I am hearing the trickle down effect will likely continue for the Summit. Discussions are that Oakland is interested in the Horizon League. With the departure of Butler from the Horizon Oakland would be a prime candidate to fill that spot in the Horizon. That would be sad. ORU has already lowered the recognition for the Summit and if Oakland left that would again hurt the Summit in rankings. I am hoping we hear discussions about additions to the Summit soon.

We already have seen the trickle down effect in the Summit. Southland Conference opened up due to Tx St, UTSA, UTA jumping to WAC, and now headed elsewhere, hence ORU's move out of the Summit.

I doubt it will ever happen in all sports but this is basically what has happened for football.

In the other sports the bigger schools need the smaller schools, the smaller schools fill their home schedules and make the basketball tournament what it is(extremely profitable). Plus they need the NCAA to run everything, otherwise they'd have to create and pay for some new organization to run everything. Also I don't think the presidents at all the BCS schools want to deal with all the negatives a split would create.

I was not suggesting a split like FBS/FCS. Instead, I expect that they will attempt to form a new tourney or change the current tourney so it includes a required number of BCS teams or something similar to that. Example, if you are a member of a BCS conference and you have a .500 or better in conference and overall record and an RPI above 150 you are automatically in the NCAA tourney. Will they eliminate the autobid? I don't think they can get away with that but I can see them expanding the "first round" to 16 "play in" games for autobid winners. I don't think it will go as far as a "BCS basketball" tourney but it could.

Very legitimate concerns and a valid point for sure. I listen and read way too much about this issue and what concerns me more is the continued discussion between major conferences about scheduling alliances, neutral site games, expanded conferences with home and home contests accounting for 24-30 games per year. You don't need many more games to fill out your schedule in that scenario. I think there is more than a small chance that the Summit league and a whole bunch of other conferences will be DI only by name and by the rules they must follow. If that happens you might, I only say might, see a reorganization of those conferences into a different division. I'm not trying to create paranoia, just thinking out loud.

I think the domino that launches the super-conference era in college football is Notre Dame reaching the conclusion that it must seek Big Ten membership in order to remain relevant as a major college football program. B1G would then likely seek to add three more schools to reach 16, the SEC and Big 12 will plunder the other major conferences to each reach 16 and the PAC-12 will likely have to make some ugly decisions in order to get to 16.

And, yes, college football may end up having a eight-team playoff:

Round One: B1G, PAC, Big 12, and ACC title games
Round Two: Rose Bowl and new Big 12 - SEC bowl
Championship Game one week later (essentially same timing as BCS title game now)

Expect the BIG, SEC, Big 10-12 and PAC 12 to form a 4 team playoff for Nat Champ. Expect that to leave all other FBS schools out in the cold. Expect the minor bowls to collapse and the remaining FBS schools to form a separate division with a playoff not dissimilar to the FCS playoff. SDSU needs to get in position in the next 5 - 10 years to jump up to that group or they will fall back into a DII situation.

Expect the BIG, SEC, Big 10-12 and PAC 12 to form a 4 team playoff for Nat Champ.

It will be the easiest way to determine a champion. No need to bother with polls or selection committees.

Expect that to leave all other FBS schools out in the cold.

The Big East and ACC schools who can't get into the Big Four will be the biggest losers. The Big Four (with the exception of the PAC due to its geography) are going to have a lot of schools to choose from if/when they all expand to 16.

I would not be surprised if the lower FBS and upper FCS schools come together and form a playoff division with a 60-63 scholarship requirement. Any other D1 schools with football will be in a third division, likely with a cap of 36 scholarships with D2 having 24-30 max scholarships. As for the minor bowls, many of them will find a way to survive due to ESPN's never-ending demand for programming.
