  • Editorial: Putting weekly shows behind a subscription wall

Does anybody in the HPER building realize how incredibly stupid it is to put coaches' shows behind the Jackrabbit Extra subscription wall? I see that they're coming out with a "Around the Bases" audio show for baseball and softball seasons. (Announcement link here.) That's great. You have to pay the Jackrabbit Extra $4.95/month fee to listen to them. That's stupid.

I had the same thought, actually, about the Stigelmeyer, Nagy, and Johnston video coaches shows. They were well done, but I'm sure almost nobody saw them, because except for a brief excerpt, they were hidden behind the subscription wall.

These are promotional materials, folks. You're making your money by putting butts in the seats for athletic events. Everything that you do needs to revolve around building interest generally, and building attendance specifically. EVERYTHING YOU DO. Job #1 is creating, enhancing, and sustaining a positive buzz about SDSU Athletics. These shows can help you do that. But if you hide them behind a subscription wall, you limit the audience to these shows to only the hardest core of the fanatics--the ones that have ALREADY paid for their season tickets, most likely.

Get a clue, Athletic Department! Make the coaches' shows easily and freely available for viewing.

    That's what I think.

Rep points on that post...I actually cancelled my Jackrabbit Extra just cause I don't use it enough. Just can't understand why everything has to be behind a subscription.

Yup. Can't argue with any of that. In fact, I've said the same thing about 100 times. The media world has changed: It's not about scarcity and exclusivity, it's about ubiquity. You need to make promotional content widely available to DRIVE people to your site and to your pay services. "If you build it, they will come" only works in supernatural baseball stories that become Kevin Costner movies. Note that in about nine months we've had more than 42,000 views of the content we've put on YouTube.

Too many content providers (and athletics is one) treat their Web sites like walled gardens and then wonder why nobody ever comes over to play.
            Holy nutmeg!

I shall cast my vote on this topic. My vote will be counted as a Jackrabbit Club donor who did not subscribe during the off-season.

A Bison fan's opinion: You guys are completely right. For some reason, we didn't have a basketball show this year, and the football show was moved to a bad time(10:30am Sundays). Having the show available online free of charge kept it from becoming completely irrelevant. Hope your athletic administration wakes up on this topic.

Re: Editorial: Putting weekly shows behind a subscription wall

I am going to weigh in with these comments. I have tighten my budget and have subscribed to zero events, and I dont think the coaches will say enough or have comments different from news articles to stir my interests. I think the HPER had hoped to realize revenue off these types of services, but maybe they have went to far in this direction. I think its HPER turn to comment.

I am sure SDSU wants the Jackrabbit Club to continue experiencing its growth, so they might be wise to re examine this service as a source of revenue. They may be a little too aggressive.

Another thing I have noticed is that preferred seating season tickets are being moved up earlier each year. Can you believe the football season ticket cut off is May 31? I guess the thing that bothers me is that they have use of the money for months before the first game starts.

So it is with being a D1 member.

What about possibly leaving the coaches shows on there for free, and having all the game broudcasts for charge? Then you're advertising the game broadcasts while catching up on all the latest news in SDSU athletics. It's hopefully a win-win (for SDSU) if you watch it and then end up buying a package deal.

JJ - I think I remember you posting a while back that they were gonna try to get the coaches shows on locally (SDSU channel in Brookings, and also something in Sioux Falls). Did that get tied up somewhere along the lines or is it still in the works?
