chose to tuck and run.

5th Drive: I like the call to take a deep shot on the first play after the turnover. Aggressive. Phenomenal blocking on the screen/swing pass for the TD. Absolutely perfect execution.

KU: not sure why they brought in the true freshman for two incomplete passes. Seems like a weird way to burn a redshirt, but maybe it was the the thing that Cozart needed to wake up. The short yardage runs that we gave up on the 4th downs had to be tiring for the defense. Nice play call on the reverse, we were flowing really hard and not staying home.

6th Drive: two runs and an incomplete pass. Mengerelli missed a big cutback lane on 1st down.

KU: ramping up the tempo now. Kinner is a good back. 58 made a great tackle on a screen pass that could have gone for big yardage.

7th Drive: great opening pass and catch to Goedert. Lujan bad miss to Mengarelli out of the backfield. On the third down pass to Wienekee, he had Wesley open up the seam.

              Halftime
KU: we have really good CB, I don't understand why we play so far off of them. A lot of missed tackles.

8th Drive: This is when Lujon gets wild and KU's defense gets going.

KU: Cozart is running all over us. I wish we just had Dallas Brown shadow him. Farina took a terrible angle on Kinners TD run, but Kinner is pretty good.

9th Drive: got away from our crossing routes and seemed to just be taking shots down the field. Lujon was really trying to get Landberg involved, just wasn't clicking.

KU: d-line had a really good drive. Two dead runs and s nice pass rush on 3rd down.

10th drive: Landberg and Lujon finally connect. Dumb penalty on Seiter. Drop by Wesley is unacceptable, perfect pass from Lujon. Then Lujon got killed by the blitzed the next play. We are lucky he didn't get hurt. Big conversion on 4th down. Charlie Harmon appears to be quite the run blocker. Wallace missed a big crease on the stretch run play to the left. Landberg ran his route kind of weird or Lujon threw it weird on third down not sure what happened. Overall nice drive and response.

KU: we look gassed. Lots of missed arm tackles. Surprised Cozart didn't keep it on some of the read options. Great play by the freshman Taylor forcing the TE too close to the sidelines.

11th Drive: really nice runs by Wallace. Wesley with another drop, Lujon threw it behind him and if it is on the money it should be a TD. Catch by Goedert was huge on 4th down. Just awesome.

KU: poor time management. Our defense is trying, but they are tired. Farina got beat badly for the TD pass.

12th Drive: nothing cooking, just running down the clock. Smart plays by Lujon to not force it. Just keep the clock moving.

KU: line drive punt could have terrible. Yikes! Cozart is a competitor. Limping around, but still making plays. The fumbled snap was pretty bad. Wow!

Sorry for the length of this post and for any butchered names.

I personally thought the D tackles had a respectable game. They typically got good push. Kellen Soulek and Cole Langer are incredibly athletic and mobile for their size. As far as D ends, Banasiak and Plote just played alright. I loved the effort from #58 Chase Kern. He is an intelligent player and talented on top of that. Expect to see a lot of him this year. It is a tough match up for the D ends. Having a quarterback with that kind of mobility is tough to sack. I'm sure they were instructed to have more of a contain mentality too. My mind on our pass rush this year won't be made up just yet.

If I didn't know any better watching mengaerilli I would have sworn that was still zenner in the backfield. Almost a clone of his running style. I liked seeing mulitply running formations and different personal on the field. Ran the flash and just a good run game plan.

I couldn't believe the half page article in the Sacramento Bee and large photo of Jack's players after the game (By Dave Skretta-Associated Press). The Bee doesn't do anything like this even on colleges and universities in the area. Really good promotion for SD State. Those of you who post articles like this can look it up--be much better then me trying to figure out how to do it!!!

Thanks for that link, 73alum! Wonder why the Sacramento Bee picked up the story...but glad they did. The Bee has the fifth greatest circulation of dailies in California. Can't buy that attention!

                            JackJD,

Good memory on Inman Field. The north side was inside the track where the students sat. Also, there were bleachers on the west end inside the track. The south side was permenant and was outside the track. A little humor about this setup was when we played we had the infamous 12 minute run. That was to gauge the condition players were in. Anyway, many of the "big boys" would get behind the north bleachers and either gasp for air or puke, get their 2nd wind, then come exploding out from the bleachers like they were shot out of a cannon. Lol

Congrats on your win in Lawrence. I was at the game then drove to Manhattan for the USD game. The first 25 minutes of the game you played really well.

Lastly, congrats to Zack Zenner for making the Lions. What a great story. A good week for the Jacks

We had a fun time at the game with some of our in-laws who are also SDSU grads. What an amazing start to the game, we smacked them hard in the mouth. Thankfully, we had built up enough of a cushion in that second half.

We also snapped a few photos from the game that can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3215639&type=3

We are looking forward to the game in October at Missouri State. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going and stay focused on the goal of 1-0 every week until the national championship!
