    Re: Paying for On-line Argus

What's killing newspapers isn't so much linking and fair-use of their articles, it's things like Craigslist and other competitors for their ad revenue which, combined with the explosion in alternate news sources, are pretty much eating the lunches of almost every traditional paper-and-presses newspaper.

(And if you think about it, newspapers would, or should WANT people to link to their articles . . . clicks on links--eyeballs on ads--are what advertisers actually pay for. The problem being that the newspapers can't generate enough advertiser revenue to keep their operations above water, and so they have to start looking at online-reader/subscriber-pay models. And as JJ notes, the big-company-profit-off-the-top problem doesn't help at all.)

      Re: Paying for On-line Argus

I guess the main reason I buy the argus is for the Adds on sunday more then the actual content of the paper. I read through the sections but getting the ads when I want them is a big part of purchasing paper copies. I guess if they had just a sports package where you paid for only the survice you want, I would pay a few bucks amonth to make sure I get Terrys stuff. paying over $100 dollars for something that was free, for now I dont see that happening for me. I appreciate Terrys coverage but I guess me reading the online paper with the pop up ads and such wasnt enough.

        Re: Paying for On-line Argus

I broke down and bought the 9 buck job, and what a lesson in new technology. I thought by digital you got the web appearence and could not figure out how to log on. The website kept telling me they had never heard of me or my account. It also told me over and over that I had 5 articles left. I called the customer service, which is not run out of Sioux Falls. I got a "howdy from the south somewhere voice". She was helpful though. Luckily I got a Nook for Christmas and am learning how to navigate that. I suppose after a spell, the paper will work but not so sure right now.

The sunday paper runs about $1.50 in stores these days right? Thats $6 a month. The argus has an option to get the Thursday, Sunday papers delivered to your door for $11 and you get online content included. Se emed like a fair deal to me to keep reading Terry's coverage of SDSU (which you get nothing close to at KELO or KSFY). Plus Zimmer does a pretty nice job with his online content also.

Actually, the Sunday paper is $2.00 now. So basically if you buy four Sunday papers a month, you basically spend about as much as it would cost for a digital subscription.

Anybody know if there will be public WiFi access at the arena during the tourney? I would think they could sell some access and make a little money but I know almost nothing about the cost to provide it.

I think they do...I don't know how strong it is, though.

BTW, due to work commitments (rescheduled district basketball game), I'm not going to be able to make the Saturday games. But I WILL be there for Monday!

                  Re: Paying for On-line Argus

I have to wonder whether any local newspaper can go online and make a profit when they are competing directly with USA Today, Fox News, CNN and the local network affiliates. There are so many potential outlets to advertise on that the advertising rates become depressed.

Perhaps the Argus should look at a more local niche? I'm not in media but, wasn't the original of focus of newpapers local, the where, what and who of the community? Seems to me that if the Argus became a online go to source for everything local (much like they've become for SDSU Athletics) that exclusivity could lead to increased rates for advertising. Perhaps it would be best if Gannet divested to a local ownership.

Interesting read. The writer has a some good points. The web page layout though is weak and finding the first part of the article is not intuititive.
