The SDSU hockey team (club sport) beat USD 7-2 at Yankton, Tuesday, 10/8/08. SDSU scored 4 in the first period and soundly beat the Coyote puckers (okay, I always wanted to write about a hockey game -- I know nothing about the sport ).
From the Volante, the USD student newspaper:
Head coach Kevin Mims said he was furious with how the team played against the Jackrabbits.
"We just weren't ready," Mims said. "We thought that State was a joke and took the game too lightly."
and, later in the article:
After SDSU made the lead 6-2, words were exchanged between players and sophomore forward Riley Hultman would start a fight and be ejected from the game. As the sides continued to banter back and forth, fellow sophomore Seth Miller would start another fight with a Jackrabbit, causing him to get ejected as well.
Assistant coach and goalie Anthony Hegstrom said Coyote players may be suspended for games at the SDSU tournament this weekend because of the ejections.
Now, keep mind: 1) this is a club sport; and 2) the coaches tend to be other students. So, take this Mims fellow's comments with a grain of salt. Additionally, the fighting incidents (the ejections are interesting because Yankton is USD's "home" ice) must be considered with the knowledge that, in my view, club hockey simply involves a lot of fighting, usually by both teams. Okay, enough nice-guy disclaimer stuff: Let's face it, the attitude demonstrated by the comment "We thought that State was a joke..." is best addressed exactly as the SDSU hockey team addressed it: a sound thrashing.
Congrats to the SDSU Hockey Team!!
