  • Weary Will statue

The new Weary Wil* statue was unveiled Friday before Hobo Day. For those who have not been on campus lately, Wil (he's about eight-and-a-half feet tall!) and his dog are taking it all in stride on the north side of the Student Union. He's immediately to the north of the portion of the new addition which houses the Bummobile.

    Story from recent Collegian: http://www.sdsucollegian.com/2011/11...nside-the-box/
Note the story refers to some hidden surprises provided by the sculptor.

It's a great rendition of a unique part of SDSU: Many claim SDSU is the only university with a mascot specific to its homecoming day. The look on Wil's face is priceless...the guy's an optimist as he strolls down the walk, his possessions all contained in the bag tied to the end of a stick.

    * Is the spelling Wil or Will? I see it both ways on university news items. Wil seems to be used most of the time. Maybe his name spelling is getting to be like Hobo Day or Days....

This is a nice addition to the campus. I thought the railroad tracks behind the statue was a nice touch also.

Prairiehaas is right about the railroad tracks...nice touch. Here's a picture from a slightly different angle, showing the tracks behind Wil (pics courtesy of Mrs. JackJD and her trusty phone).

For more, here's a link to the Loveland, CO "Reporter Herald" newspaper and a story about sculptor and Loveland resident, Dave Anderson, an SDSU grad, and his model, SDSU grad Dave Blegan, a former Grand Pooba for Hobo Day. The story was written by the Reporter Herald's Jim Willard, another SDSU grad!

I know Jim Willard. He is a 1957 graduate of Brookings High School. Apparently still doing some writing at age 72. Enjoyed this article and the story behind the statute of Weary Will. I recall during my student days, the bookstore gave book covers away free with Weary Will on the the covers. They were intended to keep new books in new condition. Thats something no longer offered I believe.
