Re: Augustana Basketball to move to the SF Arena

I just ran a calculation at the Augie website and the cost I came up with was for room and board and tuition is $38,900. Holy Nut Meg.
So some really rich alums are going to have to come forward with and empty their deep pockets to make it a D1 school.

Yes went to their calculator, but I told the calculator I had $30,000 in cash. Maybe that lowered my number. I really don't know what I am doing. Unfortunately I did not find their link. Its hard to believe that the costs have doubled in 10 years. Thanks UWM and SDSU.

The website you linked is for Augustana College in Illinois.

Augustana in Sioux Falls is closer to 36,000 total. Still expensive..

Anybody know what tuition at SDSU was 10 years ago compared to today?

I remember hearing about houses that doubled in value over a 10 year period... the education bubble will eventually burst too, and the fallout could be worse than the housing crisis. There is no defaulting on student loans.

Cost at SDSU for the 2003-2004 academic year was approximately $7500 for a SD resident. That price includes tuition/fees for 30 credits and room/board. Similar cost for 2013-2014 is $13,560.

The tuition costs on the web site are misleading. Everyone, I repeat, everyone qualifies for at least some private grant money at Augie (money that doesnt have to be paid back). There are a number of scholarships available and it's all based on your GPA and SAT scores. You can cut the yearly tution by thousands if you are in the right program and have a solid GPA etc.

The point is someone has to pay the $36,000 per year. Since tuition is so much more, it costs the university a lot more money to fully fund an athletic program like football where you are allotted 63 full scholarships compared to somewhere in the 30's in DII. An increase of 30 scholarships is over $1,000,000 per year that the university has to come up with. That's not even counting the increased costs of travel, coaching salaries, etc.

Understood but a good chunk of that $36k comes from private dollars.

NSIC has a cap of 24 scholarships for football.

Worse yet. To be fully funded they would need to add 39 scholarships at a cost of 1.4 million/year.

Unless of course they go non-scholly in football.

This is my understanding. AugieJackfan was alluding to the fact that much of the total costs comes from private money. I suspect he is referring to Pell grants and other kinds of grant money. My question is can these type of grants be applied towards athletic scholarships? If so, then maybe, the money for scholarships may not be that steep. But then whats the point of having an athletic scholarship?

Pell grants are federal grants so I doubt they can be applied towards athletic scholarships. The private grant money might be. It depends on how the donor wants their grant money handled. If the athlete meets the required GPA, SAT etc and the donor is okay they are an athlete than they will get as much private grant money as a non-athlete.

About ten years ago, I was looking toward retirement and was interested in the Norwegian studies offered by Augie. A number that I was given then for a full load at Augie was $18,000. That's what got me going and the numbers that have been shown in this thread suggests that full tuition and fees have doubled. I guess as long as there grant money out there, the bubble is not likely to burst.
