Although very young the Jackrabbit put a beating on D-II Minnesota State 4-1.  A freshmen who is from a KC suburb just down the road from mine led the way.

Jacks defeat Mavericks in home opener

BROOKINGS — Chelsea Goosen scored two goals and Kelsey Worcester added an insurance goal late in the contest to give the South Dakota State University women’s soccer team a 4-1 victory over Minnesota State, Mankato Friday night.

Goosen, a freshman from Olathe, Kan., put the Jackrabbits on the board in the 22nd minute with her first career goal. MSMU’s Carly Peterson tied the ballgame at one, three minutes later off an assist from Jacy Brannen. Kellyn Farrell, a freshman from Littleton, Colo., closed out the first half with her first career goal in the 34th minute.

SDSU upped the lead to 3-1 in the beginning of the second half as Goosen connected for her second goal of the contest. Sophomore Kelsey Worcester closed out the scoring for the Jackrabbits scoring off an assist from Janel Brown.  .  .  .

The Jackrabbits will take on Creighton University in a 1 p.m. match at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday. The contest will mark the first Division I soccer match to be played at Fishback Soccer Park.

Sunday’s game against the Bluejays will also be Sioux Falls Soccer Day. Members of the Dakota Gold and Great Plains soccer clubs will be able to watch the first-ever Division I soccer game played at Fishback Soccer Park free if they are sporting their team jersey upon entering the 1 p.m. contest.



It is good for a young ball club to get that first win under their belts.

P.S.  This game was the first-ever night game played at Fishback and drew a crowd of 267.

congrats to the lady jacks on their victory, we too opened with a W in soccer beating Troy St last night in a torney down there. Hope they get back b-4 Katrina hits them.

I was at the game last night and this years team is noticably better than previous years. The Jacks started 7 freshman and brought in two more off the bench. Sunday versus Creighton should be a good test for the future of Jackrabbit soccer.

Vaught Records Six Points in Women’s Soccer’s 5-1 Win Over South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Freshman Lindsay Vaught had two goals and two assists to lead Creighton’s women’s soccer team to a 5-1 victory over South Dakota State  Sunday afternoon in Brookings, S.D. Vaught’s six point output is the highest single-game total since Lulu Quigley’s six point game against Belmont in 2001.

Junior Katie Brennan put the Jays (1-1) on the board in the 11th minute when she scored on a Sam Russell pass to put CU up 1-0.

Sophomore Kristine Willrett scored Creighton’s second goal from five yards out in the 38th minute off a feed from Vaught.

The Jackrabbits (1-1) got their only goal of the match with 1:53 remaining in the first half when Chelsea Goosen’s shot found its way past Creighton goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer, who also recorded five saves on the afternoon for the Bluejays.

Vaught began her five-point second half in the 74th minute when she emerged from a scramble after a throw-in with the ball and scored an unassisted goal.

The Olathe, Kan., native scored her second goal seven minutes later off an assist from Willrett, who was returning the favor from the first half.

Three Bluejay freshman hooked up for the game’s final goal in the 84th minute when Vaught and Marcy Gans assisted Nicole DeLue’s first career goal.

Creighton outshot SDSU 26-13, including a 10-6 advantage on goal. The team’s five goals are the most since scoring eight on Youngstown State on Sept. 17, 2004.

The Bluejays are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Western Illinois for a 3 p.m. contest. The Jays defeated WIU 4-0 last season in Omaha.

BROOKINGS - It's not often that a team can start the season with three losses in its first four games and be pleased.

Then again, for a South Dakota State young squad, showing they can play with Division I competition could mean just as much as going unbeaten.

The Jackrabbits kicked their season off over the weekend at the University of Oregon's Kickoff Classic, sweeping Gonzaga and losing a five-set match to defending Big Sky champion Eastern Washington.

The games were sandwiched around a pair of three-set losses - to Portland State and host Oregon - that show there is a lot to learn.

"I thought our team started out slow," Coach Andrew Palileo said. "You expect that, just because we're a young team. The blank stares you sometimes get from freshmen happened."

SDSU heads to the Cyclone Classic this weekend in Ames, Iowa, with games against host Iowa State and Stephen F. Austin kicking off the two-day event Friday.

Freshman outside hitter Danielle Norby left the team on Monday. Still, the remaining 16-player roster contains just one senior and four juniors after going 22-12 overall and 13-6 against Division I teams last year.

The Jacks' quick-moving offense from the outside hitter spots that are occupied by two 6-footers - sophomore Kristina Martin and junior Minette Ridenour.

Martin, a native of Hubertis, Wis., was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year last year despite playing out of position on the left side. The left-handed hitter had 351 kills last season, third-best on the team, and had 46 at the Oregon tournament while returning to the right side.

"Sometimes we forget she's only a sophomore," Palileo said. "But as good a player as she is, she still still makes mistakes."

Ridenour led the Jacks with 422 kills a year ago en route to All-Independent Second-Team honors. She also had 412 digs.

"Anytime you can get that combination, you've had a good year," Palileo said. "We're expecting 500 and 500 out of her this year."

They will be joined by one of two freshmen in the starting rotation: either 6-foot Mackenzie Angner or 6-1 Laura Slagter.

A season-ending knee injury to Carley Bohl in the offseason and the graduation of Sarah Biggerstaff put Palileo in a bind at middle hitter without a returning starter.

Palileo decided to start 6-1 freshman Kathleen Hruska there instead of redshirting her. Hruska, the state's Gatorade Player of the Year last fall at Roosevelt high, is paired with 6-foot redshirt freshman Emily Rooney. The young duo combined for 58 kills at the Oregon tourney.

Setting the hitters again will be Kristie Klusaw, a 5-10 junior who already sits in seventh place all-time on SDSU's career assist list with 1,494. Her backup, junior Stephanie Behm, is sixth.

Libero - or the defensive specialist position - is one spot that Palileo says is up in the air after 5-7 senior Sara Doschadis got the start in Oregon. But 5-6 sophomore Samantha Pearson led the team in digs with 56, including a single-match career high of 23, and appears to have taken the job.

After the Iowa State event, the Jacks are on the road for nearly another month, including tournaments at North Dakota State and Wake Forest and a match at Kansas State. The home season opens on Sept. 27 against Drake.

SDSU, playing an independent while without a conference, will be eligible for NCAA Tournament play next year.

"There's a lot of tradition - we'll be competing against three top 30 teams (this year)," Palileo said. "We're trying to get into the top 80, top 70 this year preparing us for the 2006 season."

SDSU's men's basketball opener on Nov. 13 at Kentucky will be broadcast on ESPNU, the network's new college sports channel on digital cable. ... The football team is rated 157th in the Sagarin Rankings for Division I-A and I-AA teams, ahead of three I-A schools. The Great West Conference is rated 15th out of 28 leagues and the third-toughest in I-AA. ... Jackrabbit football players and coaches will conduct a free youth football clinic prior to the season opener on Saturday before the opener with Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The clinic will run from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the football practice field adjacent to Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to attend, but must pre-register by calling 1-866-GO JACKS.

I see the soccer uniforms are made by Nike. Do they have a contract to make all the uniforms? I''m just curious as to the uniform situation.
