Re: Omaha Herald: UNO plans to move DI, will drop football and wrestling

UNO in the Summit may take a while to sink into my brain. It makes good sense for travel ... hope they can raise the level of play quickly in some of their sports where they've lagged. (They've been very good in a few but one of its stars, wrestling, is on the cutting block.)

Here are the current sports offered by UNO:
Women: Basketball; Cross Country; Golf; Soccer; Softball; Swimming & Diving; Tennis; Track and Field; and Volleyball.
Men: Baseball; Basketball; Football; Hockey; Tennis; and Wrestling/

UNO has been known to have Title IX problems because there are so many men's scholarships but the school's student population has a significantly higher percentage of females. Cutting away 36 scholarships from football and whatever they had for wrestling fixes a lot of problems.

Does the Summit League mandate a school offer a certain number of sports?

Just watched the entire press conference and questions fielded by AD Trev Alberts and the Chancelor of the University. They did a nice job of laying out the reasons why they are taking this step and answering some tough questions.

In the Argus Sports Web interview with Douple from the Summit tourney he had mentioned that they were getting interest from a Minnesota school when the topic of acquiring teams came up.

I'm all for adding UNO but am more skeptical about adding St Cloud St or Minnesota St. Maybe adding just one of them, St Cloud St for instance, wouldn't be so bad. Selfishly, at least it would add another game within driving distance for me.

Also, adding St Cloud St would probably hurt NDSU more than SDSU. But in the long run, could this region really support all these new D1 schools?

These are valid points. But, knowing the attitudes in Omaha and in Mankato, I have to believe that the Purple Mavs would rather keep all of their sports and stay in DII.

St. Cloud might be another story. Though I get the feeling St Cloud would be less interested in a move up than Mankato.

I'm fine with one, I think one could give us some more exposure in MN which might not be a bad thing but two will be overkill. That said I am very happy with the current 10 team alignment, 10 is the perfect number for basketball.

I think the performance of NDSU and SDSU against the Goldies gives us plenty of exposure in Minnesota. Taking on M-State really doesn't expand much on that.

Mnnesota State has a much better DI caliber basketball facility and Matt has them in the thick of the DII Regional Tournament again this year. Lots of DI Basketball players in Minnesota to fill the roster of MN State and St Cloud. I think dropping football and going DI in the balance of their sports is the answer. I have also heard some rumbllings of an all Minnesota DII conference that could potentially add St Thomas and St John.

I's just starting to register. UNO has HOCKEY!

Our lifes may never be the same. Forbid they are another insufferable UND. We and the BIZUN are now surrounded!

The move didn't surprise me, but how fast it happened did.

Dropping football didn't surprise me much, I remember hearing something where they were talking about cutting it because it was losing so much money. A football program in Nebraska has to be tough considering how when UNL is playing the state is practically shut down.

As far as for the Summit, I think its a good move, they have baseball which the league needs after SUU and Centenary leave. They fit perfect geographically.

As far as UND? After watching the Big Sky championship I'd say they could be the next team to go to the dance in the Dakotas. But yeah the Big Sky doesn't fit geographically for them at all. taking the volleyball team to Sacramento to play in front of 218 people on a Thursday night will get really old. Also they have a baseball team and the Big Sky doesn't offer it.

Future expansion? Still have to look at UALR, I think they'd fit perfectly, maybe a Kentucky school? Or a Chicago school?

Perhaps the UNO wrestlers can rally enough alumni support to change the AD's position. Didn't Minnesota do that with golf (few years ago, Minnesota announced it was dropping golf; the golf team resisted, raised funds -- I think they endowed the program -- and went on to win the Big 10 and the national titles)?

I can name two who shared your thoughts, especially about a over glorifed NCC and that was Presidents Peggy Miller and President of NDSU Chapman. Both pushed for the NCC to move up to D1 in mass at the last NCC meeting that SDSU and NDSU attended as full fledged members. They were voted down. A big opponent as I recall was UND. With D1 hockey and a National championship in football they thought they had the best of all worlds.

I was myself somewhat cautious of the move, but I trusted Dr Oien, who did the research and was smart enough to bring Carr and Associates to make a complete study. The rest is history.

Getting alum support at UNO is very difficult, because of the nature of the average student who is 30 something and above and has went to UNO to further their career through evening classes or during the day if they work a third or second shift. Most have never taken time to watch a football or basketball game and as a result, they could care less about what the athletic department's plans. I found this out a number of years ago when either USD or SDSU played at UNO on a tuesday night in BB. The parking area around the fieldhouse was packed with cars, and I thought I was going to struggle to find a seat, only to find all the bleachers darn near empty and hardly any crowd. Where were the people who owned those cars? Not in the fieldhouse but in various classrooms around the fieldhouse.

The guy who posed as Mavbots and other handles was one of the few passionate alums at UNO. He was a football alum and so where his brothers father and uncles at UNO. I had talked to him through emails and he was very interested in what was going on with Tim OBrien our great punter from a few years back. Believe it or not he had respect for Tim, since had competed against him on special teams. I think when we went D1, he felt a great deal of jealousy and envy and that what was motivating him to be so nasty on our board. Also being a Omaha native he did not seem to have much respect those institutions housed in small towns like Brookings and Vermillion.

Being the commuter school they are really creates a challange in mobilizing people to change some thing. If courses were to be cut, you might get some support to stop that time of action, but wrestling and football, I doubt it. Its indeed a shame as both sports have excellent coaches and have proven they can win.

Really? Because after painfully watching the Great West Conf. championship I was wondering if either school would possibly make either the Summit or Big Sky tournaments. Awful just awful.
