Couple of nice wins at Independent Championships.

Jackrabbits win two more
OREM, Utah -- South Dakota State upped its volleyball winning streak to 10 matches with a pair of victories Thursday at the LaQuinta Independent Championships.

The Jackrabbits, who improved to 19-11 overall, swept host Utah Valley State 33-31, 30-21, 30-28 in the opener, then came back later in the day with a 30-16, 30-18, 30-19 sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

In the opener, four Jackrabbit players reached double figures for kills. Kim Bostrom led the SDSU attack with 15 kills and a .461 hitting percentage (15 kills, 3 errors in 26 attempts), followed by 12 kills and a .611 hitting percentage (12-1-18) from fellow middle hitter Carley Boll. Kristina Martin and Sarah Biggerstaff added 11 and 10 kills, respectively as the Jackrabbits tallied a .314 team hitting percentage.

SDSU setter Kristie Klusaw was credited with 44 set assists.

Defensively, Sarah Simet posted 18 digs and Minette Ridenour contributed 13 digs. The Jackrabbits held a 10-4 blocking advantage, led by Bostrom's six block assists.

The Jackrabbits held off three Utah Valley State game points in Game 1 and kept the Wolverines at bay the rest of the way. UVSC was led by Alina Wallauer's 16 kills.

SDSU continued its hot hitting in its second match of the day, posting a .464 team hitting percentage in the sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Bostrom and Boll again proved too much as the middle hitting tandem turned in identical lines of 11 kills and .563 hitting percentages (11-2-16). Ridenour added 10 kills and a .556 hitting percentage (10-0-18), completing a double-double with a team-high 14 digs. Simet added 12 digs.

Klusaw notched 27 set assists and Stephanie Behm chipped in with 17 in a reserve role.

SDSU resumes play at 11 a.m. Central Time (10 a.m. Mountain) Friday against fellow tournament unbeaten Northern Colorado. The Jackrabbits will square off against Texas-Pan American at 6 p.m. CT (5 p.m. MT).

The Jacks just beat UNC in volleyball 3-2 at the LaQuinta Independent Championships in Orem, UT. They are now 3-0 in the round robin tournament. Jacks win again!  ;D  They remain undefeated at the LaQuinta Independent Championships with a sweep of the University of Texas - Pan American. The Jacks are now 4-0 with 2 games left to play. Way to go Jackrabbits! ;D

Lady Broncs Fall to TAMUCC and SDSU

The University of Texas-Pan American dropped two matches at the LaQuinta Independent Championships to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and South Dakota State on Friday (Nov. 12) to extend its winless streak to five matches.  .  .  .

The second match of the evening for UTPA proved to be even more frustrating for the squad as UTPA collected 40 kills in 129 total attempts, but were hurt with 20 hitting errors. In the first game, South Dakota State and UTPA fought to the very end with the Jackrabbits coming out on top with 30-28 victory. They cruised easily in the next two frames, winning 30-18 and 30-19.  .  .  .

Thinks this isn't important, think again.  This means one hell of a lot with regards to respect and future schedules at the DI level.  Those short-sighted idiots who expect failure never even considered the "non-premiere" sports.  Thank God for those with vision where would we be without them?   *

SDSU ends independent tournament 5-1

OREM, Utah -- The South Dakota State University volleyball team wrapped up play at the LaQuinta Independent Championships with a second-place finish and some record-setting performances Saturday.

The Jackrabbits had their 12-match winning steak snapped by IPFW in the first match of the day, then rebounded to win their final match over North Dakota State. IPFW, SDSU and Northern Colorado all ended the tournament with 5-1 records, with IPFW winning the tie-breaker to claim the team title. The Jackrabbits were second by losing the second-fewest games and UNC took third.

In the opener, tournament MVP Fabiana Souza posted 22 kills and 12 digs to lead the Mastodons of IPFW to a three-game sweep of the Jackrabbits. Game scores were 30-20, 31-29 and 30-26.

The Jackrabbits were led offensively by Kim Bostrom, who pounded 13 kills to go along with a .346 hitting percentage (13 kills, 4 errors in 26 attempts). Kristina Martin added 11 kills.

Kristie Klusaw tallied 23 set assists and Sarah Simet contributed 19 digs in a losing effort.

SDSU came back in the finale to down North Dakota State for the third time this season. The Jackrabbits won by scores of 30-28, 30-28, 26-30 and 30-16 to end their season with a 22-12 record. SDSU won 13 of its final 14 matches.

Minette Ridenour paced the Jackrabbit offense with 19 kills and added 19 digs. Senior Sarah Biggerstaff contributed 16 kills and added five block assists to end her career atop the Jackrabbit career block assists chart with 346, one more than teammate Kim Bostrom.

Martin added 10 kills and Bostrom tallied eight kills as she ended her senior campaign with a .381 hitting percentage on the season to surpass the previous record of .378 set by Paula Burma in 1983.

Sarah Simet also wrote her name into the SDSU record books as her 24 digs in the match upped her season total to 605, 10 more than the previous mark set by Liz Archer in 2002.

Kristie Klusaw turned in a double-double performance with 52 assists and 15 digs.

Sheri Swanson and Sheila Parrish each had 12 kills to lead North Dakota State.

SDSU was represented on the all-tournament team by Ridenour, Martin and Simet.

Fantastic season for the volleyball team. They as well as the football team have shown that they can compete at the D-I level. Give them a couple more scholarships and more fan support (way to go Depot Radio with the radio coverage!!!) and the future looks very bright.

I had a chance to listen to a couple of the volleyball games form the Independant Championships. The Jacks did great-what a first season in D1. It appers to me that womens volleyball is gaining quite a lot of popularity, and next to WBB probably the next revenue sport for the future.
