    Re: Sanford Arena?

If there is 20 million for NDSU and BSA project, what could we expect in terms of a donation towards the retrofitting of Coughlin Alumni? I notice in may SDSU Foundation annual report, that Kelby Krabbenhoft is listed as one of many trustees. I dont know if this is the result of the gifts by T Denny for the student alumni center or the Science building or is this because of future projects such as upgrading CSA? It all makes you wonder.

It isn't because of the science building as that donation came from Avera

        Re: Sanford Arena?

Ok, going to be honest, I don't know if or what Sanford has donated to SDSU, USD in the past or ongoing, BUT, I for one am watching this pretty closely to see if they match it for the schools in the area that have been supporting Sanford/Sioux Valley Hosptials/clinics etc... for decades.

If they choose to donate what looks to be more than $20M to NDSU just because they are new in the area (Merit Care Merger) and it is a great marketing ploy forgetting those of us who have supported them through the years, not to mention the bad taste it left in my mouth that they incorporated in North Dakota ... lets just say, Avera is all over South Dakota too.

          Re: Sanford Arena?

Sanford (the man, I believe, in conjunction with the Dykhouse family) gave us a good chunk of cash for via the new student-athlete center, of course. And Sanford (the health care group) has done other work on the SDSU campus. But I don't think we're in the $20 million range. So, might I suggest, Sanford Field at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium? The NDSU partnerships have been talked about, on some levels, for months now. That's made me want SDSU to join the party, too. I hope we can. We have some ties. I wouldn't be too happy if Sanford poured all of its money up north because that's where it incorporated.
Grumbling along and embracing my role. If I didn't care, I wouldn't care. Go Jacks!

I understand that everyone wants Sanford to give money, but SDSU athletics is under Avera right now. NDSU changed to Sanford and that will greatly help them.

What do you mean by "under" Avera right now?

Avera is a major sponsor of both SDSU and USD athletics, maybe other universities in the state, I don't know. I don't think Avera is any more of a sponsor than other major sponsors.

                Re: Sanford Arena?

Since the merger, Sanford Health has roughly equivalent assets in the "north campus" (Fargo region) as in the "south campus" (Sioux Falls region). It is not just a South Dakota company. As for the supposed unannounced $20 million pledge to NDSU, we shall soon see. I have heard that NDSU has at least two other corporate donors that have pledged very large amounts of money toward the BSA renovation. My guess is that $20 million is closer to the total of unannounced pledges than the figure for Sanford alone.

But wasn't Sanford's ability to gain those "assets" for it's "north campus" paid for by mostly South Dakota, NW Iowa customers over the past 50 years??
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that's what people are saying when they might be slightly upset about all the "donations" going to the Fargo area. Not saying Sanford has any obligation to be fair when dolling out it's donations, but as far as PR goes...I'll say again leehajo's post alluded too...Avera is a very good hospital...most years it's in the top 100 in the nation from what I read.

You are wrong. Sanford didn't pay a dime for those assets. Sanford and MeritCare MERGED. No money changed hands.

There has been considerable angst on the ND side of this merger as well. While company leaders emphasized that this was "a merger of equals" and no money changed hands, the Sanford Health CEO became CEO of the new organization and the name of the whole will soon be Sanford Health. Some in North Dakota believe that MeritCare leadership gave away local control of our largest healthcare network. There is some truth in that, and that is one of the reasons why Sanford needs to make some capital investments in North Dakota.

There's still people out there that worked for Norwest Bank when them and Wells Fargo "merged" that still like to believe that it was a "merger of equals" when it actualy was when you look at the numbers...perception is reality my friend.

Not to mention the gigantic slice of Sanford revenue that comes from Medicare and the federal half of Title 19.

True. And the revenue coming into the organization on the ND side is comparable to the revenue on the SD side. I'm only pointing out that Sanford Health money in the merged organization is not just SD money. Carry on.

Aren't the athletes at SDSU under Avera's care? They see the Avera and the Orthopedic institute?

NDSU was Innovis (I think) and they moved to Sanford Health.

My question is that if SDSU was under Sanford Health would they benefit more from donations, etc? It was more question and speculation.

                            Make sense?

You're correct. I did the calculation based on Sanford being the only major donor. If there are more donors than just Sanford(and I hope there are), Sanford's contribution would have to be adjusted accordingly.

Orthopedic Institute is not affiliated with either Sanford or Avera. They are an independent physician owned clinic. It is a common mistake to assume that they are one in the same. I am particularly sensitive to such issues as an independent physician owner of a multi-specialty clinic in a community where Avera owns the hospital. Has independent physicians we see patients from Avera, Sanford, MeritCare, Medicare, BC/BS, etc....

                                From OI's website:

Orthopedic Institute, an independent physician group specializing in orthopedics, was founded in 1972 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The group has steadily grown in size and scope, today with 13 physicians and over 150 employees. An important milestone in OI's growth was the new building, completed in 2001.

Today, Orthopedic Institute is the largest orthopedic specialty group in the region. In addition to general orthopedics, areas of focus include the Spine Center, Sports Medicine Center, Lower Extremity Center, Joint Center and the Upper Extremity Center. The group also specializes in joint replacement, foot and ankle and pediatrics, and offers physical medicine.

Orthopedic Institute Clinics are located in Brookings, Mitchell and Yankton, in addition to Sioux Falls. Outreach is provided by the physicians of Orthopedic Institute to Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Freeman, Huron, Madison, and Vermillion, SD; Marshall, MN; and Rock Rapids, Rock Valley and Sibley, IA.
