Isn't there a bar near every house in Milwaukee? Seriously, especially in the older neighborhoods. It's amazing, not to mention one of the really neat things about Milwaukee.

Kansas City's Boulevard Brewing makes my favorite IPA.

Nothing like aromas that include a hint of "fresh mown hay". Be careful when opening one of these bad boys. Contents definitely under pressure. Handle with care or you'll have a mess of abused beer on the floor.

Boulevard is high on my list. Always a good selection.

Personally, my favorite beer Odell makes is the Levity Amber. It is lighter than say Fat Tire but still retains a ton of flavor. Its a good session beer, IMO.

One of my favorites I had recently was Delirium Tremens. Delicious Belgian Pale Ale. It is very strong, for anyone who wants to try it, but its quite incredible. Haven't found it in SF yet, so I need to keep an eye out.

Levity is a fine, clean, summer ale.

Another option, a pilsner style, is New Belgium Blue Paddle.

Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale (best seasonal beer ever) and Big Foot Ale.
Spanish Peak's Black Dog Ale (coolest label)
Rogue's Dead Guy (still the best IMHO) and Skullsplitter Ale
Boulder's Hazed and Infused and Mojo IPA (not as good as the previous listed)
Remembered that you recommended this when I was at Monk's in SF tonight. It was pretty good. Apparently Double Dead Guy takes the cake.

Best beer of the night - by far - the Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca. If you like sour beer, its incredible. It was my first foray into sour beers tonight (tried a couple - wish it was more but I need to study in the morning) and sour beer is amazing. If you have the chance, pick up any Jolly Pumpkin you can get your hands on. A whole new world of beer just opened to me.

If there are any Lambics at your liquor store, those are sour beers too - apparently they are great too.

Re: Best new beer: Grain Belt Nordeast

I had a bottle of Nordeast when back in SD for the Independence Day holiday.

I thought it was weak, watery, unsatisfying, and utterly unimpressive. The only thing even a little bit dark about it was the tint of the liquid--I really, honestly thought Miller Lite had more body than Nordeast. I'd say it was a rather thin but otherwise totally American lager whose wort had been on the boil for a bit longer to make it come out darker.

I'm not sure where the word "stout" came from in connection with this stuff, but Nordeast ain't anywhere near a stout. Or an amber ale. Or any kind of ale, actually.

If I was looking for an amber lager, I'd definitely look elsewhere. If I needed something to slam down real quick after mowing the lawn on a hot August afternoon, Nordeast would stand right there alongside the various other mass-market light beers, IMHO. (Which is probably damning enough, because Nordeast isn't a light beer, is it?)

I'm wondering if I got a bit of a watered-down batch, though--or maybe a batch with a little too much carbonation or something like that. The folks (beer snobs?) posting at beeradvocate.com seemed to like it a bit more than I did . . . not much more, but maybe a little more . . .

Re: Best new beer: Grain Belt Nordeast

Heard from my buddy who manages the liquor store here that Nordeast will quit being distrubuted to South Dakota and will only be available in Minneapoli/St Paul and New Ulm. This is due to its overwhelming popularity of it in the Cities and the inability to keep it on the shelves there.

If you really like Nordeast you might want to stock up.

                          Filbert,
I believe the stout was a little thread drift as at one point some people were talking about Schell's brewing GB, then it went to Schell's Snowstorm/Stout (not a GB beer), but it got a little confusing there for a while. GB Nordeast is not a stout. I haven't had it, so can't comment on it.

Nordeast is a lager, just a little darker than some.

I had a couple over the weekend and still have to give it high marks. I hope the post about it not being distributed in SD isn't true!

Dollar for dollar, it's a great deal. You can get it for $6/6 pack at Sunshine. My palette is woefully poor, and thus my sneaking suspicion is they're slapping Grain Belt labels on Schell's "Deer Beer".

Massively overpriced at $6 a six-pack. Had some over the weekend after brother in law procured a sixer after stopping at three Twin Cities establishments. Wasn't worth the trip.

Great hype, though. But you can't drink hype.
