Re: Omaha Herald: UNO plans to move DI, will drop football and wrestling

Also in the Sesker article if it wasn't about money for UNO to drop wrestling, why not let them join the Western Conf and wrestle with State and NDSU? Seems like a shame to scrap a program that is financially viable.
With fans like this who needs enemas.....

That's a good question. I wonder if the answer has something to do with Title IX.

It sounds like they are way out of Title IX compliance as it is*, and they're having to add two more men's sports to join the Summit(soccer & golf). Dropping football will be a big help, but I would suspect the only way that they could keep wrestling would be to add a women's sport(hockey). But if they could afford that, they probably wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

Summit footprint probably can't get much smaller.

Most of the fans and posters over on D2Football.com are either shell shocked or highly disappointed about this latest proposed move at UNO.

Ding ding we have a winner, seems like women's hockey ate a big hole in the budget at UND, in fact it still might be creating budget woes as we speak. Whats been mentioned is that attendence for football has been way down, like less than 3000. SDSU and NDSU both drew good crowds at Caniglia field and this has not happened since the NCC folded. Also other than NWMU, the fans do not travel in the MIAA like they did in the NCC. So that plus having to beg from the Nebraska regents for more money prompted this action, plus you have the Title IX compliance problems, and this might be the only option at this point in time.

D2 has no one to blame but themselves. If they hadn't allowed the division as a whole to cut football scholarships and hadn't let so many smaller schools in that were allowed to drag it down maybe they could have retained some of the better schools. I do have respect for D2 Athletics but I don't have respect for the way the division has let themselves slip.

it was a knock at the Big Sky, nothing against UNC, but only a few years ago they were in worse shape then UND is now and though they have improved I don't see them getting higher then a 5 seed at best in the Summit League.

As far as the move it looks like Title IX had a lot to do with it, still way more surprised with them dropping wrestling then I was with football, they got a lot of good wrestlers, and have recruited South Dakota in the past.

Agreed and that is why SDSU left and took a few with us like USD,

I said it then, and it's not far from fruition, we will end up in a glorified NCC..., and the net result will be more costs. Essentially renaming DII to D1 AA thus only really changing the name and the expense. Now, I have learned over the past couple of years the level of competition has increased and the games are arguably more fun to watch.

There have been undertones of the "BCS conferences" breaking away... I wonder how long until that happens, and the D1AA and Mid-major sports will essentially be the new D11?

I know also that I'm over simplifying this in a lot of areas (we now offer more scholarships ect...)

Did anybody else ever share these thoughts?
An interesting take, and I can't really strongly disagree. However I would rather be in the new DII than the new NAIA.

According to the World Herald, Title IX was a part of the equation. Money was the big issue, but they did have many hurdles to overcome.

Football would be dropped because the university simply can't afford to take the sport to Division I, given the 27 additional scholarships required and even more expense needed to meet gender-equity concerns.
Wrestling would be dropped to better align UNO's athletic department with the offerings of the Summit League. Instead, the school would add men's soccer and golf teams.

What has so many people in Nebraska upset is cutting wrestling. They have become the standard of excellence on campus and in Nebraska with their third consecutive national title. To drop that and add soccer and mens golf is a slap in the face. While Nebraska high schools have had a growing interest in soccer, interest in those programs championships is paltry compared to the following in wrestling. While football will always be king in Nebraska, high school basketball and wrestling are the only things that bridge the time between the Huskers football season and spring practice. (The only other exception may be volleyball.)

I'm afraid that what we're seeing here is Douple being desperate. He sees the end coming of ORU and Oakland and needs to make sure the Summit remains viable by bringing in any d2 transitioning teams in that he can. My guess is SCSU will be making the same announcement within the next couple of years, if not sooner. Their AD just resigned and it tells me that he did not want the pressure or work of moving to D1 and informing the community that they are dropping FB, Wrestling, etc. Same could be said for MSU-M. These two dropping sports to get into the Summit, makes way too much sense.

Welcome back NCC 2.0 I have to agree with UND fans when they came up with that name. It fits.

I hope my opinion doesn't come true, and I have no inside information what-so-ever, but I'm having a hard time believing this is an addition that makes the Summit League stronger. Especailly in the eyes of our top members, ORU and Oakland.

I guarantee that today, NDSU is fighting like mad to get into the MVC...SDSU should be also.

                          Fire away!!

Why are they upset about trading Centenary/SUU for USD/UNO? Heck ORU is just as close to UNO as NDSU is.

I can guarantee all the schools would have been a lot more frustrated with scheduling in a nine team league. It was a real problem that needed to be addressed. A number of sports were also just on the edge of losing their autobid if one school leaves.

Also where is Oakland going? They are blocked from the Horizon and the only place ORU could go is the Southland which is a lateral move at best.

I disagree, UNO and USD on the field will be as good as Centenary and SUU with in the next 3-7 years. Travel will be a lot easier, Southern Utah was a b*tch to travel to (play thursday in KC, hop on a plane to Las Vegas drive 3 hours and play at elevation on Saturday)

As far as the MVC I think they are over-rated, they had a few good teams a number of years ago, figured away to make their RPI look good and now have came back to earth.

I think for future expansion (12 works better, plus you always have to look at adding in the never ending conference changing) They have to look at adding teams for Oral Roberts and the Eastern Bloch. UALR and a Illionis, Kentucky, Indiana school would work good.

But honestly though can anybody in the conference object to adding UNO? Omaha has one of the better airports in the midwest, by dropping football they should have the financial backing, geographically it fits perfect and it has baseball which they needed to add a school with because of Centenary and SUU both leaving and USD not having.
