Speaking of the lean years, that included the men's game following the women and watching the crowd shrink by 500 prior to the men's tipoff. Halftime would see a larger drop of crowd. It is fine to watch the games these days for both teams. Coach Nagy may still stomp his feet from time to time, but now we know that long road to convert to DI is yielding some fruits on an annual basis. We have not seen any walkons recruited to make a practice squad. Preseason kudos to Coach Nagy and the admin for progress and patience through this transition. Now we can hope for a better OOC schedule to come to Frost as another step.

Re: A kinder, gentler Scott Nagy?

All of you are missing the main reason for the 2 DII schools we have on our regular season schedule. SDSU does not WANT to play any D2 schools during the regular season. It's just the way it worked out. Why do u think we were well into Sept before our schedule came out?? You think it was because they were so excited about it that they wanted to keep everyone waiting? No! The schedule was not full until then. They were spending days trying to find other D1 schools to come play us either in Frost or at the pentagon. I know Iowa declined to play us at the pentagon let alone frost. It was also known last year that UNI would not give us a home and home. The schedulers do their best to try to get games for us but not very many schools bite. Thats why the past two years we have seen home and home games against other mid-majors.. (Weber State and Idaho State) they are in the same boat as us, they need home games. Fans are forgetting how rare these OCC home and home series are.

So it comes down to 9/1 and we still have 2 more games to fill on our schedule. We probably could have gone on the road to play other D1 schools, but we as fans and the team also deserve some non-conference home games. So at this point they have no choice to turn to look at some D2 schools. If you look back, Augie had released their entire schedule way back on 8/6/15.. So even if we wanted to play them we couldn't have as their schedule was already full.. So we turn to other D2 schools and try to get a few more games. With how late we were looking this year we should be grateful we got the full 31 games. Even if the last 2 scheduled were Chadron State and Wayne State, two schools with obvious connections.

So for all you saying we are scared to play Augie that just isn't the case. Augie will be a good ball club this year, I'm giving them their credit. It's just that SDSU doesn't go looking for D2 games, they are scheduled as a last resort. It is nothing that we have done wrong its just a common battle that all mid-majors face. Especially mid-major schools that are supposed to have decent years. The goal for all D1 schools is to make the big dance. When lets say an Iowa would put us on their schedule it does nothing for their RPI. It is a game they are supposed to win. So if they win, they get no credit for winning, but if they lose it is considered a "bad loss" and they are that much further away at getting a bid into the big dance. So as long as we continue to get better and until we are consistently getting top 25 votes year in and year out, we will fight this battle every year. It's a no win situation for another school to come play us at frost.

So I guess my point on this thread is that if Augie was still needing a game on 9/1 or around then when we filled our schedule we very well could have scheduled that game, But they WERE NOT. They had a full schedule..

So can we please give this a rest! I would like to go back to talking about Mr. Nice and gentle Nagy. I have high hopes for the bearded wonder this year, and I believe that he does too. This could be a special year if all goes right.

The jump from D2 to D1 is much bigger than any of us expected it to be. Yet Augustana would roll into the Summit and within a year or two be playing for conference titles? Really?

Augustana is a division 2 school. They play in the NSIC. We want Sioux Falls fans (including some of our own alumni) to recognize that SDSU is now D1, WHICH WE ARE. Augustana is an old NCC foe. Playing them does us no good.

This is why the Bison fans sometimes make fun of us. Here we are spending hours talking Augustana because one of their fans came on our site and made some noise. I don't see a lot of "should we play MSU Moorhead" threads on BV? Can we expect a "why don't we play NSU" thread soon if someone from Northern shows up? How about BHSU? Those teams are also D2?

We don't play Augustana. We may never again play Augustana, there is no reason for us to play Augustana. We have moved on and up. They moved on and stayed D2, or considering who left; maybe we can say they moved down. Some deride our playing Mines, last time I checked they are D2; just like Augustana College (University).
You are missing the whole point. If we are going to play four D2 schools than why not play the best in that division which happen to be in the neighborhood. We have a connection because Scott Nagy's son plays for them? Who cares. We are playing them and Chadron because it's an easy tune up and no chance for embarrassment. Augie not so much. They are getting players we have offered. Heck they almost got Wolters. Take your superiority hat off! I would have more interest in seeing Augie, Northern or Mankato than these D2 schools who don't even dominate in their own league!

Just for the record, Augie's schedule still isn't complete. They're short a game now as it is. They just finally released the schedule because it was clear nobody else was going to schedule them. It's a surprisingly similar situation to what SDSU is facing, in fact. I asked one of the Augie athletics administrators why the Vikings only had one regular season non-conference home game this year and I was told it was because nobody would come play them. So, to the point that someone else here already made about SDSU's options, Augie's options were to schedule a bunch of NAIAs or go play in tournaments away from home. Augie chose the latter, but still haven't fully filled the schedule anyway.

Doesn't change the overall intent of your post or anything, but I just thought I'd point that out.

No, I think you are missing the point; or maybe you are making my point. We only play D2 schools to fill out our schedule at the last minute and to get in some lower level "live" practice. If we decide to work out a schedule that allows us to play Augustana we have now lowered ourselves to their level in the minds of many in the Sioux Falls area and greater South Dakota. I know the Argus covers Augie and a lot of SDSU fans in Sioux Falls would like us to play Augie; why I do not know. We aren't going to play them, not now; possibly not ever.

Superiority? Yes, we are superior. We play up a level. If you can't see that I'm not sure I can help you.

Playing up a level doesn't make you superior. Ask Kansas.

Seriously? Someday maybe you will understand that the NCC no longer exists and that Augustana are no longer a peer of ours.

Let me guess, you were against our move up?

No all for it. Just don't think especially in 2015/2016 this coaching staff wants any part of Augie.

Is DWU or School of Mines a peer of ours? How do we look to the media and sioux falls crowd by playing them? My point is if we are going to play these games let's at least challenge the team. Iowa and Minnesota have no problem playing Augie, but because we were former conference mates we are above that?

DWU was national runner-ups in the NAIA national tournament last year. When they played SDSU last year in an exhibition game they had a 3-point shot go in and out that would have tied the game with under a minute to go in the game. They lost by seven I think. I belief the score was 78-71. It was a better game then some of the Division I opponents that came to Frost Arena last year. If you are suggesting that SDSU did not play their best players, you be wrong. Also, anyone who knows basketball would agree that Augustana University would be a quality opponent that would draw a huge crowd. I feel Augustana could have been a Summit League semi-finalist with their team last year and they all return this year. Just for the record, I am SDSU fan, but I am realistic about who we are and respect those who play in a level that is supposedly lower. Just saying.

Why do you keep talking about School of Mines and DWU? These are exhibition games and mean absolutely nothing... I guess I am curious what your confusion is with that? They dont count for anything. The only D2 schools on our official schedule are Chadron and Wayne State

I buy season tickets to guarantee tickets against USD and NDSU plus i enjoy all the D1 games, men and women. i usually give the non D1 tickets away. It is dissappointing to not have better non conference games. More DH would be nice. I think this is my 10th year also for season tickets

Why do you guys keep bringing up the NCC? Nobody here is advocating to reunite the NCC. It's strictly a matter of an opportunity for two local teams who both draw well attendance-wise to play each other in a game. Would the fact that both teams used be rivals make it a little more entertaining for fans? Sure. But not because anyone thinks the NCC should still be around. Mostly because it would be a (possibly) competitive, well-attended game. If SDSU weren't having to schedule multiple regular season D2 games per year, this wouldn't have even come up. It's not a "bring back the NCC" thing. Just a "play a game that's actually worth something for fans and the teams themselves" thing. To that point, plenty of SDSU fans have explained that it's not actually worth something for SDSU, and that's totally fine. But it has nothing to do with people wanting to bring back the NCC as far as I'm concerned.

I hate to be the one to break the news, but those people were right. USD's first year in the Summit League they beat SDSU... They beat UMKC 2 times (WIU, IUPUI, and NDSU couldn't). They also beat IUPUI and IPFW. They lost to WIU by 2, and lost to Southern Utah by two and another time in overtime. 7 points away from winning 8 games. Year one, they competed.

The Augie team of the last two years is arguably better than any DII USD team post the SDSU jump to DI.
