I don't understand how these can be mutually exclusive. Either you believe coach K teaches or condones this action and is coaching bad basketball, or else you don't believe the second statement is really a 'Duke' thing but rather an individual player thing.

FYI, I don't really chear for or against Duke, I just don't understand this point.

*Edit - da_coach I see you clarified in a latter post that it was a group of players that you thought did the bulk of the whining.

I was 10 years old when a freshman named Michael Jordan and a few other really good players were playing for a guy named Dean Smith. There was no cable TV and there were maybe 10 televised games a year. I loved basketball especially the Hamlin Chargers and the Jackrabbits. We listened to SDSU games on the radio but did not have the means to travel to Brookings to watch more than 1 game a year.

I watched UNC and Dean Smith defeat Georgetown in that game and that was it. Tarheel fan for life. I'm looking at my autographed picture of Dean Smith as I type this. I've been to the Dean Dome, I've spit on the steps of Cameron Indoor, I was accepted to UNC and nearly moved went to school there because of the Tarheels. I then went back and looked at UNC for residency and then again for fellowship. I will always be a Tarheel fan.

Now, nobody really cares about all that but those are just a few of the reasons I cheer for UNC basketball. I really do hate Duke.

Why doesn't it make sense? Because those teams aren't in South Dakota? Or because we don't live there?

I just never understood just picking a team and cheering for them. People do it all the time, but for me personally, I could never actually care about a team like that. If it works for others though, that's great.

Must be tough to not root for any teams other than the Jacks.

It's not that difficult at all.

I stand corrected. To be able to root solely for SDSU and not have affiliations with another sports team, college or professional, is pretty impressive. Well done..

I root for the Twins because when my grandparents babysat me they had Twins games on and I root for the Cowboys because my oldest brother lives outside of Dallas and when I would visit he would buy me Cowboys stuff. I cheer for SDSU and USD as well.

I was 11 when UNC beat Georgetown. I had a friend who had moved to our wonderful state a few years before this, and he had moved from North Carolina, so I cheered for them basically because he was from there. Stuck with them from that point on.

like JackMD said...coverage was MUCH different back then...espn was just in it's infancy and showing "australian rules football" and such...not alot of college hoops at the time.

I was a UNC fan for life at that time. Became a Duke hater...during the Laettner/Hurley years...and discovered what a wonderful rivalry the two schools had...at around the same time.

Those two books I mentioned above are excellent.

I have a niece who attends UNC full time, and is a Senior there.

If the TarHeels ever played the Jackrabbits, I'd be hardcore for the Jacks...but I'll pretty much root for the Heels against everyone else.

Laettner and Hurley and Grant was when I started to love Duke, they were fun to watch. after that I didnt really care for the showboating UNC would later get with stackhouse and wallace.

Started watching Duke during the Gminski/Spanarkle Duke team played Jack "Goose" Givens and Kentucky in the NCAA championship game. Been a fan ever since. I follow SDSU, Duke, and Minnesota in that order. And it doesn't seem strange to me (as it does others) that a person likes a team/school from another state, or a school you didn't attend.

And I liked watching Carolina with Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Jimmy Black, Kenny Smith, Steve Hale (there's a name not brought up often), etc. I started to dislike Carolina duringl the Wallace/Stackhouse era.

I will admit this: EVEN I can't stand when Mike Patrick from ESPN does a Duke game. My goodness he's a homer for them.

One of the most disappointing and misguided teams/eras in UNC history. It never looked like they wanted to play as a team. Don't forget Vince Carter was part of that era as well. I'm still upset by their loss to BC in the 1994 tourney. Wallace and Stackhouse were Freshman. Carter came in 1995-96.

That loss in 1994 started a drought that was ended when UNC won it all in 2005. That day in 1994 will stick in my head forever. Like those games at Frost arena that are never to be mentioned again. Or that one at CAS when it was muddy.

Yeah Carter, I knew there was one more in there. I am not a big fan or Roy williams but I do think he has some really good kids, just like Duke. Its exciting when both teams are ranked and playing well, which is usually most of the time. We all have our reasons for liking and not like certain schools, but something we can all agree on is that USD is the worst of the worst.................................dont worry USD fan its just a joke......................................but seriously how could anyone be a fan of that school.

                              Word.

And the Stackhouse/Wallace years were a low point for me, as well.

However, I didn't mind Vince Carter at UNC. He was pretty darn good. Dean always had him guard the other teams top player...1,2,3, or 4. That was the team with Shammond Williams and Antawn Jamison. They were fun to watch.... Coach Guthridge had them, and took them to two final fours in his 3 years.

I really like Roy, another good read is his book "Hard Work". Much like Coach K, he grew up poor, with basically nothing, and made himself what he has become.

Also, I really think that Duke has good kids, too. That's a reason the book "Blue Bloods" is so good, goes through all the teams, all the eras... how many of the guys almost signed with one team, but then signed with the other.

Like I said, it's more of a "style of play" thing for me. I like Roys and Deans transition offense approach. Roy pushes it a bit more...but he says himself, he's changed exactly One thing in the secondary break that they run. Duke has traditionally been more of a half court team....and known as a defensive team. Coach K learned well from Bobby Knight, and added his own personality to it.

Since I grew up cheering for the Heels, I grew up cheering against Duke.

I love the Rivalry of the two schools. Can you imagine if State and the U were 9 miles apart? crazy.

And I cannot cheer for the U. Those were the most fun games attending as a student. If the U played Duke.... maybe I'd cheer for them... maybe...

If you are a fan of the Duke-North Carolina rivalry, I encourage people to read the books mentioned in previous posts. Very well done. I've had the opportunity to spend some time in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. The lines are definitely noticeable where the Duke area ends and North Carolina area begins. I'm talking about the people, the shops, billboards, everything. I went to a Durham Bulls baseball game and it happened to be college night where NC, NC State, and Duke students were there. It was nuts!
