I guess as long as there grant money out there, the bubble is not likely to burst.
There has to be an Ole and Lena joke somewhere in that first sentence... As ole was nearing retirement age, he thought it might be a fun use of his free time if he took some Norwegian studies classes at the local university...

And I get told not to pick on the Dutch. They aren't much. Check the winter Olympic Medal standings, that's my idea of a Norwegian joke, leaving the Nethelands and Good OLD USA in the dust..

Right. There is no way they are looking at D1. The people I know at Augie are very happy with the progress of their athletic programs. I'm thinking they'll name a new AD sometime in April and I would bet D1 experience is not a huge factor in their search.
        Holy nutmeg!

Just curious, but do you think that attitude would change if there was a non-scholarship football conference that was looking for a member?

I think if your going to go non-scholarship in football you might as well drop football.

I thought from the get-go when SDSU and USD went D-I that Augie had a chance to really be a DII power. I still think that way. There women were in the DII elite eight recently. Don't think that would have happened had SDSU or USD still been DII.

Those of the Augie nation who still want to go D1
are probably former throwers of carrots at SDSU games.

I always got a laugh out of the carrot toss. It was such a "polite" attempt at an insult. And so much better than the idiots that would toss rabbits or bring in dead coyotes. And, at least from my view, the vitriol wasn't nearly as bad with Augie. I still think that it would be fun to have them on the schedule as a tune up game instead of DSU or a Mn-State team.

I recall several games at the Elemen Center where AD Gross almost encouraged this carrot throwing behavior and it was costly as TF were called and SDSU seems to have always have 75 to 85 percent FT shooter who went to the FT line and put points on the board while the clock was stopped. Often the margin of victory was equal to those free throws. I recall Steve Emming asking Coach Nagy about this behavior and he said one time, that he felt bad for Perry and the Augie players. Perry Ford was the coach then. It was not a fair way to win a game, but for their fans having an impact on the outcome made it unfair.

Just saw that this was being discussed on here and figured I'd provide a link to the press release from Augie's athletics website to offer more info/details: http://www.goaugie.com/news/2014/2/2...224142037.aspx

The other kind of cool thing (which I also posted over on the USD message board, since they were discussing this as well) is how they'll be redesigning the Arena specifically for Augie (which was one of the expectations/requirements for the Vikes to move into the Arena next season):

Cool indeed, but Why wouldn't they? the only other thing left in the arena is the circus. Stampede: Gone, Skyforce: Gone, Storm: Gone, Summit Tourney: Gone Big concerts: gone. In fact Augie may be saving the arena from being razed as it is likely it could be a loss to keep open in the near future otherwise. I'm glad that Augie is back in the arena and would be all for the return of the Augie Doggie as well!

That looks extremely nice. I never understood why people didn't think the arena was nice, its just too small for a city of our size. I think it was a good decision by Augie's decision makers.

I think the Arena still has many years of life, and to demolish it would be a mistake. A great venue for Augustana to grow in its following. Some day it could become D1

I think one of the biggest things is that, unless I'm mistaken, every chair will have a seat back. If any of you SDSU fans have been to Augie games at the Elmen Center, you might've noticed two things: 1) There are no seat backs except for the row of chairs along the sideline and the small, two-row groups on either baseline, and 2) there are LOTS of senior citizen Augie fans. Not surprisingly, most of those older Augie fans would like chair backs, and those older fans should/will be substantially more comfortable at the Arena.

Also, it's kind of hard to see in the image, but they'll actually be curtaining off the upper seating sections of the Arena, so it won't feel quite as empty as it might have felt without the curtain.

There are several other positives about the move (most of which are outlined in the GoAugie.com story I linked to), but I'm definitely excited about the Vikes playing in something a little nicer than a glorified high school gym.

That place is a complete dump. It can definitely be used for something though. Might as well be Augie basketball.

A dump compared to what? Compared to their existing facility or USF's, a slightly spiffed up Arena is a palace.

Consider this: Augustana will have a larger seating capacity than SDSU.

Arena vs Dakota Dome, I take the Arena any day of the week and twice on Sunday. For a walk up GA ticket, I would probably rather watch a game in the Arena than Frost. Better sight lines, chairbacks, more concessions, more bathrooms, better parking, etc.

If Augie can consistently win 20 games, they will likely average around 3000 per game.

I wonder what this does to the Augie/USF games. They were being played in the arena. I wonder if USF will want to have their home Augie game in the Stewart Center? I would not be surprised to see them line up some home games in the Pentagon in the near future.

Speaking of parking, WTF were the Pentagon people thinking??? There is not good place to drop people near the door, and you have to walk all the way around the building to get inside or back to your car. I'm not going to another game out there with my family when its below freezing. Pretty big oversight, IMO.
