I'm late coming to the forum party, but I am still pumped up with our performance Saturday night. There were so many positives, from our outstanding line play and team prusuit on defense to TOB decisions on a conservative passing game. I heard so many positive comments from Husker fans about our on-field performance and from our great fan base.

First, I was so impressed with both sides of the line. I was sitting (standing) on the 3rd row behind the Husker bench on the 35 yard line. Many fans in the area were amazed on how the Husker lines were getting dominated. I was surprised by the restraint that the Husker def-line coach had with his players. You could see that they were getting frustrated by the consistant push were able to generate.

Minett was a stud. Time and again, he would wisely take what was given him and those 3 to 7 yard scampers were taking their toll on the Huskers.

I liked the game plan that Meadows came up with. It was simple, but it played to our strengths and avoided potential troubles going up against Nebraska's corners. Nebraska has the best defensive backs in college football. We avoided costly throws against them and focused more on Cochart where he could find seams and Minett on swing passes. Our wideouts were mismatched against bigger, faster, stronger dbacks. However, Cochart made some huge catches. I was also surprised that Minett was so open on the wings.

While I like the decision to thow in the endzone to Kool at the end of the game, it proved my point on the mismatch. On deep balls, we didn't have the size to go after jump balls outside of Cochart. Cochart had two catches that will be outstanding film for the NFL to view regarding his potential at the next level. The first was a pass across the middle in the 2nd quarter. The safety or linebacker was in perfect position to make a play on the ball. Colin jumped and reached around him to take away the ball on a nice gain. The second catch was in front of the Husker bench. O'Brien threaded the pass just beyond the corner and Colin had to layout to make an outstanding catch with his hands.

On defense there were so many things i loved seeing, but team pursuit was outstanding. There were always multiple players in position to make the tackle. Having 8 to 9 players in the box helped with that. It also took away the strength of QB Martinez, and that is his legs.

Lastly, the crowd was outstanding. Many Husker fans commented on the strong showing. On the post game call-in show, a Husker fan said that he never has heard a stronger visitor cheering in all of his years at Memorial stadium. Even during critical stands in the second half, while all 85,000 fans were raising their voices, you could always hear "Let's go Rabbits" cutting through the noise.

A strong sentiment was to watch not only our fans standing ovation as our players left the field at the end of game, but the large group of Husker fans cheering our players too. After hearing for months that the Huskers should never had scheduled this game, the fans in both red and blue appreciated our showing.

After reading through some of the comments regarding the playcalling and not playing to win I just wanted to through in my 2 cents.

I actually thought the playcalling was pretty good for the most part. We knew a few things going in....

1) We needed ball control because with their play makers, the more they were on the field eventually they were going to break a long one....even though were we shutting them down it wouldn't happen forever.

2) We needed ball control because we don't have their depth and we couldn't afford to have our defense on the field that long.

3) Nebraska's defense basically runs a 4 man front, 1 linebacker and 6 db's. All we had to do was get passed the line of scrimmage on the run and we were going to pick up a few yards. That is why their linebacker, David ended up with 19 tackles. Their secondary had 8 interceptions and 3 touchdowns during the first 3 games, we wanted TOB passing why?

If I looked at the scoreboard correctly, at the 5 minute mark in the 3rd the time of possession was 25 minutes SDSU and 15 minutes Nebraska....that is why we were in the game.

My only questioning of the playcalling was why we went into shotgun or wildcat at 4th and 1 at the goalline. their defense is way too quick to snap the ball 5 yards back and expect to get in. Either a TOB sneak or Minett and if they stop us then so be it.

Otherwise great job Jacks....the "Lets go Rabbits" cheer was awesome ....Nebraska fans just let it happen the first time. That never happens at Memorial Stadium, I'll remember that for a long time to come.

We played with a lot of heart and intensity.

I know people say there is no such thing as a morale victory.....screw that...the team that walked out of that stadium is far more confident than the team that walked in.

A very good post. I would agree with all said. At the Difference Makers meeting on Sept 8, Stig made a couple of references to the then upcoming Nebraska game so apparently, the staff worked very hard on a game plan. Stig also said they had eleven videos of Nebraska games. Stig is not one to get ahead of schedule, but this one they worked very hard on the game plan, possibly all summer long.

As a jackrabbit fan in NE you must be extact at work today. Friends of mine that work and live in Omaha are the same way. The one friend is going to bake Red-frosting Cupcakes and bring them to work. If this sounds odd and don't know what I'm talking about, the Omaha World Herald's saturday morning paper had a front page of a bunch of yellow and blue cupcakes and was titled "made to Order". I actually thought it was funny, considering the coverage that SDSU got for this game was probably more then we get in a few games here in SD(not saying TV's isn't the best beat-writer you can have), it was worth soooooo much more than the $375K that we got to play this game. Thank you...thank you...thank you former NU AD Peterson!!

Had a lot of Husker fans come up to me after the game and say how impressed they were with our team. I think a lot of them also knew how close to a 17-17 overtime game that should've been too. Great fans and a great atmosphere. They definitely do it right.

Also, did anyone see that Saturday's attendence was the 9th largest crowd in Nebraska history? Awesome!!

Hopefully this jump-starts this team to an 8-0 finish, because the way this team played(especially the D) Saturday night, there's in NO REASON to think 8-0 to finish is unrealistic.

BTW...did anyone else feel a little "Baylor'd" after this game? I did just a little bit, but was still very proud of this team and the way they handled that atmosphere and the #6 team in the nation!!

When you speak of wildcat plays are you speaking of flash plays where TOB goes to the sideline and Minnett hikes the ball out of the shotgun and either passes or runs?

TOB has certainly not been impressive this year. May be time to take a look around.

At the game. I thought TOB was the better QB. Neb played the tightest coverage TOB and the jacks will ever see. They were not easy passes. Line did a great job. Penatlies were the big thing take away a few big plays we had. Still think the coaches need to work on his touch. He looks like Kardoes throwing as hard as he can on a dump pass to the RB back. His downfield throws are spot on in my book. Its the short stuff coaching staff needs to nail home with him. He never looked razzed out there IMO.

In other words: We finally played some Jackrabbit football.

That was also the response from Stig near the end of Saturday's Press Conference. The other comment made by many players and coaches was our defense really matured over the course of the game. Very limited missed tackles. I think we'll see good things against Northern Iowa this week.

Maybe some of the posters here who know more than I do about football could talk a little bit about the changes on the O-line. Seems to me that unit played a whole lot better yesterday with McKnight at guard and Will Castle at center. Thoughts?

I always wondered why the coaching staff was so high on Castle that they would let him sit behind mcnight when the Line needed help. It seemed to me one of them should be able to play over a spot to add depth and secure the line. I thought our Oline was awesome. D - line too. disapointed we didn;t get any sacks on them. Felt we have several chances too.
Oline played great with the move.

Decisive swarming gang tackling....that was the difference in this defense...what we're used to.

I also stand by that there is no way Nebraska could have prepared for this team....because this is the first time they've played all year. So there's no current video. And I am happy.

Nebraska newspaper questioned the 4th down wildcat goal line call also. Said Nebraska is too fast to trick them with that play.

I watched the replay of the game in HD TV today. For some reason the first quarter was cut off. The half time replay clearly show Kyle extending the ball over the goal line with his knees off the ground. The Nebraska announcers call it a clear touchdown. It would be good to know how the replay officials blew this call.

As for the Jack's INT called back - you can clearly see the block was below the waist; however, it did not have any affect on the play. I imagine it was called for the injury risk.

The papers also mentioned the class of SDSU's players - how they won't accept a moral victory.

Nebraska fans were very classy also and told us how great the team played.

Tremendous game for SDSU IMO. Great building game, but don't tell that to the boys or coaches.

I just hope the team stays as fired up for UNI as they did Nebraska. For the fanfare the Jacks got for a good game, the UNI is a much bigger game in the long run. A let down against the Panthers would negate anything from this game.

I just hope that the team learned that, when they play together, they can compete with anyone on any level.

You can't be serious about being disappointed that we didn't get any sacks. That dude is FAST!!!!! I'm pumped we were able to bottle him as well as we did. When the D starts collapsing for a sack is when he is most dangerous. The running lanes open up.

In regards to the goal line wildcat call, I wonder if the coaches had the 2001 NU/CU game (63-36) in mind. Colorado kept cutting back and letting Nebraska's quick linebackers over run the play and take themselves out of position. If I remember correctly, wasn't there some sort of misdirection to go with the goal line play?

I know, I just felt that he was litterally a hand away from being sacked a few times. Thats what I was refering too. Not that we couldnt, but were so close is what stunk. It was good hearing the D linemans name getting said for a lot of tackels. I thought Jeske did a great job out there also.
