    Re: BOR-Athletic Facilities

I wonder how much this little eight-month delay will wind up costing SDSU and USD. Unfortunately we'll never really know . . .

I drove by yesterday and they haven't installed anything yet, but there was dirt all over so it looked like they were getting ready to do it soon.

Some comments from Justin Sell on the facility upgrade process towards the bottom of the story.

I don't drink but I see no problem with having alcohol in the tailgating area. At the same time, people having the tailgating spots should be held responsible for the area getting cleaned. I know it might not be the people who are paying for the spots making the mess, but if someone comes to your tailgating spot and is throwing crap on the ground, I would get pissed about it and say something to them (this really wasn't directed at your post mitchellrabbit but just towards the drinking in the tailgating part of the thread).

I agree Bub94. My spot is the "Still Heres." We gave ourselves the name because we felt like the University was trying to force the students into the HPER lot. Because we didn't want to be forced out anyone who came to our spot was asked to clean up after themselves. We really only had two drunk idiots who really pushed us on this and they were not from SDSU and not allowed back to our spot. All in all I think there needs to be a larger investment than the $5/game. I know that this is an anti-student statement, but there needs to be some ownership and accountability for the spot. The way the HPER lot looked last year after games was pretty poor. There were plenty of dumpsters for the students to use, but partying prevailed. I saw a picture of the lot after one of the games, I belive in the Collegian, and it was not a good representation of SDSU or the Athletic Department in my opinion. Wow... I'm starting to sound old and crabby!

You are not old and crabby, you are 100 % correct. We park in the HPER lot,and that student tailgating area was an absolute pit after games.

                Re: BOR-Athletic Facilities

TV has an interesting blog on the BOR approval. Here is link:

                http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs...8-09d5715714f9

The last point about the comparison to the EC in SF is interesting. Without the people's approval, the Mayor's approval means nothing. Thats been my point all along when reading page after page of entries about merits of Downtown Versus the Arena site. I think we are in a little different situation with private funds. I worry about another Staduim for State experience where students and alums voted no about funding the entire project and that is why fifty years later we have yellow high school bleachers on the east side of the field. I have increased my monthly ETF to SDSU Foundation btw.

I agree with all of this and ultimately any student tailgating section relies on the students to actually clean up their spot. The only idea I can come up with is to raise the per game lot fee to at least $10 or make it so that it's $40 for the season and you get the fifth game for free. If a student had to pay for the whole season, that would increase the accountability. One of the turnoffs of this would be that students would scoff at the price and would pass on the tailgating because I'm positive a price increase wouldn't go over well.

If I remember correctly, the first two home games had plenty of students tailgating, but there was probably only eight spaces paid for, at the most. For the Hobo Day game, I don't remember many students there but I could be wrong and of course, we all know about student turnout for the November games.

The original plan last year was to have them in a gravel lot NW of the stadium. That lot was delayed by wet weather last year and the students were then going to be near the PAC. There was some complaining about that plan, too because it was too far from the stadium and that's how students moved into that spot near the HPER.

SDSU should value their student tailgaters because they are unique and important to the "gameday experience." But that doesn't give them a free pass to trash the lot that is most visible to visitors and people walking to the stadium. In the end it might hurt some feelings but the users of the lot, regardless of age, should be accountable for their space.

I guess I have not yet seen the new "student" tailgating area so I don't know how trashy it looked).... my hope is they continue to try and find green space that can be used for this function. I'm not a big fan of tailgating in a paved parking lot!

                      Re: BOR-Athletic Facilities

That was my original problem was how bad it looked. Even though the main tailgating area left something to be desired, the HPER lot was a pit. I was embaressed watching fans from the other team have to walk past that. It was a bad represention of SDSU. If students don't respect them selves enough to keep from getting totally trashed while tailgating, have enough respect for the school and alumni to atleast use a garabage can.

A Letter to the Editor in the Argus today shows how hard the education process of the public might be. The writer starts out complaining about Mike Huether but then takes a shot at the Regents.

It's pretty clear some people like this person don't get public dollars are not involved and won't take the time to educate themselves. Bottom line is it doesn't matter if they ever get it as they won't be contributing to getting it built anyway. Complaining about Mike Huether I get.

No they don't get it, and that is what the opposition wants to have as an image in some minds, minds who take the time to vote and vote often. Thats where there is a problem with EC, but the new staduim at SDSU will move on no matter how many letters appear in the Argus.

Very convenient. It makes you wonder how many people out there see issues through these simple lens.
