Minneapolis (target center) would be fun as hell!

    Chicago too would be Great.

    Kansas city.

    Las Vegas.

thats 4 places better than sioux falls.
I'd bet a fair amount of money that the only place on that list that would have a chance to draw as many people as Sioux Falls last year would be Minneapolis, but like I mentioned on Bisonville, I don't know who'd make a bid for it there and where they'd play (Target Center isn't exactly easy to get a hold of for 4 straight days).
If you think nobody cares about you, try missing a couple of payments.

I think Vegas could happen if the league would ok it...... I don't know what Casino it is but the one that has the arena that they play the thanksgiving weekend pre-season tournament at would be about the right size. Casino/resort could take a flyer on it..... the problem with that is many Casino's would rather have UFC, boxing match, convention.... something that is pretty garenteed to work....

IMHO Las Vegas for a Summit League tournament venue is simply crazy talk.

Fargo and Sioux Falls are set up to be the tournament venues for a long, long, long time. They're the only metro markets where the Summit is the biggest thing in town. Everywhere else, a Summit League tournament will be a sideshow to the big guys--Big 10, Big 12, Mountain West, or in Louisiana, the SEC.

In Kansas City for instance, the last time the Mid-Con's tournament was here, it was arguably third or fourth on the to-see tournament list that year, behind the Big 12 (which wasn't even here that year), the NAIA tournament, and the MIAA D-II conference tournament.

You need to put the conference tournaments where the (interested) people are, not require the interested people to travel to where you might for some romantic, non-economic reason want the tournament to be--especially as the economy keeps scuffling along like it is.

Could you imagine who many neutral fans would show up to a Summit League Tourney in Vegas... well, you have to have a good imagination, because you wouldn't see very many. If Oakland is playing Centenary do you think an SDSU or NDSU fan would be wanting to stick around and watch that game or go to the Casino? How many all session passes would be sold?

Plus, a fair amount of every fan base can't afford to take that kind of trip and take that much time off of work, and if you think the Southern Utah fan base is going to prop up the attendance numbers, you have another thing coming.

Bringing the tourney to Vegas would be a disaster, as I wouldn't be surprised if the "true" average attendance of each game was less than 1,000 people. The Twin Cities is the only major metro that I see being able to host a successful Summit League Tourney, though I still don't believe they'd outdraw Sioux Falls or Fargo.

What's so great about them? Increased traffic? Little support from the business communities? Indifference from the residents? Crime?

The Summit League tournament in Sioux Falls posted some of it's best numbers, attendance and revenue-wise in a long time, PERIOD! Why mess with something like that to only be a 5th or 6th-tier entertainment option in a "major" market? That's just universally stupid.

Keep the Summit League tournament in the Dakotas. Sioux Falls, Fargo, Sioux City (when USD decides to host) make more sense in terms of fan and financial support than those other places.

Or perhaps Lakes is just jealous that a little podunk "cow-town" like Sioux Falls and a little podunk "cow college" like SDSU could put on such a first-rate tournament. FYI, Lakes, NDSU is also a land-grant school, which also makes it a podunk "cow college".

The combined distance of the four Dakota schools to Fargo is about 570 miles to SF's 680. GF is the worst at 720 miles. It's not a huge difference, but it's something. I wouldn't be surprised to see a five-year average of Fargo x 2/SF x 2/Tulsa x 1. Or more accurately, SF/F/T/SF/F in a ten-year block starting with the next contract(2011-12) in SF.
I may be biased, but I think having it in Sioux Falls every year would be a great plan similar to the Valley's Arch Madness we would have the The Summit at the Falls. Sioux Falls is closer to the rest of the Summit schools than Fargo is. UMKC and Western Illinois could easily bus/drive it compared to Fargo. It is a neutral city (no Summit League team), has no other major draw at that time of the year, and has a nice line of resturants and other things to do. Getting a new events center would probably seal the deal.

I agree. Vegas would be a financial disaster for the Summit League. If the Summit is dollar driven and it is, I think SF has the inside track for the time being.

Cancun would probably be better than Sioux Falls or Fargo too, and has just as many connections to the Summit as do Minneapolis,Chicago or Vegas. Sometimes it's better to be a big fish in a medium-sized pond than to be a minnow in the ocean.

filbert is right in that this is crazy talk and insane. What casino will place a bid for approximately $300,000 to host a bunch of basketball teams from South Dakota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, etc. to only have 500 people in attendance? Answer= none.

It only makes sense to have the Summit Tournament where the schools are located, that is how you sell tickets and raise revenue for the league.

Sioux Falls in 2011 and 2012. Then possibly Fargo. Live with it! Those two cities have a lock.

IMHO, it's all about the money. I think it would be really cool to have the Summit Tournament on the moon. But if nobody shows up, and there are not corporate sponsors interested, how is that a good thing for the Summit?

                        2009 Summit League Revenue:
                        Corporate Sponsors: $300,000
                        Ticket/Concessions Revenue: ~$500,000 (34000 attendance x $15)

You are going to have to triple corporate sponsorship in order to get equivalent value in a venue like Las Vegas. And watching games in a half empty Target Center really doesn't interest me that much.

Sioux Falls, Fargo, and maybe Tulsa are the only sites that have a chance of generating the kind of revenue we saw this spring (and Tulsa would have to work their cans off to do it.)

I think if done right the tourney could be a cash cow in Minneapolis. Don't underestimate how well NDSU and UND travels to the Twin Cities. There would easily be double the amount of Bison fans in the Twin Cities in than Sioux Falls.

I'd bet NDSU, SDSU, USD, and UND are pushing 50,000 alumni in the Twin Cities. Minneapolis is vastly cheaper and easier to get to than Sioux Falls or Fargo for other league members.

It is the only major metro area that it could work in. Minneapolis has no conference tournaments and probably will never get one, all the Dakota schools have a ton of Minnesota athletes, it has the potential to get some decent media coverage.

I'd love to see the league try it.

I could see Minneapolis and Kansas City, even Chicago but Vegas??? You can't be serious? There are three teams west of the Missouri River (UMKC and Oral Robets are just on the other side) so no way would Vegas even stand a chance.

As others have pointed out, it would make absolutely no sense what so ever for the tournament to be held there.

And how exactly would it be better than Sioux Falls? Because all of the casinos there? Just because Vegas has a ton of things to do doesn't mean it is a good spot for a basketball tournament with pretty much all of the teams located on the other side of the Missouri River, look at how badly the NBA All-Star game failed there.

Good post, however for purely selfish reasons, I would say that I would like to see them try if it isn't going to be in Sioux Falls (no travel costs for me )
