Jackrabbits win two more
OREM, Utah -- South Dakota State upped its volleyball winning streak to 10 matches with a pair of victories Thursday at the LaQuinta Independent Championships.
The Jackrabbits, who improved to 19-11 overall, swept host Utah Valley State 33-31, 30-21, 30-28 in the opener, then came back later in the day with a 30-16, 30-18, 30-19 sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In the opener, four Jackrabbit players reached double figures for kills. Kim Bostrom led the SDSU attack with 15 kills and a .461 hitting percentage (15 kills, 3 errors in 26 attempts), followed by 12 kills and a .611 hitting percentage (12-1-18) from fellow middle hitter Carley Boll. Kristina Martin and Sarah Biggerstaff added 11 and 10 kills, respectively as the Jackrabbits tallied a .314 team hitting percentage.
SDSU setter Kristie Klusaw was credited with 44 set assists.
Defensively, Sarah Simet posted 18 digs and Minette Ridenour contributed 13 digs. The Jackrabbits held a 10-4 blocking advantage, led by Bostrom's six block assists.
The Jackrabbits held off three Utah Valley State game points in Game 1 and kept the Wolverines at bay the rest of the way. UVSC was led by Alina Wallauer's 16 kills.
SDSU continued its hot hitting in its second match of the day, posting a .464 team hitting percentage in the sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Bostrom and Boll again proved too much as the middle hitting tandem turned in identical lines of 11 kills and .563 hitting percentages (11-2-16). Ridenour added 10 kills and a .556 hitting percentage (10-0-18), completing a double-double with a team-high 14 digs. Simet added 12 digs.
Klusaw notched 27 set assists and Stephanie Behm chipped in with 17 in a reserve role.
SDSU resumes play at 11 a.m. Central Time (10 a.m. Mountain) Friday against fellow tournament unbeaten Northern Colorado. The Jackrabbits will square off against Texas-Pan American at 6 p.m. CT (5 p.m. MT).
