Hmm... didn't know Merriam-Webster had a website to look words up at, figured they wanted you to buy the book!

Huh?? The bigotry that I see in this whole issue is that the University of North Dakota community is approaching the Natives of ND in a contridictory manner. Here is what appears to me to be a comprehensive view of Native Americans by the UND Community:

As an institution we offer to you programs of native culture and health care etc. We also honor you by using this image of a typical Sioux for our athletic teams. We hope you appreciate this honor, both academically and athleticwise. That way our fans can enjoy their beer and hockey at your expense

I heard a number of Native Americans ask: How does this logo honor me? It does not honor them and they feel insulted plain and simple. Sure there are some Natives that really dont care, but does that still make it right to use the logo? The Native American who does not have a problem with the logo is a human being same as you and I and its not about how a majority or a minority feels. If one person feels insulted by the logo, its offensive. The Natives are and have been on the receiving end of the bigotry. I think you know that.

As an academic institution UND is without a doubt way ahead of three flagship Dakota schools in reaching out to the Native community in terms of native studies and health care. UND also has the highest enrollment of Native Americans. For that I give them credit, but turning around with the use of an insulting logo is not the right image to project to the world, if you want to totally look at UND. UND is in my opinion a very good institution and I wish that the legislature of South Dakota had been as progressive towards higher education as the North Dakota legislature has been in the past. Both USD and SDSU would be much better institutions than they currently are.

Frankly, I think the NCAA has done the right thing in bringing this issue up. Who else would?

Are you saying that reservation life is fine? Or, to take it a step further, that everything that is wrong is out of the hands of the people who reside on the reservation? In the interest of keeping it short, I have traveled this state working with local law enfocement. I have seen alot. A relative is also in the same field and relays his experiences. Growing up my family did foster care, not for the money. We opened our doors to Native American kids and treated them as family, both when they lived with us and after.

There is no disrespect. I have just always found it interesting the activists who have chosen the sports nickname route instead of using that time, effort and money to try and change some of the issues that plague the Native Americans today. I don't view a name like the Indians or Red Storm or Warriors (all former team names) and look down upon the Native American people b/c of it.

Am I wrong or a bigot or disrespectful to say there are concerning issues with South Dakota reservations today? One person on here said we are obigated to help the Native American people. Can we do that if we turn a blind eye to the struggles facing them?

Keep up the good work. Keep the faith.
Tea, the assumption at the base of your statements is that they are not capable of doing both at the same time. They are and they do. I think that is what many people see as offensive in statements as the one quoted previously. Does that mean I think you are a racist or bigot? No, but it does mean that I think it is offensive to make that statement.

Much of the drive to lock schools into the Summit is tied into the likely split of the Big East from the unwieldy 15 school conference that it is currently. Most likely scenerio is to split along FBS football (8 teams) and 7 non-FBS schools. Look for especially the non-FBS schools to try and pick up top non football schools to compliment existing schools. This split is likely to occur in 2012-13, hence the drive to get new schools locked in during this transition time.

Big East has 16 for basketball, doesn't it?

Notre Dame is a Big East school for basketball, but an Independent for Football. So the Big East has 8 FBS schools, 7 Non-football schools, and 1 Notre Dame Independent FBS school=16 Big East Basketball Schools.

If you want to read one poster's opinion on how the University of North Dakota would (will) fit into the Summit League, I would encourage you to go to the Oral Roberts board and read Hammersmith's comments in post number 62 of the thread accessed by this link. You may have to register in order to read it.

I do like how he mentioned that UND would never challenge ORU, OU, IUPUI or NDSU for a title in men's hoops. He left out SDSU. I guess we'll see which Dakota school finishes higher this year....and next.....

people, THIS IS SERIOUS LAKESBISON HERE TALKING!

#1- UND is in shambles financially once Ralph and major donors stop giving money becuz of the name

#2- UND admin and fans mock and ridicule the SUMMIT LEAGUE, and NDSU/SDSU for moving up to D1.

#3- DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THE NASCAR-JERSEY WEARING FANS OF UND ARE GOING TO STOP WITH THE SIOUX NAME?? WITH CHANTS, AND YELLING SIOUX AT END OF THE ANTHEM???

DENVER is a much much bigger market for the SUMMIT, Hell, CHICAGO STATE is a much bigger market!

UND has no business being in the SUMMIT league, they will never change!

                        ok. read carefully, and understand.

                        thanks

I debated adding SDSU to that group. I left them out for two reasons. First, the list was getting too long. Second, remember who I was writing for. IUPUI is a known quanity for them, your MBB history is not. From their POV, you've never been a contender for the Summit crown. With the post already as long as it was, I didn't want to muddy things up any more than I had to.

No way Denver is a better option than UND. Your pure hatred for UND is clouding your judgement and common sense (not that you had any). Denver would add another school that is 3rd fiddle behind the two large state universities. I think there a lot of examples of bringing in schools in large markets does not necessarily enhance your league. If being in a large market is so great why does Denver average 2128 for Men's Basketball and 384 for Women's Basketball?

Probably same reason why UMKC doesn't draw. Lots to do in Denver on January nights and if the team ain't knockout special, well, there's lots to do in Denver on January nights. Not so much in Grand Forks, however.

Totally agree with the offering (with a side of rep points) that hatred of other institutions clouds analysis from time to time on this forum. Not all of it is directed at UND, too.

Valid point on the Jacks. Until SDSU proves itself with its new neighbors we won't be in the rarified air. Jacks WILL be there soon, though. CRR
