Planning for University Athletic Facilities Proceeds

MADISON, S.D. – The South Dakota Board of Regents gave permission Wednesday for preliminary planning to proceed on three new athletic facilities at South Dakota State University and The University of South Dakota.

Approval of what the board refers to as “preliminary facility statements” means that the two universities can move forward to develop more detailed plans for an indoor practice and human performance facility and a new football stadium, both at SDSU, and a sports performance complex and renovations to the Dakota Dome at USD.

During this phase of planning, university officials will develop cost estimates, location drawings, and other details. Once those plans are complete, university officials must return to the Board of Regents and ultimately the state Legislature to seek final approval for the projects before any construction may begin.

Board officials said funding for these projects will not come from the state’s general fund or other operating revenues of the universities. “It is the board’s clear expectation that private donations and sponsorships will pay the full cost of constructing these facilities, if they are approved,” said Jack Warner, the regents’ executive director and CEO. “Additionally, we expect ongoing operating costs to be supported by athletic revenues, such as ticket sales and advertising.”

SDSU seeks to build a new football stadium, with seating for at least 20,000, to replace the 50-year-old Coughlin Alumni Stadium on the Brookings campus. The indoor practice and human performance facility would provide a 12-month indoor training facility for athletes in all sports, while expanding sports medicine and rehabilitation programs.

At USD, the proposed project seeks to address scheduling conflicts and overcrowding within the Dakota Dome complex. Renovations at the Dakota Dome would allow for a performance facility to serve multiple purposes, including competition, practice, and training, along with dedicated classrooms, sport science laboratories, and office space.

About time! Now let's hope the "Build it Downtown" folks don't raise a stink about wanting to move CAS to downtown Sioux Falls. *sarc*

just looking at the map drawn up in the master plan, with the performance center, it looks like the lots atleast in the drawning are paved where the tail gating is. Also it shows the intermural fields will be turned into a parking lot. What does any one in the now know about adding parking lots on campus and with the ever changing rules for tailgating what kind of change does this create for fans? I could imagine a paved lot sure would be nice compared to the mud it can turn into now.

Even though this is mostly unrelated, how do others feel about the allowing drinking in the all the tailgating lots? The plastic cups littered everywhere and such was a not a good look I thought last year. I could see it with the new stadium to allow drinking maybe behind the performance center and keep the rest around the stadium dry maybe. Not to sound like a prude, but just to keep it clean and the new stadium so it doesnt look like its surrounded by a trash pit.

One final thought, when do season tickets get sent out?

There shouldnt be such a thing as a "dry" spot at a college football game. More rules about keeping the tailgate area more tidy and maybe more trash cans , dumpsters so things can be cleaned up before people go to the game. OR ELSE.

Just an FYI, I use Audioboo for my soundbites, so you may not be able to access them right away on your computer, especially if you have an older version of IE... you might have to hit refresh once or twice.

Maybe I could tailgate with the old fuddy duddys away from the drunk college kids. your spot on about more trash cans, or encoragin people(college kids) to keep it some what respectable.

maybe the old man in me is coming out since I have been out of school. When I was in college I probably would have been one kids lovin the drinking before game, well since i was in the pride it only would make sense to get a little warmed up before we would warm up. Anyways. My point is just that the image from how tail gating went last year, it really looked trashy, show some respect for the school and use a garbage can for more then just puking in.

one would think it would be common sense to use a garbage can but i guess when alcohol takes over there is no such thing as common sense in some people.
