Bears baseball to host tourney

GREELEY -- The University of Northern Colorado baseball team isn't eligible for Division I postseason play because of NCAA rules for teams in transition and because the Bears
aren't affiliated with a conference.
So the Bears have created the next best thing the last two seasons -- their own Division I Independent Invitational.
UNC will attempt to make the best of the situation when it plays host to South Dakota State in a 2:30 p.m. game today at Jackson Field.
"Everybody is having their conference tournaments, and it's important of us to get together as independent teams and participate," University of Northern Colorado coach Kevin Smallcomb said. "Hopefully, this will evolve and develop, not just for UNC, but for independent baseball. The other coaches are also committed to it." . . .
NYIT comes into the tournament as the defending champion after defeating UNC, Pace University (N.Y.) and Hawaii-Hilo last season. . . .
