  • SDSU (Club) Hockey 7, USD 2

The SDSU hockey team (club sport) beat USD 7-2 at Yankton, Tuesday, 10/8/08. SDSU scored 4 in the first period and soundly beat the Coyote puckers (okay, I always wanted to write about a hockey game -- I know nothing about the sport ).

From the Volante, the USD student newspaper:

Head coach Kevin Mims said he was furious with how the team played against the Jackrabbits.

"We just weren't ready," Mims said. "We thought that State was a joke and took the game too lightly."

    and, later in the article:

After SDSU made the lead 6-2, words were exchanged between players and sophomore forward Riley Hultman would start a fight and be ejected from the game. As the sides continued to banter back and forth, fellow sophomore Seth Miller would start another fight with a Jackrabbit, causing him to get ejected as well.

Assistant coach and goalie Anthony Hegstrom said Coyote players may be suspended for games at the SDSU tournament this weekend because of the ejections.

Now, keep mind: 1) this is a club sport; and 2) the coaches tend to be other students. So, take this Mims fellow's comments with a grain of salt. Additionally, the fighting incidents (the ejections are interesting because Yankton is USD's "home" ice) must be considered with the knowledge that, in my view, club hockey simply involves a lot of fighting, usually by both teams. Okay, enough nice-guy disclaimer stuff: Let's face it, the attitude demonstrated by the comment "We thought that State was a joke..." is best addressed exactly as the SDSU hockey team addressed it: a sound thrashing.

Congrats to the SDSU Hockey Team!!

So we would not have lost if we would not have had so many penalties. We practically played the entire game a man down. We just need to play smarter hockey. Like today for instance when we played Dort, we only had a handful of penalties and we played some great hockey! We are an amazing team, SDSU caught us on a bad day, and when we play them on Saturday, they will get a taste of the yotes that they did not get to play on Tuesday. SDSU got lucky in my opinion.

Any SDSU hockey fans want to reply? Did they play again yesterday?

When I was in college the club hockey team had a home game against Northern State. The Wolves were very chippy taking a bunch of cheap shots....there were a bunch of fights culminating with bench clearing brawl. It got so bad the refs ended up calling the game in the second period I believe. Everyone on both the teams were fighting...ugly ugly ugly. It was at that point in time I lost all respect for club hockey. "Coached" by players for the most part......seems to me they just don't put out a very good image for the University.

Not an SDSU hockey fan, but I'll throw in my $0.02. Gloves oftentimes hit the ice after one team or the other gets frustrated to the point that getting really physical or winning a good fight is the only way they see themselves regaining momentum... or just using that as an excuse to take it out on someone from the other team.

Let me add my congrats to the team, too! Especially sweet since Mims didn't seem to take us seriously. I don't care the opponent, the sport or the level you're playing at -- you have to respect your opponent.

I used to go to the club games after basketball games during my second stint on campus in the early 90s. They were a lot of fun, but as a hockey fan, I always thought they were a bit undisciplined.

I don't know about the NSU incident, but I would say it is an exception, rather than a rule. Hockey is a fast, physical game and dust ups, pushing and shoving, and yes, fights, are gonna happen and have their place in the game. UTH is right: a team may start a fight to swing momentum, or if it's late in the game, to send a message for the next time the teams meet. And almost every fight is by agreement between the two players.

A lot of casual fans may be surprised to find there are unwritten "rules" for fighting in hockey -- The Code. Minnesota author Ross Bernstein wrote an excellent book called The Code: The Unwritten Rules Of Fighting And Retaliation In The NHL. Great read for anybody interested in the sport.

In fact, he's also written a similar book for baseball: The Code: Baseball's Unwritten Rules and its Igonore at your own risk Code of Conduct

I remember that game, we got our money back because the came got called. They had to chip the blood off the ice after they cleared both teams out. When they made the game up the next day it was nothing like the first, very quiet from both teams. its odd that hockey is the only sport where players can fist fight and stop play of the game and only get ejected and out for the next game. suspending players for the whole year might make them think once or twice about fighting like that. So that makes me think, does Nothern still have a club hockey team?
