    Re: Indiana State

I've read a lot of comments about how far we have slipped since our playoff run of only 2 years ago and where we stand as a coaching staff. My first thought was we had a ton of ability on both sides of the ball that we just don't have now and maybe it was a once in a generation team. The more I dug into it, the more I realized how much talent we had and how spread out it was. In retrospect, I look back at that team and wonder how we didn't get farther. I think more and more the coaching staff has something to prove.

Here is the starting lineup from that Montana playoff game.

    POS ## OFFENSE
    QB 4 Thomas O'Brien
RB 30 Kyle Minett - All time leading rusher?

WR 17 Glen Fox - Pro tryout
    WR 82 Mike Steffen
TE 87 Colin Cochart - Made NFL Roster
    TE 47 Kyle Sheehan
LT 70 Casey Knips - Pro Tryout
    LG 73 Nate Koskovich
    C 60 Ryan McKnight - Pro Tryout
RG 77 Casey Bender - Pro Tryout
    RT 67 Jonathan Fick

    POS ## DEFENSE
    DE 91 Tony Thompson
    DT 95 Steven Bazata
    NT 98 Ross Basham
DE 54 Danny Batten - Made NFL Roster
LB 3 Jimmy Rogers - the legend
LB 43 Chris Johnson - Pro Tryout
LB 39 Derek Domino - Pro Tryout
    CB 28 Rodkem Matthews
CB 21 Cole Brodie - Pro Tryout
    FS 22 Anthony Wise
SS 18 Conrad Kjerstad - One neck injury from a pro tryout

In there defense on that one, they'd probably never saw 4 penalties on the same play.

I said hits he doesn't need to take. there was a few times where it looked like he went looking to get hit. That only last so long. I do think a lot of it is on the line though, seemed like he was bailing out early at times.

Loss for words. Most of which has been touched on. Kicking <26 yard field goals just isn't going to cut it. Why Kool was in inside the 10 and they kept feeding him the ball between the tackles is beyond me. And then he scores a TD (running outside) and they get called for holding. Jacks would have led at halftime if a Minett-type back was in there. And taking Moss out in the red zone is just dumb. ISU's CB's were dwarfs to him. Sumner looks fine. Some overthrows (and an underthrow on the 2 pt conversion), but for the most part, decent. Needs a running game to help the cause.

The wheels on the defense just fell off. They contained Bell pretty much the whole first half. I don't know the numbers, but obviously his 2nd half numbers had to have been staggering. And how a little back like that can carry the Jacks linebackers 5+ yards is just stupid.

Play(s) of the game. After cutting it to 17-15 ISU has the ball at about their own 30. 2nd and 8 and ISU gets called for holding, goes to 2nd and 18, they get 10 yards but called for a penalty again and it's 2nd and 26. They get 27 yards the next play. WTF?! Then they proceed to score. 20/20 hindsight, but you should probably decline the 2nd penalty because it still would have been 3rd and 9 with the yardage they got on 2nd and 18. You have to believe your defense can stop 3rd and 9 at least 80% of the time. Seriously. Then the pick-6. This was not a TOB pick-6 where a DB picks it off in the flat and has nothing but green in front of him. I swear every player on the Jacks team had a shot to tackle that guy. Have to make that tackle.

Disheartening. I really thought after the defense came to show ISU's who's house they were in after they held firm after getting stuck between a rock and a hard spot on the two very short fields ISU got in the first quarter. Even with the TD drive at the end of the first half and down 10-9 at half I was confident. That was squashed like a bug by the end of the 3rd quarter.

The holes in this sinking ship need to be fixed in a hurry. The first hole that needs a big plug is the defense, IMO.

The officials screwed up a whole bunch of calls on both sides of the ball and should be reprimanded in some way. They need to do a better job.
Holding on Oline or block in the back in the return game could probably be called almost on every team on every play. It does seem strange we get it called so much.

If Stig is out there yelling at the Refs, they must not have been doing well. when he gets animated yelling at them, they probably missed or screwed something up. He doesnt yell much IMO so he knew they were doing a bad job.

Lot of thoughts in my head with the highlights already touched on here. Our D-line is physically overmatched every game we play. Sure, we miss some tackles but a lot of the time we are just plain getting beat by bigger, stronger and faster players. The O-line doesn't seem to be able to establish much control of the LOS. Decent pass protection but limited running room. Sumner will force the LB's and secondary to respect the pass but at this point our O-line isn't able to take advantage. Kool isn't a RB at this level, time to abandon that at let him play in the slot. Zenner is the man for the RB spot. Our secondary isn't great but they would be good enough if we had any pass rush.

THIS!!! Kool is a very productive WR and Zenner and Kool are pretty equal at the RB position. Find a way to have the best players on the field.

This is obvioulsy not the answer to all our problems but it makes a lot of sense.

We may not be that great of a team but some of the things that have happened are just mind-numbing. Harris' injury was just an exclametion point for me and my heart goes out to him. I've never heard or seen anything like that. What's next? One thing is for sure, this team is due for some good fortune.

VandeBosch is constanly hurt along with most of their front 7. And you hold the Lions up as an example? C'mon man. There is an internship on the Jacks staff waiting for you. Why don't the Jacks go back to salt tablets with this logic? Talk to me about the Lion's coaching techniques when they win something. Don't compare them to the Super Bowl Champions. Last time the Lions were in the playoffs, I remember a certain Mr. Favre defeating them on a last second past.

Back to College Football, hard hitting practices aren't necessary after your 4th game. But that is what the Jacks know. Lose and hit harder as if it helps.

calmate buey, Lions fever catching on here. after so many bad seasons and the way the Jacks are playing a guy's got to be happy about one team and talk em up. Sorry they beat your queens.

I understand your point but he isn't going out of his way to find contact if there are other options. He only has time to make 1 or 2 reads if he is lucky before the pocket collapses. He usually rolls out of the pocket as far as I can see and looks to make a play on the run before tucking the ball. Unless the middle has a seam he takes it as far as I can tell. My guess is he is looking to turn something out of nothing instead of accepting nothing as the best option. He has yet to take a bad hit after running imo. He gives a better hit when he runs. I would be more concerned about an injury trying to avoid a sack or make a bad attempt to throw it away if he can at least get positive yards. Plus he is a big qb. Bigger then some of the people trying to tackle him. Well maybe not but they aren't much bigger. Plus it shows his teammates he will take a hit if needed to move the ball. If I was a player I would play harder and give more if I saw a freshman just starting doing everything he can to make a play if there are no other options.
