Re: Omaha Herald: UNO plans to move DI, will drop football and wrestling

UNO is a great addition IMHO. I see no reason why the Summit can't challenge the MVC and Horizon for superiority. You start adding some schools with familiarity to each other and proximity and you begin to renew rivals and attendence/interest will increase. I have no problem adding former NCC foes as most are more DI type institutions than some of the commuter schools in the Summit and Horizon.

Agree with what Jack fans have posted here. UNO is going to be a good fit. Read the comments at the Omaha World herald site, they are less than complimentary of the Summit schools, the Dakotas included. To answer those doubters let us all work to elevate the Summit beyond the Valley and in the process enable UNO to challenge Creighton. I honestly always wondered why Omahans thought Creighton was a big deal. Creighton is Drake-like. They never supported their city school, UNO. Maybe they will when UNO is beating Creighton on the court.

Trev Alberts gets my vote for "Sports Douchebag" of the year... telling the UNO wrestling coach they're cutting his program just hours after winning a national title.... that's just cold-hearted.

Do you think the Coach would have rather read it for the first time in the paper the next day or heard the news from the AD himself the night before?

holding off a day or two so the athletes could have celebrated their victory would have been the decent thing to do.

I agree, but I'm guessing the newspaper was going to run that story in the Sunday edition regardless of what the AD's feelings were. So you either tell the Coach the night they win the title or you don't tell him and let him read it himself in the paper the next day.

Still, it could have been handled better... and it still makes him look like a douchebag.

                  Disagree here.

Making the decision that he made had to be extremely difficult to do and he made the decision that he thought was best for the university.

Silver lining to UNO Wrestling being axed is there may be some help for the Jacks wrestling available in Omaha now.

Sorry to see the 3 time D-II National Championship team dismissed/laid off within hours of winning the National title, especially since the championship win occurred just down 1-80 in Kearney.

Why was there such a rush to make this announcement?

Oooh...David Herbster(USD associate AD) gets a mention at the end of this article: Probably not the mention he wanted:

Good article and hopefully they're on a path to financial security with these moves, as all of a sudden their problems can be our problems as we're in the same conference down the road.

I've been listening to Omaha radio 1620am today and a lot have calls have came in. They had the AD on, he is getting criticized for calling the wrestlers on Saturday night but he said he didn't have a choice. He wanted to tell them Sunday when they came back but the Omaha World Herald got the story and he didn't want them to find out from the paper. People were criticizing him for not going to the national wrestling tournament but they had a conference tourny hockey game and I guess a lot of boosters were there.

They had their mens basketball coach on, said that if you look at the conference attendance its not bad, said that they should be able to average 3-4K a conference rivalry game by the time they are eligible for the tournament and around 2K for some of the unknowns. Hopes that they will be able to build a new arena in the near future. Said that they just have to continue to grow as a program.

All I know is we haven't even played a game against them (in DI), and UNO is already to me what IPFW is to Filbert.

I have no clue why, but they just are.

And, as it was in the NCC, the bulk of those attending conference rivalry games will be from the visiting schools. What killed their revenue was the loss of visiting fans from SDSU, USD, Augie and Morningside. Heck, it came out last year that under the previous AD, as many as 90% of the tickets for those attending basketball games were freebies. Trev Alberts was pleased that they had cut that to around 60% for the 2009 season. Basically, the only people buying tickets were us suckers supporting the visiting team. They better hope that their hockey program stays strong.
