Re: Events Center Predictions/No commentary/Just predictions
I dont disagree at all with what you have said in this post. I wish I could find a copy of the Collegian from 1965, where on the front page a story was printed about two faculty members leaving SDSU for better places. The reason I suppose I saved this copy was that I failed Intoduction to Literature taught by a professor Henry Hinck, who was leaving for greener pastures at Drake University in Des Moines. Professor Hinck not a South Dakota native was tired of the "stuck in the mud" attitude in general that prevailed throughout the state. So this mentality of not fully funding higher ed goes way way back in time.
At the time, I did not find fault with him as often the professors in social science discplines would often pose the question" How many of you plan to make your future in SD?" A few hands would go up followed by the other choice of going out of state in which the majority of hands including mine would go up. This anti-intellectualism is a very old and seldom dealt with problem.
You mention the musical collection. I believe you are referring to the USD campus and the collection of Arne B. Larson who in my day was band director at Brookings High School. He is the only band director who played the opponents fight song after playing the Golden Spur, the BHS song. He respected people and how USD got this collection is an untold story that I would love to hear. Larson spent his entire working career at BHS. SDSU would be a natural for a collection like Larsons, but USD got it and made Arne B, the band director for a few years before he finally retired. Maybe it was a better fit at the time, but son Andre has added to his father's collection and no doubt needs more room.
The other needs are real without a doubt. The EC center vote as stated by others and myself is a big surprise. With a 41 percent turnout, it makes one wonder how the 59 percent who stayed home would have voted on this issue. We will never know. I think the second penny for higher education is a greater need and hopefully it will be on the ballot in 2012.
