It wasn't like they were broadcasting it, but I never once heard them say anything about playing in the new events center. maybe it was one of those things where they talked about it before or after the mayor was on.

Its just that, I'm not from Sioux Falls and I've heard about this thing for quite some time, and it was my understanding that the only way it would be built was if the Skyforce would play it it.

If you are referring to the Pentagon only being built if the Skyforce was playing in it, that is totally not true.

Thanks for clarifying, I hadn't heard anything firm regarding the Skyforce's intent. What are the financial consequences of losing that lease?

Agreed the pentagon was being built no matter what, the Skyforce is just the icing on the cake as the old folks say.

Wasn't it going to be something much smaller though if the Skyforce didn't come? Like a YMCA? IDK, I just remember hearing about it a long time ago.

If I was a betting man, I would wager that the Skyforce outdraw SDSU basketball games. Not an apples to apples comparison (tickets given away, bigger city, etc), but people do attend their games. They just don't follow like they would a college team.

The center court seating might have increased (from around 2,000 to 3,000) after the Skyforce agreed to be tenants. But this facility was being built with or without them.

I assure you this facility is not going to be anything like a YMCA.

The city administration is saying they never factored them into the new events center financial calculation, but wonder if the # of events shown to be in new events center did include the SkyForce. Either way it is a blow to the current arenas budget which is owned by the city. My understanding SkyForce asked for Sanford to expand the footprint from 2,000 to 3,000 for them to be a tenant. As someone else said the Pentagon was going to get built one way or another as it's one of the signature pieces to the Sanford Youth Sports Complex. Getting the Skyforce to play there speeded up the process and changed the mission slightly, but it will compete with the Events Center for certain events. I'm confident the city officials wanted this kept quiet until after the vote for obvious reasons.

Sioux Falls is going to go from having very poor athletic facilities to some of the best with Howard Wood being rebuilt as we speak, new events center, pentagon and eventually new youth hockey, indoor soccer and tennis facilities.

What the city did or did not know I am not aware of. I have known (it really wasn't a hush-hush secret) for awhile and every time the question was raised to the administration if the Skyforce was going to be playing in the new events center and/or arena, I listened very carefully to how they answered the questions (in my opinion they answered them very, very carefully).

Or perhaps Sioux Falls Planning should think about pushing the larger employers; Sanford, Citibank, WF, Avera to expand in West Sioux & Downtown rather than expanding their footprint in-place. Look at what is happing within blocks of Raven and Cherapa Pl.
