Re: DII Women's Basketball National Championship

Gotta admit, just had talked to MD and gave my give a s**t speach, but was sitting around having a couple of cold ones watching NCAA BB and thought I would flip to ESPN2 and see how Udot was doing. Saw they lost, man am I bummed (think I need to work on my sincerity!)

Other trivia about the Dakotas and Northern Kentucky. SDSU beat them in 03 as noted and the prior time Northern Kentucky was in the finals -- and won the title -- was in 2000 when they beat NDSU in overtime. I think the TV announcers have mentioned that game. Now, what they haven't said is USD grad assistant Coach Jaimie Berry (Jackrabbit QB Ryan's sister) was NDSU's lead scorer in the game, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. So, Jaimie's on the bench coaching, getting a little revenge against Northern Kentucky (I hope)!

[I sure don't want to take anything from USD but I agree with other posters. I think SDSU would handle this team pretty easily. USD has nowhere near the weapons SDSU has had for a few years and will continue to have for the foreseeable future. SDSU is the exceptional program in these parts...USD is still a good team but not at SDSU's level.]
We also beat Northern Kentucky in the 2002 Elite 8 in Rochester, MN. Shari Johnson made 1 of 2 FT's with very little time left to lift us 68-67.

I was at that game in Rochester. Great win for the Jacks, couldn't get through the semis though. The experience of that tourney definitely helped us when we returned in 2003.

I wish I could say I didn't have a smirk on my face when 4Life called and said the yotes lost but I just looked in the mirror and thats definitely a smirk. What can I say?

I don't care what anyone (insert, USD fan) says, even the top notch DII teams (USD and NKU) both are not as fast as us or the other top teams we play in DI. Not near as tight defense, the post players are slower, and not as many quality long range shooters (at the end of the game for USD, Jenna Hoffman was the only one throwing them up and she went way cold). We'd still take em' by 20.

I was definitely pulling for USD, but it's sure hard to root for Chad Lavin.

We won't have Chad Lavin to kick around anymore...

Agree with prior posters that the athleticism in that game wasn't impressive. I'd say SDSU is more athletic at every position. Hegge looks like she'll be a pretty good player eventually. She probably needs to get a good bit stronger for D1.

I agree. The only two Summit League teams that usd2 and NKU could compete with are Centenary and SUU.

I'm sure Chad thinks that NKU is the only team in the country better than Tennessee.

I agree. I was pulling for the ladies on the floor but conveniently forgetting who was on the bench. Number two is still something to be proud of. Congratulations to the Coyotes. Thanks for representing our state well.

Re: DII Women's Basketball National Championship

Neat article about NKU's fans making a spur-of-the-moment decision to take a Road Trip:
Brad Bolte watched from afar as the Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team won its quarterfinal and semifinal games in the NCAA Division II tournament earlier this week.

With his beloved Norse set to play South Dakota in today's championship game, Bolte decided to join a handful of other NKU fans and the school's pep band on a chartered bus that left campus Friday morning bound for faraway Kearney, Neb.

"Spur of the moment," Bolte said. "It doesn't get any better than that."
Y'all Jackrabbit fans remember that next year, when SDSU wins the Summit League tournament in Sioux Falls and heads to the Big Dance (men's AND women's) . . .

ROAD TRIP!!!! Make sure your schedules are clear for the NCAA First and Second round games on March 24-29, 2009 (that's the women's dates, by the way).

Collect your nickles and dimes. YOU NEED TO BE THERE when the Rabbits crash the Dance for the very first time!

(Yes, I'm using a lot of exclamation points. Blame the Guinness. )

Re: DII Women's Basketball National Championship

I would have preferred the Coyotes won and I join others in congratulating USD for a fine season.

I went to Northern Kentucky's website to read the winning team's report of the game. "Jackrabbit Nation" and "South Dakota State University" are both mentioned in the opening paragraph, USD and Coyotes are not!
Even so, it's an interesting story angle.

KEARNEY, Neb. - Five years ago to the very day at St. Joseph, Mo., it was the loud, raucous Jackrabbit Nation that helped give South Dakota State University a huge lift in the NCAA Division II national championship game against Northern Kentucky University.
It was on March 29, 2003, that NKU dropped a 65-50 decision to South Dakota State in the NCAA Division II national championship game. Exactly five years later, the Norse again squared off against a team from the rugged North Central Region.
This time, NKU met the University of South Dakota for the NCAA Division II national title on Saturday night. While South Dakota’s crowd provided the same boost its in-state rival received from the Jackrabbit Nation in 2003, the Coyotes’ enthusiastic fans could not help their team claim its first-ever national championship.

The 'Yotes had a hell of a run but it sure doesn't bother me that we won't be hearing a bunch stuff from their fans now!

I hope this gives them some momentum that thier fans can cling to as they go into transition hell. Not smack, just the truth!

                              Congrats on a wonderful season!
