Conference shuffling continues

Pacific U returns to the West Cost Conference, leaving the Big West. Pacific had been in the WCC 20 years ago. The WCC now has 10 teams -- Pacific, Gonzaga, BYU, Pepperdine, San Francisco, Santa Clara, St. Mary's, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, and Portland. Schools in that conference are as small as 3670 (U of Portland) and as large as 33,000 (BYU). Most members have belonged to the conference for several decades.

Wow. The poor WAC is a train wreck. I hope the writers' speculation about Boise State joining the Summit is just that: speculation. Big Sky looks like the best option from a travel point of view. I don't like the idea of the Summit stretching its western boundary that far.

Regardless what happens with Boise the Summit needs to be talking to Denver. That said I wouldn't be against adding Boise, Idaho and Denver if given the chance. I'll take that over adding a DII program or trash like Chicago State.

I would agree, but what happens to Boise State Football. What conference will they be in? I thought I read the Big East, but that does not make sense either.

Yes, Boise State's football program will play in the Big East - think $$$$ - that is why the rest of their sports will be moving back to the WAC - and may be looking for a new home. My guess is that the WAC will survive without football by adding say a Cal State Bakersfield, Utah Valley, maybe Texas Pan Am, etc. The schools that are really in a pickle are New Mexico State and Idaho. Where do they take the FBS football programs?

Yes, Boise State's football program will play in the Big East - think $$$$ - that is why the rest of their sports will be moving back to the WAC - and may be looking for a new home. My guess is that the WAC will survive without football by adding say a Cal State Bakersfield, Utah Valley, maybe Texas Pan Am, etc. The schools that are really in a pickle are New Mexico State and Idaho. Where do they take the FBS football programs?

Looks like New Mexico State and Idaho are headed back to BCS. New Mexico State has had problems beating a good BCS school and Idaho appears to have real budget problems.

Meant to say back to FCS? Those teams would need a PAC-12 invite, or a BIG 12 invite to go to BCS. Given that both FB teams usually anchor the Bottom 10 rolls, a BCS invite is a LONG WAYS away. They'd both be better served being FCS teams (as would Tx ST, UTSA)

Maybe the WAC takes up the Great West BB schools?

You got it! FCS is what I meant. A $300,000 saving using the cost of full ride of 15k times 20 would no doubt be a consideration in making a move. A full ride might be more at both schools so the savings might be more. There is some advantage to going back to FCS on the surface, but no doubt more issues involved.

Butler officially to the A10....it's only a matter of time until they start targeting Summit schools...Douple needs to put the full court press on Denver.

I read today that Old Dominion (ODU) is moving FB up to FBS level (just started FB in 2009) and leaving the CAA for Conference USA in all sports.

As discussed previously both Georgia Southern and Appy St. are in the early stages of transitioning to FBS as well.

It would be foolish for SDSU not to have someone exploring the possibility of making the FBS move as well. Any stadium expansion must be able to satisfy expectations at the FBS level. If you aren't looking ahead others are passing you by.

Butler officially to A10 today, MVC is eying Horizon teams and the Horizon is looking hard at several conferences they can scavenge from. Interesting times.

Yeah, I'm starting to get a bit concerned with all the movement, the Horizon could do some serious damage to the Summit.

I think those teams are looking at ConfUSA or another move-up. Not sure they would make a move down to the Summit (they consider it a move down I assure you). It would be a lateral move and I'm not sure it offers any more stability than staying put.
