  • Augustana Basketball to move to the SF Arena

The Vikings are moving out of the Elmen Center and moving into the Arena. They have a 5 year contract with an option to renew for another 5 years in 2020. So I guess all of the Summit League teams will be playing on Augustana's home-court in a couple weeks. What other D1 conference tournaments are hosted at a D2 schools basketball arena?

Let's see if I understand your reasoning: high school playoff games have been held at Frost. Does that mean SDSU home basketball games are played in high school gym?

Nah. Frost Arena is the home of the D1 Jackrabbits. Sometimes the Jackrabbit administration allows other games or tourneys to be played in Frost?

I haven't paid that much attention, but what gave rise to the Elmen Center, was that Augustana wanted a home court advantage with a smaller court, and now AD Gross is complaining about his team having to run down long halls and through crowds to get to the playing floor. It sounds like they really screwed up when they designed the Elmen center. Good luck to Augie in the SF Arena.
Allowing D2 and HS teams to play is revenue that will be needed to keep the SF Arena from becoming a dust bowl, after all their current renters leave. No big deal in having a D2 school play in the same place. Upkeep costs got to be paid.

Not to mention that next year the Arena doesn't host a D-I conference tournament.

Recall that the Summit League tournament moves to the Sanford Events Center next door, so the issue doesn't even arise in the first place.

I am confused by your logic as it pertains to this announcement. Augie's current home court is the Elmen Center on campus. The Summit League tournament is in its last year at the Sioux Falls arena and will be moving to the Denny Sanford Premier Center in 2014. The "vacated" Sioux Falls arena will be used for a variety of events including playing host for Augustana home basketball games. Seems very reasonable to me and probably generates some additional income for the events center coffers.

Conspiracy: This is the first step in Augustana becoming a DI member of the Summit League.

            Discuss.

I also read, I think...that this was for double headers. When the Augie Men and Women play double headers they will play in the arena. When it's not a DH, they would stay in the Elmen Center?

That was how I took it.

I know you are joking, but on a serious note, Bill Gross is headed towards retirement. Gross could not see a feasible path to D1, and they choose the D2 path, which has worked. Who will be his replacement, and will that replacement re-visit the D1 option? I don't have any answers, but I see the revisit as an option that might be pursued. Or maybe staying put will be their path into the future.

I listened to Terry Vandrovec's podcast with Argus Augie beat writer Matt Zimmer from a few weeks ago, and that was his line of thinking. Zimmer indicated there's still an Augie faction -- be it boosters, administrators, others -- who thought they should have gone DI in the first place and still believe they should. He thinks that may be why Gross decided to retire at this point in time, with Gross' reasoning being, if you want to go DI, have at it, but I'm too old for this. Zimmer agreed that the Augie hire to replace Gross will indicate what their desires are regarding DI.

You are right, I'm mostly joking.

                      However:

IF Augustana wanted to join the Summit, what practical steps would they take to show Douple that they are serious and should be considered?

Personally, I would love Augie in the Summit. Their football program is a bit of a problem though (if only the Pioneer had room, would be a perfect fit for their team).

I could see Augie going D1 to spite USF and further their superiority complex over them.

The answer to question one, would be " Show me the Money" . They would have show that they have the resources to be competitive, and that might be a problem. There are Augie alums with deep pockets, but maybe not for athletics. Douple does seem to have special place in his heart for the Dakotas, and might be willing to take a chance at some point in time. With the private schools who are tuition driven, that is their operations are tied to incoming tuition makes it hard to come up with outlays for athletics. There are tons of Roman Catholic affliated instuititons that are at the D1 level that Augie could study as models. Right now there just isn't any extra resources for Augie to showcase. The Methodist affliated school who left D1 and the SL, would be a fine example to study for what went wrong and what went right. Their name I can recall off hand. (A senior moment)

Centenary is the school you are thinking of. Oral Roberts is also religiously affiliated.

Yes Centenary that is who I was thinking of. I understand, ORU athletics is almost a separate organization from the institution. The institution has other tasks to fulfill besides academics and that makes ORU very unique. In other words, they are out to save our souls as I understand that. Augustana on the other hand does that too, but in a more subtle manner.
