Re: Stan Marshall 2010
It sure would nice if SDSU athletics could update the website. The biggest fundraiser of the year is less than one month away.

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
If you go to GoJacks.com they have an early listing of the upcoming auction items for that Friday night.
/thinking of where I can put that SDSU Football Soda Fridge in my house.
/implements "I'll just bid on it and figure out where to put it later" plan
/also implements "will also figure out how to get it back to Milwaukee later" plan
/doesn't see how these plans can go wrong
For those of you who have young kids and don't have a Rainbow System in their back yard, head to the auction. You will still shell out some decent coin to get it, but it will be at a good discount (and your kids will think you're a hero). The one I picked up last year at the auction was purchased for approx 25% off the price I was quoted before I heard one was up for auction. My two older girls use it every day when weather permits. And all the money goes to SDSU Athletics. Win, win, win."You just stood their screaming. Fearing no one was listening to you. Hearing only what you wanna hear. Knowing only what you heard." Metallica

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
Obviously a lot of interest in this year's Stan Marshall from the board <sarcasm>.
Anyone attend or have any updates? I did talk with someone in the department last week who said there were about 30 golf teams registered, but some of the "usuals" weren't participating or fielding teams this year. Wasn't sure about how the auction looked though.
Is the economy to blame, or have many people grown tired of the SM and not enough new blood can be hooked on it?I updated my signature for the first time in six years.

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
$200 + is a lot of dough to shell out to golf. I would love to play in it but, I'm not spending that much to golf even though it's all for a good cause. It rained like crazy till about noon on Saturday and I understand they still started at 10:30. Not anything that can be done about the weather but it's not any fun playing golf in the rain. In the future, I'm going to try to attend the auction on Friday night.

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
Attended had a blast - even when it rained for the first 8 holes. It all depends on who you are golfing with. I do worry about the attendees at the event, though. My friends and I took up about 2 tables at the auction, but otherwise there were few people in my age bracket (mid-30's having been out of school 10-15 years) that were there. This is the group of people that needs to be at these events and keep coming back for years. Complaints, however valid they may be, about the $200 entry fee is part of why SDSU has problems.
$200 is a good chunk of money, granted. But, when you're spending it for the chance to have a weekend long golf/mini-reunion with your buddies, it's the best $200 spent. With the added pressures and responsibilities of middle-agedome and beyond you need to take opportunities to get together with old friends and remind yourselves that perhaps there is more to life than "wake up, kiss wife and kids goodbye, work, come home, kiss wife and kids goodnight, sleep, repeat". At least that's how I see things.
Despite getting very little sleep, driving 1000 miles round-trip and drinking too much in a 48 hour span, I returned home refreshed and reminded of why I have so much pride having been lucky enough to attend SDSU when the weekend is over. The friends I see at the Stan are the best things to come from my years at SDSU and I'm happy to spend $200 to hit the old stomping grounds with those friends. Get a 5-some together next year (even better with a group of 10) and give it a whirl. I promise you'll have fun."You just stood their screaming. Fearing no one was listening to you. Re: Stan Marshall 2010
I haven't done the golf, but have been to the auction. While the "big" items go for prices that I can not afford, the smaller items can often be gotten for a good deal. The 2nd best deal we ever got was buying a whole hog that worked out to a price per pound that would have made you think it was being sold in a back alley out of a truck with no means of refrigeration and a million flies buzzing around.
Best deal - seeing old friends.

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
In regards to CatchEmAll's question, the auction raised more than $70,000, which is in the ball park for other years. With 150 golfers, that adds another $15-20K to the total for the SM Scholarship Fund.
I'm lucky enough to live in Brookings, so don't have the expenses that out-of-town golfers have, but second MJA's comments. I have a player from Utah, and a player from Arkansas, neither of whom graduated from SDSU (two years attendance for one, one year for the other). And they don't look at it as a golfing-only event. They enjoy the Friday night get-together and auction, even though they don't buy anything. And we enjoy a great weekend together.
If you are going to look at it as $225 for golf, there is no doubt it is too pricey. You have to look at it as "I think I'll donate $125 (which is close to what the receipt lists for tax-deductible gift) to SDSU athletics, get a $50 Jacks shirt or jacket each time, and pay $50 for the golf." Only time will tell CEA, as to whether it is starting to wear out as a great Jackrabbit event.

If you look at it as the cost of golf, it is pricey, but unless you own a business you can not otherwise deduct the cost of going golfing and in business end,the golfing has to have business purpose. The Brookings Country Club is a nice place to golf, but I do not think it should cost 200 bucks for 18 holes, so you are doing this for other purposes.
I did not golf this year and have not for some time, but I find the deductions always come in handy on April 15th each year.

Re: Stan Marshall 2010
I have golfed in the SM in the past, but due to scheduling with work I was unable to attend this year. That being said, I have noticed that people my age (30-35) seem to be a little sparse. Do you think that the athletic department would consider having smaller tournaments all over the state with the a certain amount of teams getting a portion of their SM entry fee paid for? Or perhaps free lodging? Or some others incentive to come and play?
Perhaps those tournaments could happen at smaller courses all over the state to also help generate interest in the SM? Heck, I know lots of teams that would golf in both a smaller tournament and the SM as well...-South Dakotan by birth, a Jackrabbit by choice.

Gotta disagree with you here. Our group had four teams at the Stan, all 30 to 35 years old.
Bottom line...get 2 teams together(10 dudes or gals), get the Athletic Dept to let both teams play together as a 10-some...eat 10 free Whoppers and drink 3 free $6 Stanley's(there fabulouso btw), wear your new $50 Nike Jackrabbit pullover, play a the BCC with cart $55, eat a $20 pork Loin buffett afterwards and have a GREAT TIME...we do every year...you can hear us from Volga!!!!
Not to mention the great time in downtown Brookings you'll have with your 10 buddies the night before...AFTER you've filled yourself up with all the FREE food you can stomach at the SM Auction.
I think if you'll add a few of those things I mentioned...$250 is a pretty good deal...but that's just me.
Go Jacks!!SDSU...Passionate, Relentless, Champions.
