Don Dunham's unwillingness to build yet another one of his butt-ugly strip malls by the Events Center is, IMO, a point in favor of that location.

I believe the Skyforce made (and announced) this decision a few months ago. If they would get a championship caliber team,a 3000 person capacity doesn't seem like much. But,with a below-average team,1000 fans in a 12,000 seat arena doesn't make much sense either.

I'm pretty sure Sanford gave them a sweetheart deal to re-locate. And good for them. A sold-out 3000-seat arena is much better than 5000 seats filled in a 12,000-seat events center.

So you don't want people who can develop the area and add new jobs and business which would increase the potential tax profits for the city and offer new jobs. The ability to develop the area is very limited which is not good for the benefit of the city of Sioux Falls. Sure its great for Lloyd and Koch. It really is a big gamble that no one in the city has proven how any development will happen. Just some under the table type discussions. From the sounds of it we could expect to see maybe another bar open up close to it. Maybe a Hotel. Or they could just shuttle from the hotel thats going up downtown.

Don Dunham bought up a chunk of land between the Nites Inn and the old Sinclair at West, petitioned to have Lake Ave (I think) closed at 12th street, and put up two of his trademark butt-ugly strip malls which have, in three years, had four tenants in something like 12 total spaces.

His kind of development Sioux Falls can do without.

I think SF needs to target the West Sioux area for rehabilitation, including granting consideration for TIF districts, and gentrification of the business districts along Madison, Burnside, West and Western. I think they need to develop 'sense-of-place' features for both the Terrace Park neighborhood and West Sioux.

They *don't* need another context insensitive cheaply built ugly Dutch-gabled cadet blue half-occupied eyesore.

Hell build a wall*mart there and everyone will be vying for land nearby...

It was a badly kept secret. I think the "surprise" was that they will try to get out of the last year of their lease at the arena.

I think what Sanford wants to do is create a basketball only facility that can double as an athletic rehab/training facility with their name on it. Put the Skyforce as the #1 tenant and you make it creditable. I'm guessing that this facility has a few holiday high school basketball classics, and holds the Summer AAU/club tournaments.

I'm surprised that something like this hasn't been discussed for hockey, where the Stampede could play, and there could be 5-6 youth and rec ice rings all under one facility.

The good news about the Skyforce leaving for Sanford is that SF can get rid of that godawful, butt ugly teal basketball floor.
                  Holy nutmeg!

I love that floor. It could use a little refurbishing but it is unique.

I have to agree. That thing is ugly. I wish they could bring in a different one for the summit tourny.

This will continue to get ugly as the Mayor is exposed for not just for what he said, but we didn't say. Comment section has usual supects weighing in, but some great points.

Did most people who follow the Skyforce (very few you must admit) expect them to play in a 12,000 seat arena?

No one did. The mayor was on I think one of the radio shows in Sioux Falls or it may have been Stu's web video. Last spring and someone asked him about the Skyforce, and he said, It was his understanding that the Skyforce will continue to play in the old arena until the Sanford Health Pentagon thingy is built.

The people who know the Skyforce knew that they never planned on playing their. This is just one of those things where the anti events center people can complain.

I wouldn't be surprised though if a skyforce game or 2 a season was played at the new Events Center. Something like their Christmas Day game or if they got the D-League showcase or something like that.

The common understanding was they would stay in the old arena. Contrary to what the young man from Tyndall says the Mayor or his people never indicated this was going to the Pentagon as that would have been political suicide. The city people also talked at length at how the new events center could be curtained off and have a more intimate setting in the lower bowl.

TV mentioned in a blog or article sometime during the Skyforce off-season that they wanted to play in the Sanford facility if it became a reality.
