    Re: UC-Davis Game Day Thread

Here is my take. D played great. Glad to see we were agressive. Got in the back field a lot got a lot of pressure. Good coverage for the most part. Line kept containment well. LB were amazing I thought. Just every where it seemed.

Punt team was a joke. Embaressing. Why are you back pedaling to catch it over your head inside the 10. Why when we are in punt return we don't communicate a short punt where our guy was unaware it was going right for him until he got hit. Lucky we kept the ball there.

Offense was so so. Great run blocking poor pass blocking. But some of that was Wrs not breaking coverage and summer not doing check downs and holding to long when the play wasn't there. Zenner was amazing. We could be watching something we will be talking about for a long time. Need sumner to play smarter and do his checks. Missed several wide out guys. Still would like to see more vareity with play calling and formations. But with a young group of play makers that can happen. Glad to see tight ends used more. The timing for the seam routes seems to go well.

Crowd didn't have a lot to get excitied. What was the attendance? I'm just going to say we need a new stadium. Its so crowded in the season ticket seats. We are on the alise and its just stinks literallt sitting shoulder to shoulder and knees in the back. If we want more attendance we need more room and seats.

As a former band member it sure looked like the band has gotten smaller. The black pants are not flattering and don't fit in with the colors at all. Look way to plain. Miss the cape too. Hey jude sounded really good.

I thought our defense was simply spectacular. So was Zenner, and the offensive line had a lot to do with that, of course. Sumner was not. He missed a lot of receivers and took too many sacks. I think some of the accuracy issues still have to do with the injury. Hope so, anyhow. He missed an open receiver the play before the pick six, and those two plays combined with the previous fumble caused me to lose it. The punt receiving was humiliatingly bad. Two fair catches inside the 10 and one at the 12, plus the panic cover up at the 2 or 3. I simply don't know what else to say about that. To not know better and be playing Division I football is...I just don't know how it can be. It's just sheer stupidity. Our punting, on the other hand, was very good. I think slogged out a victory against a not-terribly-good opponent today. We'll have to play much, much better offensively to compete in most conference games. Yards will need to be converted to points, and we'll have to force more turnovers on defense.

Really disappointed in the crowd. It was a great day for football. Nearly every seat should have been filled. The students were fired up, but everybody else just kind of sat there. Of course, there wasn't a heap to cheer for from the offense...not in the scoring department, anyhow.

Just for the heck of it, I'll toss out some grades offhand here.

      Pass offense: C-
      Run offense: A-
      Run defense: A+
      Pass defense: B-
      Special teams/kicking: B+
      Special teams/receiving: F
      Coaching: C
      Crowd: C-
Grumbling along and embracing my role. If I didn't care, I wouldn't care. Go Jacks!

Basically our offense should only get better. We are not as good as we should be but will be able to put points on I think enoigh to win most games.

Defense will need to be amazing most games need to make some turnovers but have the bend don't break and an aggressive.

Speical temas punt and kick coverage is solid kick return decent but punt return sadly will cost us a few games this year if they don't turn it around. Either in giving us bad field position or turning it over muffed punts. What I wouldn't do to see paul annenson returning punts for us again. If this doesn't improve it will give us a losing record in confrence play.

I'll take an ugly win over a good looking lose any day.

I am cautiously optimistic after the first 3 games, for the looming question marks coming into the season were: 1) can we play defense 2) can we run the ball.

I think the answer is "yes" to both of those.

One thing I didn't question coming into the season was the talent we had in the passing game, and I still don't. It's still there, it just hasn't gotten in sync yet. It's also important to remember we still have a banged up QB, plus our top receiver and 2 starting linemen didn't play in the game either.

I was impressed with JeRyan as with TJ Lolley and other R-Fr. I believe we have some talent coming and some are getting to their chance to shine early in the season.

Good for Je Ryan. Offically 4 tackles. I hope we see more of him.

Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

That is correct. Handiling deep punts and KO's seems to be the big hang up and I am sure they will work on it. Getting Sumners thumb healed seems to be a bigger concern in my mind. We might end up seeming more of Eric Kline if this situation continues to fester.

Moore is but Stig coaches the punt return group and as most of us here have noted it is simply embarrassing and high school players do better! How many games is it going to take really to find someone that has a clue to what they are doing? If all else fails just find someone to fair catch it and don't drop it. It is really that simple. Defensively did anyone notice how soft again we are playing the cover 3 in the secondary. At times we were more than 10 yards off their Wr's and its a simple run a 5-8 yard hitch, turn around and catch it. Wish we would play a little tighter. Offensively at times we looked good but 2 key turnovers certainly hampered us. Now that the Valley games are starting I think we all know that 12 points a game will more than likely not win many if any at all. I still believe we have the talent to put more points on the board and I think we will. Have a great week of practice Jacks. Ind. St has a heck of a running back and I think its essential that our offense controls the ball to keep the ball away from him. I think he torched us for around 200 yards last yr. at Coughlin. A HUGE win on the road this week could set up some things for us as we then host Missouri St and I could easily see us at 4-1 if we could somehow pull it out at 3-0 Ind. State. Good luck Jacks!!

I was telling my buddy the dame thing. Why in a passinf doen maybe 3rd and 5 to go do we give them a 10 yeard cuhsion. Our corners are talented enough imo to put some pressure so they don't just run past the 1st down marker turn and catch it.

This has always been the case in recent years. It's never changed.

Before the wheels completely fall off on a win.....

OL Fick and Parker back in the lineup will take care of those extra sacks
Rollin in the lineup will take care of the WR's, essentially the two top WR's from last year are not on the field and Sumner(with an injured thumb) still threw for about 200 yds.
UC Davis' defense is better than we are giving them credit for, just like State they kept us from running one play beyond their 25 yd line. That's a heck of an effort.
Good Defense plus Great Running Game=SDSU football, always has(except for last year)

Only issue: Need to get Zenner more rest. Gandy needs to get in the game plan more. Personally,I would have liked to see the Flash with the TE's, just wanted to see it.

P.S. Bell rushed for 349 yards this week. Game on.

This team is good. This is the game next week that we have to lay it on the line.

Exactly,we give up way too many first downs because of this,if the db gets fooled and beat long, isn't that what the safety is for,to prevent the td?I know it depends on how many eligible receivers are out.i'm not a great football mind, just asking someone more knowlegable what they think. Are we way too conservative,or is giving the 10 yard cushion the smart thing to do?I think taking a chance for a pick 6 every now and then puts pressure on a team in a different kind of way, even if it doesn't work but is close to working, and,if you do get one ,it changes the game in your favor real quick like.I'm really torn on this,i'm real conservative by nature, but don't like to see us as a team that never goes for the game changer every once in awhile.I don't like a team to become predictable, you have to have confidence in your teamates to cover your back if you go for it.Being too conservative makes the oppositions play calling, and game preparation way too easy after they watch the game films.Being too conservative is just about as bad as being too reckless,it just takes longer and in smaller increments to do the damage. Its all a confidence and trust thing ,in my opinion, how football defenses play.
