Isn't fighting the operative word for both Notre Dame and UND, or am I wrong?

As far as Ole Miss? Given what happened on that campus less than 40 years ago, and given the persistent arguments over the Civil War and its legacy - take a look at the controversy right now involving Haley Barbour and the commemoration of Civil War generals with KKK connections - and you can understand the sensitivity of a Rebel mascot. Civilizations and sentiments and norms all evolve but never on an even pace, and often unfairly.

      I'm 1/8 Irish.

As an Irish descendant, I COULD be offended by the use of the Fighting Irish. You could also be of Irish descent and take no offense. Which of us would be right? Which would the NCAA listen to?

That's sort of the whole point. The NCAA has decided to cherry pick, show favorites, or turn a blind eye to some nicknames based on arbitrary rules that are entirely subjective.
The reason the Irish (I'm 3/4ths) do not get upset is because God invented Guiness and in many places it's delivered in tanker trucks.

And if some non-Irish guy tells that joke, he gets punched in the nose.

Of course, we Irish invented civilization.... then we had a couple pints of Guinness and forgot where we put it!

Where I work, if native americans call in, we keep demographic info, so we ask what tribe they belong to and most often they just say Sioux. then we have to ask if they could be more specific. I don't think many care if they call themselves sioux. Most do like to complain about the government, but thats a whole nother topic.

Will be interesting to see what happens.....
ND state senate passed the bill 28-15 today so it goes on to the govenor to sign or veto

Hardly a surprise, I guess they could use some of the oil tax surplus to hire some good lawyers as the NCAA will not be taking this sitting down and will certainly sue, meanwhile those of us in ND who live along township roads do not have money to clear the snow that's still coming everyother day. Instead of worrying about a stupid logo, you would think some road maintence funds would be in order. There are too many UND grads in the legislature.

So would this change anything with the NCAA that its going to fight the state that its approved by law to be the school name? I am interested how this all turns out.

Along the lines of hostile and abusive nicknames, I feel that ND should change from the fightin irish to the Drunken Irish. Its more in line with its heritage. j/k for the Irish out there.

Big Sky is not going to be happy about this development and will wish they had never extended a conference bid to UND.

The whole thing is annoying, but if they are gonna go this far, I hope they win. I think the logo looks cool.
