Gotta disagree with you here. Our group had four teams at the Stan, all 30 to 35 years old.

Bottom line...get 2 teams together(10 dudes or gals), get the Athletic Dept to let both teams play together as a 10-some...eat 10 free Whoppers and drink 3 free $6 Stanley's(there fabulouso btw), wear your new $50 Nike Jackrabbit pullover, play a the BCC with cart $55, eat a $20 pork Loin buffett afterwards and have a GREAT TIME...we do every year...you can hear us from Volga!!!!

Not to mention the great time in downtown Brookings you'll have with your 10 buddies the night before...AFTER you've filled yourself up with all the FREE food you can stomach at the SM Auction.

I think if you'll add a few of those things I mentioned...$250 is a pretty good deal...but that's just me.

I agree that the "freebies" are great, but I also think that using smaller tournaments as "feeders" for the SM would generate even more interest in the entire weekend.

The Alumni Assoc already has a fairly large number of golf tournaments around the state that have many athletic department officials in attendance. Not sure how much difference more tournaments could make.

I agree that the "freebies" are great, but I also think that using smaller tournaments as "feeders" for the SM would generate even more interest in the entire weekend.

Oh it's slow, no doubt about it...10:30am to 5:30pm this year...and no doubt why some people stay away, but it's different than waiting for Mr.(I watch the Tour and this is how they do it, so I guess I should too) top the ball 10 feet in front of him and wonder why for 4 1/2 hours at your local public/muni goat-track. It's slow, but you're waiting for "your" group to play and not the group in front of you, which makes it way more tollerable.
You get to heckle and have a good time with 10 of your closest Buds for 6 hours, outside...on the golf course(a beautiful golf course at that)!!

Your group was slow because it was overserved and unable to take any swings without staring at the ball for 2 minutes before whiffing. We were done 2 holes ahead of you. You also forgot to mention the friendly wagers placed on the golfing that can defray the costs of the $250 weekend. Propar80 helped defray my costs thanks to a friendly $20 wager.

I wasn't thinking about having more tournamnets, but rather using the current smaller tournaments to increase interest in the Stan Marshall. I am certain that, like myself, a good majority of this board attend one or the other of the events on the weekend. My thought process was more to get the Jackrabbit fans that normally wouldn't attend.

I think that the Stan Marshall is a great way to get the fan base excited for SDSU athletics, but unfortunatly many of the participants already are season ticket holders or donate to the department. Perhaps using the alumi tournaments to prop up the Stan Marshall would bring in dollars and alumni that perhaps aren't that active in their alma mater.

Big time kudos to the Stan Marshall Committee when they switched the Stan Marshall from a one day grind to a weekend event. The Friday evening auction has brought the spouses and the non-golfers into the event much more. It also reduced the financial impact any weather had on the event.

You can get a much greater return on your investment on the auction than squeezing another few teams into the golf tournament.

However, if you can somehow get the alumni tournament winners to compete for a free slot in the following year's Stan Marshall, that might attract greater attention to those alumni tournaments, if that's your goal.

The Stein Open had it's inaugural tourney this past weekend in Miller, SD. The entry fee for the event was $1,000.00. The fee included a grill-out and golf. The vast majority of the money was used to fund SDSU athletics which is the exact opposite for how most of the alumni tourneys go that are held around the state.

Little known fact, but it is the rare alumni golf tourney around the state where SDSU doesn't LOSE money. The vast majority of the money goes to the country club/golf course where the even is held.

It was this realization that led to John Niederauer starting the Stein Open. It had a successful first year by all accounts and on all fronts. Next year they are going to schedule it for a weekend a little further removed from the Stan.

Early signs have the participants signed up for next year's event already surpassing this year's total. Gauntlet thrown? Rustler Pride

Very interesting. I don't dispute that most of the outings around the state do lose money and the golf course owners are the benefactors. This is a great way to raise money. Since I give at the office monthly through ETF, its not likely that I would show up but its a great opportunity for younger guys who are starting to make their mark financially in the world and are looking for a entaining way of writing a check.

The Yankton event had been more of a social gathering but now is a fundraiser. We are in the final stages of setting up an acorn endowment through the Yankton Jackrabbit club. The money to fund the endowment is raised primarily via the golf event. We expect to be able to provide at least $2,500/yr, more if we can.
