    Re: Conference shifts

Comments on the radio today in Detroit says there will be four super conferences with around 16 to 20 teams in each. The Big East dissolves, Pac 10 to go to 20 teams. Notre Dame to the Big 10 and maybe Pitt and Syracuse? Missouri to the Big Ten with around 16 teams in it. Minor conferences won't be affected. Except for scheduling OOC games with the big boys.

I think the dissolving of the Big East is a given.

Will the ACC pick up the Big East football schools that don't go to the Big Ten?

Will the SEC be content to stay at 12? Will the SEC make a play for Miami, Clemson, South Carolina and Florida State?

There are 66 FBS football schools in the BCS.

        Don't you mean Georgia Tech?

I think there'll be 5 super conferences and 3 dead ones.

        The super conferences
        Big Ten (16)
        PAC-16
        SEC (16)
        ACC (16)
MWC with both Kansas schools, Boise State, Fresno State, & Nevada

        The dead ones:
        Big East
        Big 12
        WAC

Jay Bilas on Mike and Mike this morning says the conference realignment and super conferences is the first step of the schools leaving the NCAA.

Do you think Texas may be inclined to rebuild the Big Twelve around itself? That it may feel big enough to singlehandedly create a power conference?

I think Texas, A & M, Tech, OU, and Okie State will all go to the PAC-10.
Missouri will eventually head for the Big 10 with Notre Dame and 2 Big East schools
KU, K-State will both head for the Mountain West along with 3 from the WAC.
Baylor and/or Iowa State will go to C-USA.

Iowa State could also go to the MAC.

Big 12 as a conference is dead as a door nail.

You don't think they see this as an opportunity to 'seize power' as it were?

That Texas' prez. would rather be in the Pac-x than in a conference that it could dominate year in and year out, and which would own the Texas media market lock, stock, and barrel?

Oh, yeah especially now that USC just got body-slammed by the NCAA for violations.

                    Re: Conference shifts

I think they are all looking at how to create a network similar to the Big 10 network. Pac 10 commish has already moved them down the road on that, and Colorado's big plus was that it would bring the Denver television market into the mix. A Texas dominated conference would not have enough potential subscribers to compete, and so for it to work money wise for Texas, it would have to be given an even better deal than it had in the Big 12. This would make the new conference less stable than the Big 12 was. Texas has the other conferences bidding for it right now, it might not next year, let alone 5 to 10 years down the road.

I wonder what the SEC would think if Texas and OU came knocking on the door and said we are in if you can get 2 ACC schools for the other side of the conference (Miami and FSU, for example). That would be a power conference.

That would be a big kick in the balls for Iowa State. Going from a BCS conference to a POS conference. I think they will stick with the remnants of the Big XII to what ever conference they end up in, most likely the MWC.

If Texas goes Pac-10, I think they're going to demand (and receive) a Big Twelve style revenue distribution, and I think -that- will destabilize the Pac-10 the same as it destabilized the Big Twelve.

If Texas decides to build a Texas-centered Big Twelve, at least they'll keep that toxic revenue package to themselves, instead of infecting the Pac-10 with it--unless the Pac-10 already distributes TV money that way.

I don't think Texas will get a similar revenue distribution system from any other conference.

                            Re: Conference shifts

The conference shifting has been very interesting to follow. Tons of rumors out there as to who is going where, or who is staying put.

One of the things that is effected by all of this, and hasn't been discussed much at all, is recruiting.

                            1. Changing conferences for most schools will obviously change the teams they will play. This means geography comes into play as to how many games family members can get to watch the recruit play.

                            2. Stability. If this is all taken care of in a couple of weeks it may not be an issue. But a recruit could be bothered by the fact they will be playing in the _____conference one year and the _____conference the next.

                            3. I wonder about schools like Kansas State and Iowa State. Kansas State for example, has some decent programs I guess, but it's not a marquee school, (nobody seems to be knocking on their door to get them to join). If they have to move to a non BCS conference just to have a home, then this most certainly will effect their recruiting.

                            4. How does this effect Kansas men's basketball? They are one of the storied programs in college basketball history. If I were them I would be joining another league BCS league today. Not as many McDonald's All-Americans aren't going to want to play for them if they are in a non BCS conference.

                            Any thoughts on this?

It's official -- Boise State is joining the MWC. Good news for us here in Boise. The WAC games here were almost unwatchable with the outcome usually determined before the 4th quarter. I'll definitely be going to games again if we get teams like TCU, Utah, Air Force, and BYU in town.

But what will the future MWC look like? Will the Big 12 implode with the MWC picking up some great castoffs? Or will the MWC elite leave for a new-look Big 12?

And finally, with the WAC looking for new blood, will the Grizzlies finally make the transition to the FBS?

I'm still waiting for Utah to go to the Pac-11. If they're going to invite Colorado, it seems likely that they'd invite Utah, if for no other reason than it gives them the 2.2M people living in the Wasatch Front, and arguably Utah is a better program than Colorado these days.
