The MWC has made an official statement that Boise State doesn't get to bring its non-football programs in the conference. I'm in the minority here in Boise, but I believe the move to the Big East for football was short-sighted. BSU lost a premier conference for its non-football programs and they're scrambling to find a home. Now the WAC is imploding and no conference that seeks any kind of stability would want Boise State basketball, etc. At most, BSU will "park" its basketball programs, etc. until something better comes along.

But hey, they're playing football in the Big East . . .

I agree Crash, what a stupid decision. Makes you proud we have Chicoine and Abbott as our leaders, doesn't it?

Money will do strange things to otherwise good judgement. BSU has had the big time football on its mind for awhile. To think they were once a beatable team in the Big Sky Conference. I found this about the Big East Football and do not know if this is current.

This is current as it was reported on ESPN just this week. Conference shuffling is a mess and it seems it will get messier before it calms down. The Summit and other similar mid-major conferences will see the trickle down effect eventually.

Yeah just like we got in Reaganomics., my political colors are showing, but in a more serious vain, there are winners and losers, and I think BSU is one of the losers in the long run. They are backing themselves in a corner for other sports. I do concede that things would be looking better had they not lost to TCU last season.

We already have seen the trickle down effect in the Summit. Southland Conference opened up due to Tx St, UTSA, UTA jumping to WAC, and now headed elsewhere, hence ORU's move out of the Summit.

I tend to think the jury is still out on the departure of ORU, MBB WBB and Baseball will miss this worthy opponent, but other wise they seemed to be so-so in other sports. The geography seemed to be a motivating factor in this move. This money thing is going to run its course and some one who invested heavily in facilities is going to come up short and might end up storing grain in these places. I am just rambling with fear today.

Jay Bilas (along with many others) speaks about "streamlining" DI basketball in his blog this week. There is a lot of thinking going on about reducing the number of teams currently called DI for basketball. I've spoken about it on other threads and I'm pretty certain they'll be a day when the major conferences split away and form there own post-season tourney. I don't know for sure where that will leave the rest of us. Its going to be different for sure and I think the time is sooner than later.

Food for thought, does Boise State Football = University of North Dakota Hockey?

To this unenlightened observer, both athletic departments seem to be willing to throw most sports under the bus for the sake of their nationally recognized money maker.

well like the saying go, you dance with the girl who brought ya, or ride the horse that took you or something to that effect. If that is where the money is and where more money can come from, it might be their best option to put all the proverbial eggs in one basket for the sake of the others.

Could we see some top tier athletic programs simply split off from NCAA? Form their own association and in essence, take the money and run?

IMO its not a matter of if it's a matter of when. There will be BCS, NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NCAA DIII in college sports

I doubt it will ever happen in all sports but this is basically what has happened for football.

In the other sports the bigger schools need the smaller schools, the smaller schools fill their home schedules and make the basketball tournament what it is(extremely profitable). Plus they need the NCAA to run everything, otherwise they'd have to create and pay for some new organization to run everything. Also I don't think the presidents at all the BCS schools want to deal with all the negatives a split would create.

You are spot on with the scheduling in basketball. The BCS schools need all the little guys to fill their schedule. What on earth would the BCS schools do if they could only play themselves. 20 wins would be MUCH harder to come by.
