Re: ND legislature and Sioux name

Don't worry...if UND has to retire the name, they've selected the replacement: the Fightin' Charlie Sheens.

This article is from earlier in the month. I hadn't seen it posted anywhere. I caught the link from BV.

It seems as if the Big Sky may not be too happy. Fullerton was pretty blunt about how he feels. The comment about the BS school President's monitoring the legislative process and that they would "just as soon have it go away" would make me nervous if I were in Grand Forks. Of course, if your a Sue fan and their new conference rejects them, or tells them to change the name before entering conference play that would simply mean it is Douple's fault.

Another valid point brought up in this article, UND hasn't completed it's 5-year transition period. I know that is very obvious but at the end of that process the NCAA still has to give the final seal of approval of making UND a fully-fledged D-I program.

Would be a stretch for the NCAA to tell UND "how about you remain a transitional school until you retire your logo?" I don't know if that is an option for the NCAA but for how political this issue is, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

The NCAA did it to Presbyterian College this year after the Committee on Athletic Certification found their self-study lacking. The Blue Hose(not making that up) were supposed to be post-season eligible next year, but will now have to wait until 2012-13. Their AD left in the middle of the transition, they had an interim AD(with other duties) for about half a year, and stuff slipped through the cracks. It looks like their MBB team was following the NDSU transition model with a redshirting class that were to be 5th-year seniors for the first year of post-season eligibility. Now that won't happen.

Anyway, there is very recent precedent for the NCAA keeping UND on the very naughty list if they want to. Whether they will is another question altogether.

Yikes...this one could get ugly. Personally, I kind of hope it does. Serves them right and I'm wondering if anything is done about it until it adversely affects the hockey program.

That could be happening soon. Minnesota and Wisconsin are leaving the WCHA in two years to join a Big Ten hockey conference. Minnesota already won't play ND in sports other than hockey - not sure about Wisconsin.

I was not aware of this. What brought on the formation of the Big Ten hockey conference? Is a current member of the Big 10 adding hockey to give them enough teams?

Penn State is adding hockey, so six Big 10 teams will play the sport.

And UND looks up and around at the empty room, says to themselves "where did everybody go?"

                        Latest developments:

A meeting between the NCAA on the one hand, and UND and North Dakota government officials on the other hand, has been cancelled. The NCAA didn't want to participate in a meeting that had the potential to be open to the public and press. LINK.

UND announced it is going to resume selling merchandise with the Fighting Sioux name and the Sioux logo and will sell it at least for the 2011-2012 school year (the school's agreement with the NCAA was to phase out the name and logo by August). LINK.

Boy, they are all kinds of stupid up there. Rather brave (Oh, I shouldn't put it that way - not PC) - they sure have some cahone's.

Is there NAIA hockey? It appears they are pressing buttons that may relegate them to it.

                            Good for the NCAA.

They were walking into a trap.

                            ----

And I have to admire this boob Shaft, who thinks that passing a law will change the NCAA's opinion on the nickname. He sounds like Nigel Tufnel.

"And, so, we decided to pass a law making it the official nickname."

"If the NCAA is opposed to the nickname, how does passing a law make a difference?"

"Well, you know, they have this policy, and so we passed a law because of that policy."

"I know. But how will that change the NCAA's policy?"

                            "But, we passed a law...."

I find all this "Sioux" stuff very funny with the NCAA.

The NCAA says the UND must get rid of the Sioux and not use the logo but....... last week durning the Frozen Four; the NCAA was "SELLING" UND Fighting Sioux stuff on its website with the indian head logo.

                              Open mouth - accept foot.

Pretty sure they won't be next year.
