    Bears baseball to host tourney

    Samuel G. Mustari, (Bio) mustari@greeleytrib.com
    May 20, 2005

GREELEY -- The University of Northern Colorado baseball team isn't eligible for Division I postseason play because of NCAA rules for teams in transition and because the Bears

    aren't affiliated with a conference.

So the Bears have created the next best thing the last two seasons -- their own Division I Independent Invitational.

UNC will attempt to make the best of the situation when it plays host to South Dakota State in a 2:30 p.m. game today at Jackson Field.

"Everybody is having their conference tournaments, and it's important of us to get together as independent teams and participate," University of Northern Colorado coach Kevin Smallcomb said. "Hopefully, this will evolve and develop, not just for UNC, but for independent baseball. The other coaches are also committed to it."  .  .  .

NYIT comes into the tournament as the defending champion after defeating UNC, Pace University (N.Y.) and Hawaii-Hilo last season.  .  .  .

Re: NCAA D-I Independent Baseball Tourney

Good game to watch, the Bears and Jacks seem to be pretty evenly matched. I think the two universities have a lot a respect for each and its seems like the play on the field proves that. Not in just baseball, but in all sports. I hope these contests will continue for a long time.

It was nice to hear the positive comments from Jay Hinrichs (new A.D. at Northern Colorado) about Reggie Christiansen and the rest of SDSU's coaching staff. They were all at Kansas together.

                [move][glb]GO JACKS![/glb][/move]

Going to the bottom of the 7th, after a bad outing at Kansas State, Josh Elliott has been great today. He has given up only 4 hits. He has walked 3 and has 3 Ks.

Jacks Beat New York Tech At Indee Tourney

GREELEY, CO - Chris Iverson doubled home the winning run in the top of the tenth inning as South Dakota State defeated New York Tech 4-3 in the second round of the Division I Independent Invitational baseball tournament Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.

New York Tech, 24-21, had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.

SDSU senior Josh Elliott pitched the first nine innings to earn the victory. He had a shutout through six innings. Elliott scattered eight hits and two of the three NYIT runs were unearned. Elliott is now 4-5 for the season.

Tigh Surdez pitched the tenth to earn his second save. NYIT’s leadoff batter, David Johnson, reached base on a single but after getting an infield pop-up for the first out, Surdez got pinch hitter Tom Leonick to hit into a short to first double play to end the game.

Nick Adams and Greg Geary had two hits each to lead SDSU’s eight hit attack.

The Jacks threatened to get a big jump out of the gate, loading the bases with no one out in the first inning. Tim Hanigan, who had led off with a single, scored on a sacrifce fly by Geary to make it 1-0, but NYIT starter Joe Esposito followed that with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

SDSU added single runs in the fourth and fifth.

In the fourth, Iverson walked, Korby Mintken beat out a bunt attempt with Iverson going all the way to third on the throw to first before Iverson scored on an infield groundout by Hanigan.

In the fifth, Adams led off with a double and Geary followed with an RBI single.

SDSU, now 16-37, will close its season Sunday, playing Utah Valley State in the 11 a.m. (Mountain time) game.
