Do I need to go on? This isn't just about the Events Center, this is about a timorous mindset that persistently refuses to take advantage of opportunities.

Heck, look at SDSU. Look at how long it took to go D-1, and look at the attendant hand-wringing, the second-guessing, the panic of the BoR, the strings attached, the chicken-littling from every corner of the state, and over what? Nothing more than a move that had been obvious for 20 years at least.
I dont disagree at all with what you have said in this post. I wish I could find a copy of the Collegian from 1965, where on the front page a story was printed about two faculty members leaving SDSU for better places. The reason I suppose I saved this copy was that I failed Intoduction to Literature taught by a professor Henry Hinck, who was leaving for greener pastures at Drake University in Des Moines. Professor Hinck not a South Dakota native was tired of the "stuck in the mud" attitude in general that prevailed throughout the state. So this mentality of not fully funding higher ed goes way way back in time.

At the time, I did not find fault with him as often the professors in social science discplines would often pose the question" How many of you plan to make your future in SD?" A few hands would go up followed by the other choice of going out of state in which the majority of hands including mine would go up. This anti-intellectualism is a very old and seldom dealt with problem.

You mention the musical collection. I believe you are referring to the USD campus and the collection of Arne B. Larson who in my day was band director at Brookings High School. He is the only band director who played the opponents fight song after playing the Golden Spur, the BHS song. He respected people and how USD got this collection is an untold story that I would love to hear. Larson spent his entire working career at BHS. SDSU would be a natural for a collection like Larsons, but USD got it and made Arne B, the band director for a few years before he finally retired. Maybe it was a better fit at the time, but son Andre has added to his father's collection and no doubt needs more room.

The other needs are real without a doubt. The EC center vote as stated by others and myself is a big surprise. With a 41 percent turnout, it makes one wonder how the 59 percent who stayed home would have voted on this issue. We will never know. I think the second penny for higher education is a greater need and hopefully it will be on the ballot in 2012.

I had mixed feelings on the issue.

Part of me would've liked to have seen it downtown, the other part of me says it makes sense to build it where the convention center is.

Honestly, I've been to 4 events at the arena in my lifetime, a concert years ago, 2 summit tournaments and blue man group a few years ago. Ultimately, "atmosphere" around the arena doesn't matter to me and I could care less where it is, and I'm just glad it's going to get built.

I'm part of the 59% that stayed home, but would have voted yes. I assumed it was going to fail and I didn't feel that strongly about that I wanted to make my voice heard. If the vote were for a downtown location, I definitely would have voted because I felt strongly that that would have been a better location for the goals

With that being said, I would certainly take the time to vote for a second penny for higher education.

An excellent candidate for a replacement State Slogan for South Dakota, actually.

Personally, I'm philosophically opposed to spending tax money on sports arenas--and--generally on government-provided services unrelated to keeping public order and ensuring basic rights (heck, I voted against a 1/8 cent sales tax increase here in Jackson County, MO for the Kansas City Zoo--but I'm a member of Friends Of The Zoo), but the SF Arena is borderline appalling compared to a lot of other venues. And, to paraphrase Rumsfeld, you live in the society you have, not the society you wish to have. I would much rather have seen it be privately funded, but Sioux Falls as a community did need to do something about the Arena.

The contractor at risk the city has already hired, Martinson I believe is the name, has a good track record of hiring local contractors to complete their projects. In the city's presentation (not promotion ) they were giving they had Martinson's recent venues they were the general contractor for and their percentages of local contractors and materials used on these venues and something like 75% was the lowest they had used, with most in the 80's.

I don't think the corporate sponsorship is going to be an issue. It's just a matter of getting a consistent amount of users in it to keep it in the black.

I believe it will be a very nice building. But as a father who has a daughter who has been to the current arena and Frost with her, put some family restrooms in it. Men's restrooms are gross.

Because of the lack of parking at the current arena site the next thing will be a proposal to tear down the baseball stadium so Huether can throw a bone at downtown. I think he wanted to throw that out during the campaign, but decided to wait until he had the new event center under his belt. With this victory Huether will feel empowered to do anything he wants without much opposition.

I think the success of this election will definitely give him momentum to carry out other plans he has in store, whether it is moving the baseball field or whatever.

Now, the downtown businesses need to band together and form a plan to have shuttle services to get me out of that wasteland after events and back to downtown.

Bingo, Otherwise I will probably just drive home after sitting in the parking lot for 20 minutes trying to get out.

So we can expect to see justin Beiber and pheasants forever to be booked soon? I mean those are things they said we could get now right.

I'm all for it. I would go to a pheasants game downtown. I've never been to one yet. I went to the Summit tourney. Outdoors in the summer Downtown, going to a baseball game. That I can agree with.

Spending over ten million to relocate a team that draws a couple hundred a game. Can you agree with that?

My experiences getting in and out of the Arena haven't been that bad - that includes Saturday and Sunday Summit tournament sessions combined with the Home Show, and a sold-out concert. And honestly, any venue that size is not going to have parking that will allow you to get out in 5 minutes or less, regardless of the location.

Because I don't feel the city should have to pay 100% for this thing. Its in the wrong location and paid the wrong way. The city could have easily put this downtown where it would help spur more economic growth. there is no garuntee that there will be any development around the current site which is sad. Sioux Falls will lose potenital tax revenue because they couldnt figure it out. The point of the city providing an EC is to spur economic growth, not dabble in the concert and entertainment industry. If they would have developed a plan that would have truly benefited the city I would have been ok with it. A lot of people who were against it downtown said that we are not like other cities so we dont need one downtown, well by voting yes they have done a good job at keeping us another 50 years away from moving and progressing forward as a community. Maybe not all but I feel people who voted for the current site did not take into factors except for their own wants, and not what is the best for the city. There was no plan for the current arena to change or remodel. Most likely the arena and new EC will split events because it will be tought to book more then 1 at a time there because there is limited parking. A downtown site would have allowed conventions at one site and events at the downtown. Allowing SF to maximize its usage. I just feel SF deserves to do something nice and not settle for what a few people think is all we deserve. I think this city has more potential for good but always settles for just enough. I would say 15K seat facility downtown with a parking ramp close by. Allow businesses who open up near the EC a tax break for its first few years to encourage more local businesses to profit from and provide the city with tax revenue. On the nights of events where people around here are to lazy to walk in winter from street parking or ramps downtown to have a shuttle set up with the bus line or something to bring people to and from stops downtown and to right at the EC. I know a lot of eldery would need closer parking but that could be built next to or on a ramp connected to the EC. I guess that would have been a start.

Well I have been to many events including those and it takes awhile for sure. I would rather walk to the car allow traffic to disperse on its on and not bottle neck up and allow people to walk past businesses and bars and resturants on the way home where they can spend more money.

That does sound like fun and downtown wouldn't be swamped by 10's of thousands of people. Then, in the fall and winter months I look forward to attending sporting events like the Summit League tourney as well as major concerts at the convention center site. If I have the kids with we'll stay at one of the entertainment center hotels. If its just the wife and I we'll stay downtown and enjoy the nightlife. Some others might choose to stay nearer the mall. Really looking forward to making trip to Sioux Falls instead of Sioux City for entertainment in the future.

Sioux Falls stadium does need to be upgraded and a downtown location is intriguing to me.
