In High school and University now we have a 24 second shot clock and we have 8 secs to get it over the half court line, because we have gone to F.I.B.A rules.....
I personally think these would be very reasonable rules for SDHSAA to implement, namely the 24 second and 8 sec rules. It seems like stalling tactics went out the window long ago, but it appears they are coming back especially when rated teams are face to face. Its like the coaches and teams are more worried about ratings etc than they are about playing the game. A change is in need here.

A shot clock would not have impacted this game much as each team took 37 shots (that's more than 2 per minute). The low score resulted more from low shooting percentages (32% and 29%) than a stalling effort by either team, although the high powered Madison Bulldogs did stall for a couple minutes in the fourth quarter to get SV out of a box-and-one type defense when they had a 30-27 lead. BTW, Chad White did not walk on water and went 1-7 from the charity stripe and 0-7 from the field.

For those in the Brookings area, I would recommend getting over to Volga to see Ben Miller play at least once this year. His typical stat sheet reads 20+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 3+ blocked shots, and 3+ steals. He will hold all time records at SV for career scoring, rebounding, and blocks when his high school career is done (and SV has had some pretty good players over the years). And, IMHO, he will always have one of the best single shots in State A tournament history for his 3rd quarter over-the-head buzzer beater against Lennox last year. Put Miller on the Dakota Schoolers for the last 2 years, and it would be very, very interesting to see where he is playing college bball.
I think everyone needs to re-read the second sentence of the second paragraph. Now lets get back to the thread- 08-09 recruits!

they've experimented with a 35-second clock in northern Virginia and it has really helped the pace of the games. It hurts poorer teams, though, and so they've had problems getting it instituted.

Umm there was plenty of stalling in this game, by both teams. Sioux Valley held for the final 2 minutes of the first quarter and the final minute of the first. Neither team shot the ball well but plenty of stalling was involved. The Madison coach even said he knew SV was going to do it to keep them from getting out and running and finding an offensive rythm

I guess maybe we have different definitions of stalling. To me, holding the ball for the last shot of a quarter or half (not stalling, and SV does this almost every quarter if the lead is plus or minus 5 points regardless of opponent) is a lot different than starting out the quarter holding the ball (stalling), or holding the ball until a team comes out of a certain defense (also stalling).

Basically, my definition of stalling is holding the ball because the other team is doing something or has a player(s) you have no answer for.

There is also a simple solution for any type of "stalling" regardless of the definition: defense. Guard the ball and cover passing lanes and it becomes virtually impossible to stall.

I get what you are saying about holding for the last shot but to start doing it with 2 minutes left seems a little ridiculous to me

                  Ok lets look back...
This is what Sioux Valley used to do against Clark and Arlington 3-4-5 years ago. Trust me its one of the most frusterating things in the world when you just want to beat the piss out of a team.

                    Re: 2008-09 Recruits

The ultimate slow down game was region 3 final 1973 Sioux Valley vs. Hamlin only Hamlin was the guilty team. I have to admit I hated it then as it was done to us and I still hate it. It is quite different than holding for the last shot of a quarter. I would like to see a 35 to 45 second clock in high school.

Oh yeah, Mitchell loved doing that when they got up even a little bit. It forces the team to play defense but it's so boring as a spectator.

But back to the recruits, the Madison coach, Ricke, had White and Fiegen guard Brooks Knolley for much of the game because of Knolley's size and speed and felt like those were the only two that could handle him. They did a great job as Knolley was held scoreless and didn't get very many good shots off.

It is very frustrating when you are on the wrong end of the strategy...

What was SV's W-L record in those games against Clark and Arlington?

In all seriousness, I can see the reasoning behind wanting a shot clock in all classes, and it is probably a good idea. However, the rules allow flat out stalling or holding for the last shot with 2 minutes left in a period. It is a very interesting strategy when used, and it really gets the crowd into the game. I am glad the College Basketball does have a shot clock, because with the win-at-all-costs atmosphere of college bball, we would probably see aaaalot of stalling.

Albert Einstein once said, "You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else." I would say the Vincent coached teams exemplify this attitude for the most part. He was one of the first high school coaches in the area who used a matchup zone regularly, and it caused fits for a lot of opponents for a few years (coaches yelling from the sidelines, "they're in man" followed by "they're in zone") FWIW, Sioux Valley has won 75% (196-65) of their games since Vincent started coaching in 97, I would guess 4-7 of those wins came because of "stalling".

Back to the topic of the thread, Chad and Tony will be good additions to the team next year.

Edit: I will not write any more off topic posts on this thread.
