Therin lies the point, gateway.... they don't teach such things as "Common Sense" at USD. That's why they'll always be one step behind us.

Perhaps it's no wonder why we are the flagship university in South Dakota. The U had it's heyday but was too busy resting on it's laurels while its "hick cousins" to the north we're busting their butts to make something of themselves.

Hype, dreams and b.s... That's the "U". Why else do you figure they have a failed politician at the helm, while we have had REAL leaders like Briggs, Wagner, Miller, and now Chiccoine?

I love the natural setting of Coughlin and the recent updates have vastly improved the old stadium, but I don't think we are in any position to be taking shots at any other football stadiums including the Dakota Dome until we finish the job at Coughlin. There is a long way to go!

Really?  SDSU's Men's program spent part of our last season in D-II ranked #1 in the national polls.  Was USD ranked #1 last season and I missed it?  For that matter, when was the last time that USD was ranked #1 in the nation in Men's Basketball polls?  :

Did that season end with a 40 point or a 50 point loss for you guys? C'mon, don't give us a ranking from half way through the season. The end of the season showed us what a joke that ranking was.

The Dome is a good place for football, a bad place for basketball. Whoever said that the Dome being a good home field advantage for football was bad for USD is talking out of their a$$, because that's just absurd. If that's the case then I guess Frost Arena sucks because that provides SDSU with a great home court advantage, which apparantly puts them at a disadvantage when they go on the road. : I don't think that is the general consensus on thsi board, only one person listed that as a reason for the Dome sucking.

I will say the one good thing about the Dome for basketball is that it provides a good homecourt advantage for basketball as well. Not for the same reasons as Frost. It's because it is tough to shoot in the Dome when you aren't used to it. There is no background because there is so much space behind the baskets. However, that is no reason to not build a basketball facility. Something like the Barnett Center, Frost Arena, or the Taylor Center in Mankato would be great.

The people who have said that we will stop getting the DI transfers when we move to DI and that we will be hurt by it are right. Some of our better players do come from DI and that pipeline will dry up when we move up. This is a significant concern. It's also a concern that we will have more competition for the low level DI player than SDSU had when they made the move. Our talent level may very well end up going down, not up.

Louie v. Colby is not a good comparison. Colby couldn't carry Louie's jock. Colby had like 3 or 4 other DII players on his team. Most of Louie's teammates couldn't start at other high schools.

Sorry for this post being all over the place, I just tried to address a lot of topics in one post.

            Juice,

You may also recall that we beat that year's D-II National Champion on a neutral court.  Yes the season didn't end the way we wanted, but again that is not the point.  The point that some USD posters are trying to make, is that you are in better shape going into the D-I move then we were.  So show me.

We were ranked #1 in the nation that year and our best win was against the eventual D-II National Champions.  What was your highest ranking of the season?  Who was your best win?  The burden of proof rests with you.  You do have another season in D-II so best of luck and let us know how things turn out for your school, ok?

Now turning to the Dome, it is an ok facility. I have played there and watched games there. The issues that plague the venue are as follows, the sight lines aren’t the best, the chair back seats look and feel like they came out of an old bowling alley, it is too small, and it can not be expanded, finally if one event is being held it interferes with all the other sports.

Say what you want about Coughlin-Alumni but it is larger (meaning we can generate more revenue) and it is expandable (Coughlin-Alumni Cap. 16,000 + -- Dakota Dome Cap. 10,000 max).

Is the Dakota Dome adequate for D-I.  Sure I have seen worse.  Is it ideal? Far from it.  Does it look like a grain bin?  In the words of Jimmy from the Movie Goodfellas .  .  .  "Little bit".   ;D

            Go State!

You make a good point on the seating capacity. I hope that the Dome proves to be too small for our needs. We went through a long stretch there where 10,000 was more than enough, hopefully we don't see that again.
I also like the quote from Goodfellas and you even followed it up with a picture, which made it even better.

I think any smack from a USD fan directed towards our struggles in men's BB at the DI level is a little weak. Your not even in our league right now. If you want to bring up some of the success USD has had at the DII level since we left the NCC I would say your argument is hampered by that fact.

                  Re: USD transfers already beginning

If SDSU was so good during their last year or D2 then why was it that USD beat them twice within a week to end the regular year. I guess that USD team must have been great in comparison. Keep in mind that after SDSU left the best team in basketball for the past couple of years in D2 has been Winona State which is a regional but non conference foe. The best team for the last 3 years in football has been Grand Valley State which is a regional but non conference foe. USD has lost to the eventual national champ in each of those sports. Just because SDSU and NDSU left the NCC doesn't mean the regional became suddenly bad. It didn't. Really SDSU was a non factor in football and NDSU was a non factor in hoops. So in essence only one good program left the NCC in basketball. Two left in football including UNC but they have regressed quite a bit since.

I have heard different things on this but at one time I was led to believe that the far side of the field at the Dakotadome had the capability to expand to equal what the seating is on the Grand Stand side. Basically the same seating on both sides. If that happened I would imagine the seating capacity would go up to about 12 to 14K for football. I am not certain if that is a possibility.

Just keep talking.  You obviously have no idea what your athletic dept. and athletic teams are in for during the next 3 to 4 years, ESPECIALLY your basketball teams.

                        Re: USD transfers already beginning

Sounds like the last couple of replies are a perfect example of the case of a losing argument. Nothing to come back on so why not just complain for the sake of complaining. Many of your own fans will admit that the last teams SDSU had in D2 would beat the current addition of the D1 Jacks. That is coming from your own fans mouths. The current Coyote team is at least as good as the one that beat the Jacks during their last D2 years. That = USD > SDSU in basketball. That is rather obvious just as it is SDSU > USD in womens hoops.
